It is a belt that drives a generator.

It is the route the belt follows around all the pulleys on the engine that belt is driving.

On the passenger's side of the engine down low there is a tensioner. It is a pulley mounted to a spring loaded arm. On the arm of that tensioner, there is a square hole to insert a small breaker bar or a ratchet. Insert the tool and use it to lever the tensioner and release the tension.

All Fords have a belt diagram sticker under the hood, usually on the front support.

get a tensionier bar from the auto store. Place it the hole or around the nut moves the tensioner, either up or down.

Have you checked the Belt tension? LOOSE belt at startup will cause lower crank pulley to free spin before belt can grab and turn. This will cause excessive heat thus screeching sound. Power steering pump works hard to pump fluid when turning, if belt is not tight the opposite of startup occurs. As it pumps fluid pressure builds rapidly making the pulley harder to spin (LOOSE BELT will get hot trying to turn pulley). TENSIONER MAY BE GOING OUT. This happend to a friend, replaced no more noise. Or you can try adjusting tension on later model cars its the power steering pump bracket. Good luck!

NO ANSWER, I HAVE A REPLACED MY DOUBLE RIBBED BELT 3 TIMES IN THE PAST 5 MONTHS, THIS IS AFTER REPLACING ALL PULLEYS

This link has many helpful diagrams. There should also be one under your hood by the belt labeled Accessory Drive Belt Routing. So if you find the diagram on your car you can match it to the diagram in this link and it will even tell you what to loosen to get the belt off.

Just put a socket on the tensioning pulley and it will lossen the drive belt nope....wrong answer, socket and rachet wont have clearance. this is a lincoln, not a chevy...

a standard wrench (either 15 mm or 5/8 in. ), using the box-end of the wrench, place it on the tensioner pulley mount bolt (you will need a very long wrench to move the AC line up against the fender while you fit the wrench onto the pulley, you want the wrench placed in a 12:30-1:00 o'clock position), with wrench in place as mentioned, you will take the very long wrench used to move the AC line, and place the boxed-end of the long wrench onto the open-end of the wrench on the pulley. if you dont understand how this works, ask a handyman/mechanic to show you how to use the long wrench as leverage. idea is you dont have room for any other manner except to go buy a tool for this that costs 80.00 usd.

second thing to consider is this: on the plastic plate covering the radiator and fan should be a CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS sticker, if not, then you have a federal vehicle, I.E., out of state. the two models of this year use different belts. hint:federal has ONLY ONE serpentine belt, other has smaller serpentine plus one v-belt.

You should be able to get one of these from an auto parts store like Autozone, Advance Auto Parts, and Pep Boys.

If you mean the serpentine belt that runs the pulleys on the front of the car, there is a tensioner pulley that you can turn with a wrench to release the tension. Make sure you remember the routing of the belt so you can put the new belt on the same way.
