Shocks and Struts

The 7th generation Chevrolet Impala with the LA1 engine puts down 210 ft/lbs (280 N.m) of torque. That is as far as I know.

If the struts are gone, the vehicle will bottom out easily and will tend to continue to bounce after giving a corner of the vehicle a hard shove downward. The vehicle will tend to roll more in corners as a result and will not handle as well as it should.

If you treat your car well at 180K miles or never depending on country of production and year.

Remove two lower strut bolts holding bottom of strut to the spindle. Remove the bolt holding the brake flex hose to the strut

Some model years have the outer tie rod attached to the housing, separate the tie rod from the strut if you have to (can't remember on a 1992)

Remove the 3 top nuts in the engine compartment ond the whole assembly will come out

Put the strut in a spring compressor and compress the spring

Undo the top center nut in the center of the upper mount/bearing plate

The strut will fall out of the spring.

Extend the piston fulley on the new strut and slide it back into the mount/ spring assembly

Tighten the top nut in the center of the upper mount (new one comes with new strut)

Make sure the spring is in the correct position when you put it back together and reverse the instructions to install.

You will need an alignment!!

Check the upper mount bearing before reusing

front struts go behind the wheels and in the front and rear shocks go in the back

A shock absorber is a mechanical device designed to smooth out or damp shock impulse, and dissipate kinetic energy. It is a type of dashpot.Other names for a shock absorber include damper and dashpot.

These struts are to be replaced with vehicle sitting on the ground with tires on. If you raise the vehicle and disconnect the strut hardware, the large spring can fly out and jam in between the tire and body and possibly cause injury. If you want to do it yourself, remove 2 covers that resemble little hats underneath hood. You will see a strut shaft nut and jounce bumper assembly, depending on what your model has. Recommend to purchase Haynes GM Repair Manual for this repair as it has good pictures. Manual is approx. $15.00 and this is a more complicated replacement than just regular shocks on older models. You probably will have to rent a strut cartridge nut socket, don't buy one, as I believe they're very expensive ($65.00 or so), unless you plan on doing this for a living. The manufacturers (Gabriel or Monroe) recommend changing struts or shocks every 30,000 miles, and this is a worthwhile repair as it can be a great tire saver. Hope this helps.

Struts costs for a 2004 Chevy Impala depend on where they are being bought from. At local auto part store they can cost over $100 while online they can be bought for less than $75 a piece.

That is a job best left to a repair shop with the proper equipment. The spring must be compressed and that can be very dangerous.

If you're using quickstruts, all you need to do is remove the nuts on the top (accessed by removing the rear seat or through the trunk) and the two bolts at the bottom of the strut that pass through the knuckle.

If you're not using quickstruts, there's more involved as you need to take some of the parts off the old struts to use on the new struts.

In neither case do you need a spring compressor as these are technically Chapman struts, and the spring is mounted separately.

The nuts at the top remove relatively easily. The bolts on the bottom will take quite a bit of work to remove from the knuckle if you're using a hammer. I recommend an airhammer.

Do not allow the knuckle to fall downward and stress the ball joint once the strut bolts have been removed. Do get the car aligned before driving it any distance.

I had a problem with my car and there were so many elecrtical relays for the front air ride. it is a lot cheaper to replace the air ride with the strut and psring conversion kit from ARNOTT Inc for only $529.00.. took me about 6 hours to do all four wheels. each air bag cost about 300, air compressor about 175, silonoid about 75,compressor relay 100, height sensors 150 ea, and this is only some of the parts..labor 1000.....hope this is helpfull

Its actually a pretty fast process. Mitsubishi Galants are equipped with Mcpherson struts (which basically is the strut, shocks and coil spring all in one unit). I give a general idea of what you'll need to do. I'd buy a repair manual ($15) to know the step by step. 1)lift car and remove the tires (make sure parking break is off if your doing the rear struts) 2)remove break calipers and/or drums 3)disconnet control arm and tight rods 4)to remove the struts in the front lift up the hood and locate the attaching bolts that are on the frame on each side for the rear you'll have to remove the rear seat and rear windo panel 5)to remove the coil springs you'll need a coil spring compressor. Normally you can loan this from the auto part store, but for $30 might as well but your own. 6)instalation is the reverse. Make sure you get aligment done afterwards just in case.

these are generic strut directions, they might not be exact for a honda you need to get a Ball Joint Separator, on some cars you also need a Spring Compressor. loosen lug nuts,jack up car and place on jack stands. remove front wheels (Assuming front struts) place jack under lower control arm (to hold against spring pressure) compress spring remove cotter pin on ball joint remove nut on ball joint lower jack use ball joint separator to get strut loose from control arm unbolt strut from spindle assembly unbolt top of strut and remove

It doesn't have struts. It has coil-over shocks.

The air shocks in a 91 chrysler are actually just air bags in a sence, they are a red cylindrical rubber peice that is fit inbetween the actuall springs in the shocks. Removing your tire and take a look, if there is a red thing inbetween your spring coils you have air ride shocks. They are not like the newer models as they don't self adjust they are actually always full of air.

NONE at all.... Two bolts up top, One bolt/nut on the bottom. Pull shock, remove top seat. Install top seat on new shock, and install shock on car.... (that is of course, after you remove the rear wheel [if you want]. On a stock suspension, this can be done, using a floor jack, without removing the wheel.)

To replace radius arm bushings on a Mercedes A class, remove the 1 1/8 nut at the end of the radius arm. Cut the rivets out and remove the 4 bolts holding the hanger on. Remove the hanger and replace the bushings and bolt it back together.

You most certainly can, we got shocked all the time, when you rub wool socks and touch a door knob you get shocked, and of course you survive. What you might be referring to is electrocution, say struck by lightning and have died, in some cases you can survive it all depends on what you're using and what you were shocked by, lightning actually isn't as fatal, more people survive from getting shocked by lightning then by getting shocked by electrical wires or a common house hold item, in might seem a little far-fetched, but it is indeed true.

Struts took the place of shock absorbers.There is one on each wheel and connects to the lower suspension.

compared to rebuilding an automatic tranny, i'd say no... get the book, and read up on it, and enjoy, :) also, Everyone should have a manual for their vehicle, and the library should have a professional shop manual available in the reference section(make copies of the right sections) read up and fix it like a PRO! :) good luck
