On a DODGE 360 cubic inch V8 engine :

The rear metal timing belt cover has a notch behind each of the camshafts. Use these notches to put the mark on the camshaft gear starting from passenger side with the #1 on the camshaft gear, then 2,3, & 4 in order. On the crankshaft you must remove the 6 bolt holding the pulley and remove pulley so that you may access the mark on the bottom gear. One you locate that mark that one should be aligned at 6 o'clock position with a recess on the front right underneath that gear. At this point cylinder #1 is at top dead center. If you had removed the timing Gears, Install the gear so the alignment pin on the cam is in the correct, numbered alignment slot on the cam gear, to prevent a 180 degree out cam timing.

You need to know the firing order of the engine. Answer 2 The same as the firing order - 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2. #1 is toward the front of the distributor and slightly to the left (passenger's side). All small block and big block Chevys have the same firing order except for certain marine engines and 1 or 2 oddballs. (BTW - distributor rotation is clockwise)

Timing chains are designed to last the life of the engine and are normally replaced when the engine is rebuilt.

The firing order for a Chevy Malibu is 1, 3, 4, 2. The number one cylinder is located near the main pulley on the engine.

Yes it does, I jus had mine replaced after the water pump went bad...also have them check the tensioner for the chain to make sure it "pumps up" to keep tension on the chain...the guides also just in case the chain had some damage...easier to check while you are in there than have to go back in... The firing order is 153624 with the number 1 being closest to the FIREWALL on the engine. Very important when timing the car. The distributer runs counter clockwise, and the numder 1 position on the distributor is to the left of the top retaining screw or clip when standing at the side of the car looking directly at the distributor. As far as I'm aware, this holds true for the xj6 1981-86. Hope this helps.

The head gasket should tell you which side up it should say top on it the side that says top gose up
