How do you replace the floater in the gas tank of a 1981 Mercury Grand Marquis?
Hey Jan==I imagine when you say floater, you mean the float on the arm for the fuel gauge. This is all part of the fuel gauge and you have to remove the tank, then remove the gauge and install a new one. I don't know why you would change it but make sure it is needed. GoodluckJoe

What does a 1998 Rodeo sound like when the intake manifold gasket is bad?
Your idle will jump up and down. You may also feel a misfire, due to the vacuum leak. You may also hear a hissing sound from the engine. Nice job you nailed it. But if you hear no hissing, you can spray some brake cleaner around the intake manifold. You'll definitly hear it. The cleaner will remove any crap blocking it from the hissing. Easiest gasket to replace.
How do you change an intake manifold gasket on 92 Chevy silverado p-up 5.7V8 2 wd with ac?
First of all, all the upper front accesories have to be removed (alt, ac comp) that have brackets that bolt to the intake, if any. Next would be the carb, linkages, disributor and water neck. After that, it should be ready to remove. Clean off all the old gaskets, and install all the new in reverse, making sure not get any stuff inside the engine. For the distributor timing, mark it when you remove it so installing and timing will be a little easier. Of course, a Chilton or Discount Auto Parts store has repair manuals that have pretty good pictures to help you along, as as well as many other maintanance problems, too.

What does it mean if you have gas in your air filter?
It sits right over the carb, so maybe that needs adjusting.
Actually, I know at least in '88-'01 1.8-1.9L escorts do not have a carb, they are fuel injected. My filter housing is connected to a vacuum manifold, and the housing does smell gassy.
However, an air filter sitting on a carb could have a small amount of gas in it, or smell like gas. When you start the car, the carb or manifold should create negative air pressure (vacuum) which will basically suck the gas back out. If gas is going INTO your air filter from your carb OR manifold (gas splashing into the filter housing), you should have the carb or manifold checked or adjusted.
So, smell/few drops of gas:OK - gas geyser: big problem.

Why does fuel pour into air filter housing on 1984 Honda Prelude dual carbuerator when started?
yep, it's the needle and seat. It's the part inside the carburetor that shuts off fuel flow when the carburetor bowl is full. The needle and seat makes up the shutoff valve that closes the fuel supply when the float rises in the fuel bowl. If it doesn't shut off, fuel floods out into the overflow which typically dumps into the air filter.

How do you tell the Symptoms of a inlet manifold leak V6?
Car is difficult to start, and will not idle. Whistling or sucking sound may be heard, One spark plug may be burning incorrectly.
A stumbling engine, poor idling, possibly having to keep revving it to stop it stalling at idle.
I t would be much easier if you provided the year and make of the car. also if you were looking to diagnose a coolant leak or vacum leak. Generaly a vacum leak in the inlet manifold will result in a rough idle in 1 or more cylinders. The best way I have found to diagnose any vacum leak in an engine is to get a small propane cylinder. Any profesional auto tool supplier such as Snap-on or Mac Tools should have in stock a tool that attaches to the cylinder and alows you to have a small amount of propane to come of the hose end. ( this is called a propane wand) To diagnose start the car and very slowly move the propane wand around the intake manifold and vacum hoses. when you find the laek the engine RPM will increase and smoth out. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFULL NOT TO HAVE TOO MUCH PROPANE COMMING OUT OF THE WAND AS IT IS FLAMABLE. If you are unable to purchase or borrow a propane wand you can try very carefully spraying a little carborator cleaner in the area tou think its not as exact but it will give you a general idea of where the leak is.
Do you use silicon when changing intake gaskets?
It depends really. You don't use it on the gaskets themselves. Not if you got a decent brand of gasket anyway. Some intake gasket sets are supplied with rubber gaskets for the ends. Most of the time I throw those away and use a bead of silicone instead. It stays more pliable and does a better job of sealing than those rubber ones. Even if you do use the rubber end gaskets, put a small dab of silicone in the corners where the rubber gasket and fiber gasket meet.
How did i change my air filter in AC?

I had a 1983 AMC concord it was my first car. Finding parts for them even back in 1989 was tough because they changed their suppliers in mid production. My valve cover leaked oil because of a strange design on how they were fastened to the head. The bolts came out the top of the cover instead of around the rim. I managed to find a kit that replaced the head bolts that has threaded posts to fasten around the edge instead of the factory design. Until you change the bolts you will never get the cover tight enough to not leak. Trust me I tried. Unless your car has a different design, which is possible with an AMC of that year. Try to find one of these kits (they come with a new valve cover and the retro fit head bolts)and then replace the valve cover gasket. Be careful not to tighten it too tight as i did and cracked the cover which was plastic. The bolts should be tightened in inch pounds and not foot pounds. I did foot pounds and it cracked. Good luck! I liked that car it really was nice riding and had good power. I could smoke the tires pretty easily.
