How do you tell if your battery or your starter is bad?
The easiest way is to take it to a parts store where most of them will check them out free. It also helps if we know what kind of car you have. GoodluckJoe
turn your head lights on and try to start it if the headlights go out its more than likely your battery if they stay bright or barely dim its your starter
try the lights, do they turn on? if yes, then it probably isn't the battery. if its the starter motor, you should hear a loud clicking sound from the engine when you turn the key in the ignition. if this is the problem, turn the car off, open the door, stand on the sill at the side of the car while holding the edge of the roof and rock the car. if the car starts after this - its your starter.
If your starter was bad your car would not even crank. If its your battery the starter will click repeatedly.
How do you put on an alternator belt to an 1992 S10 Chevy blazer?
96 grand Cherokee doesnt have a fan belt, its a serpentine belt. And if you look down to the right of the fan there is a pully which acts as the tensioner, youll use a socket to loosen it up and then youll be able to slide the old belt off. Keep the box from the new belt so you can see how the new belt loops around each pulley. Be sure to tighten the belt pretty tight so it has minimal play or youll get some sqeaking whenever you run your AC.
How do you tighten the alternator belt on a Dodge Ram 2500 Van 5.2L V8?
Below is what I did on my 2002 Stratus 2.4L.
Note: This is a description of how I chose to repair my vehicle and should not be taken as me advising anyone in any way on how or whether they manage to repair their own vehicles.
You have to remove the passenger tire and wheel wall to do it.
1) Engaged parking brake, loosened lugs on passenger front tire.
2) Jacked-up and placed jack-stand.
3) Removed piece of black under-carriage which surrounds the oil filter and attaches to front bumper. There are at least 10 plastic push-pins to remove and I managed to destroy half of them in the process.
4) Positoned belt over lower pulleys and tensioner (as best as possible) then used a bungee to hold the top end of belt up while I worked under the car.
5) Used a 3/8 ratchet and inserted into square hole attached to the tensioner, disengaged the tensioner (moves clockwise) then used a brace to keep the ratchet handle in that position.
6) From top, removed bungee and finished placing belt over alternator, checked the position of entire belt, reengaged the tensioner, and replaced wall and wheel.
How do you replace the alternator on a 2000 Chevy Express?
on a 2000 v6 Astro you need to disconnect negative side to battery, remove the air filter housing by loosening the ring clamps to the throttle body, snap off cover, lift out air filter, pull entire unit up off pegs, then remove upper half of fan shroud, theres 7 bolts holding it and they're 10mm. Move top hose out of way before pulling up, it has a couple rubber things holding it it needsto clear. Then put the end of a socket extenion without a socket on it into the square hole below idler where belt is at your extreme left when facing engine, attach a ratchet to it and a bar for leverage and pull and belt will come off. Same thing when you put it back on. Change it if its been on a year or two. There are two bolts at bottom of alternator 13mm i think, and one on backside you'll have to remove the doghouse to get to. A couple of electrical connections back there also.
How to replace an alternator in a 1997 Honda civic?
you must lift up the civic with the driver side tire off then u gotta get the axle loose u might need to remove the whole left side suspention to free up the axle then u gotta get the alternator loose and remove it and then reverse.
/ The alternator can be removed by lifting front of car and driver side suspention lowered so that tire is just touching, then the alternator will have clearance to slide by driver side axle from under vehicle without removing any suspention. My son and I just did this so it should work on yours. (Aug 21, 2008)
How do you replace the alternator on a Ford Escape?
first remove positive battery cable from battery. Then remove front passenger tire, then remove strut and hub, then remove cv axle undo two mounting bolts from bottom, once this is done access to three mounting bracket bolts. to remove mounting bracket then slide alternator btwn frame and engine and replace, have fun this takes avg 4-5 hours!
i found out that if you take out the oil filter u can get to the bolts with easy access. it beats taking of the drive shaft. once the bracket is off you can take it out from the top. it would be easier if you unbolt the tension assembly. it took me about 2 hours to do all this and put back together. $20 extra bucks for the oil beats the extra hours i would have to put into working on the car. have fun :)
OOOOOOOORRRRRRRRR,,,,,,,,
It is possible to remove it from the top of the engine. I know this becasue i just accomplished this in under 3 hours. Start to finish with a coffee break in between. If you want to know exactly how i did it feel free to email me atomic_aura@hotmail.com 03 ford escape v6
In a rechargeable battery system what is the discharging reaction?

How much RPM to produce an 12v dc by an alternator?
A: It all depends on the engine idle speed and cylinders. All cars at idle speed must charge the battery to 13.68 volts the RPM is a function of cinders
Where is the alternator on a Honda Shadow 600?
Stator (alternator) and removal/and installation: 1. Place the bike on the center stand. 2. Remove both side side covers and the seat. 3. Disconnect the battery negative lead. 4. a) 1983-85: disconnect the electrical connector going to the alternator/stator assembly b) 1986 and on: remove the fuel pump stay. Then disconnect the electrical connector going to the alternator/stator assembly. 5. Remove the screw securing the left hand rear crankcase cover and remove the cover. 6. Remove the exhaust system from the rear cylinder. 7. Remove the bolt securing the gear shift pedal and remove the pedal. 8. Remove the bolts securing the left front foot peg and remove the foot peg. Note: in the following step it is not necessary to disconnect the hydraulic from the clutch slave cylinder. If the hydraulic line is disconnected the clutch system must be bled. 9. Remove the bolts securing the clutch slave cylinder and bracket. Remove the bracket and pull the clutch slave cylinder, with the hydraulic line still attached, back and out of the way. 10. Remove the bolt securing the coolant pipe protector and remove the protector. 11. Remove the bolt securing the alternator cover and remove the cover, gasket and the electrical harness from the frame. Note the path of the wire harness as it must be routed the same during installation. 12. Remove the electrical harness from the clips on the frame. 13. Remove the bolt and wire clamp securing the wire to the housing. 14. Remove the bolts securing the alternator/stator to the alternator cover. 15. Carefully pull the rubber grommet and electrical wire harness from the alternator cover. 16. Install by reversing these removal steps, noting the following: 17. Be sure to install the wire clamp. If the clamp is left off the rotor may rub against the wires, wear off the insulation and cause a short in the circuit. I hope this tells you where the alternator is. It may help if you want to remove it.
Why is my 1990 Chevy van G20 alternator not charging and is not getting power?
The alternator is not getting power? At any of the wires or just the main/largest one? If you are testing the large wire, this is the output side that runs to the battery. If there is no power in this wire where it connects to the alternator it must have a bad connection at the alternator or at the battery or a break somewhere in between. If there is power there, I would look at the fuses.
How do you remove the power steering pump alternator bracket on a 1995 Chevy Silverado?
I need help on how to remove my powersteering pump? You must first remove the power steering pump pulley. Most part stores have a tool loaner program so you can borrow the puller and and return it and get your money back. After the pulley is removed there are 3 bolts holding the power steering pump to the bracket. Pull those and the long bracket that is on the back of the pump and connects to the exhaust manifold and alternator and the pump should slide out. This information is for a 5.7L engine, but I believe it is close to the same for a 4.3L.

4. Remove the small bolt under Power Steering Fluid Resevoir. This gives you room to extract Alt.
5. Remove 2 bolts holding Alt in place.
6. Rotate Alt so you can get to power cable. Pull back rubber housing, remove nut.
7. Pull back rubber cover and Squeeze side of plastic electrical connection and pull out. Do not damage. It can be tight from being in there for so long.
8. Slowly extract Alt to left of engine. You may have some minor interference from hoses that require you to push or adjust slightly. Carefully wiggle it around, it will fit.
Now reverse the whole process.
How do you change the alternator on a Ford Fiesta?
Hello, Jamison here, This is not A difficult job, It should take YOU about 2 hours, Note how the belt is routed, It should have A sticker that showes A picture,,, Disconnect the battery, Remove the belt, This is done by locating the tensioner and pulling back from the belt (it is spring loaded)using A ratchet or A wrench, It may have A square hole in the moveable part of the housing if so A ratchet will fit in the hole,,,, now just unbolt the alternator and disconnect the wires, There will be A plug in wire and A bolt on wire, BE CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE THE WIRE ENDS, Also DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE NEW unit while putting on the bolted wire.,, Good luck, Jamison. If you have difficulty finding the tensioner, Just pull HARD on the belt were it has A strait spot, act like you are trying to check the tension of the belt, BUT PULL hard, The tensioner will let out slack, Just look for the part that moved,, Also this will help you identify the dirrection that you need to move the tensioner to remove the belt.........
How do you replace the alternator on a 1995 Saturn sl?
It is relatively simple for any car:
1) Disconnect the battery. This is incredibly important. Do not skip this step.
2) Disconnect the wiring from the back of the old alternator.
3) Remove the belt from the alternator pulley.
3a) If the belt is serpentine look for a spring loaded tension pulley. Push on this and slip the belt off a convenient pulley. The entire belt will go slack.
3b) If you have individual belts the alternator should be mounted on a slotted bracket. Loosen the bolt to this bracket and the alternator should move so you can get the belt off.
4) Remove the old alternator. Depending on the car this is where it gets tricky. Sometimes they bury the thing so well you have to remove other parts of the engine to get it off. Take your time.
5) Insert the new alternator and replace anything else you had to take off.
6) Put the belt back on the alternator and tension it, if necessary.
7) Connect the wiring to the alternator
8) Reconnect the battery.
9) Take a measurement of the system voltage with the motor off.
10) start the motor.
11) Take a measurement of the system voltage. It should be around 14V. If your battery is very dead this may not be the case. Compare to the above measurement. If the voltage is rising to around 14V, it is working.
To get to the alternator, you have to get it from the bottom of the car. Make sure you disconnect the battery! I just did the job today (2-13-06) with another person. You don't need 2 people, but it helps tremendously. It's rather tight in some of the locations, but it's definitely workable.
First, you must remove the front passenger side wheel and place the car up on Jack stands. It helps to have the whole front elevated as you will be working underneath the car most of the time. Then remove the plastic guards that are behind the wheel. They are held in place by two plastic pins (the anchor type pins).
Once the car is up, refer to the diagram under the hood that gives the serpentine belt routing. You'll see the Tension wheel that you need to move. It's really easy to get to from the wheel axle level. Use a 14mm wrench (NOT A SOCKET!, it's too small of a space to fit the barrel of the socket). Grab onto the bolt head on the wheel and turn clockwise. The whole assembly then moves down, as it's on a spring. That will loosen the Serpentine belt. If you have another person, have them remove the serpentine belt from one of the pulleys as you are holding down the tension pulley. Once the belt is off, ease the tension pulley back into place. You can now pull the belt off all the pulleys.
The alternator is held in by two bolts. they are 13mm bolts, you can use a socket for these. The top bolt is harder to find and easier to reach and loosen if you do it from the bottom of the car. It takes time to loosen, but it can be done. The bottom is a long bolt with a nut on the end. You'll need a 13mm wrench and a 13mm socket for this. From under the car looking at the alternator, place the wrench on the left side of the bolt and the socket wrench on the right. The right side is a nut that holds the bolt in place. Remove the nut and pull the bolt out to the left.
Next, there is a plastic guard that protects the wiring. You can remove that by using a 10mm ratchet on the bolt that is on the left hand side (from underneath the car) of the alternator. it sits just above the grounding wire. Remove that bolt. If you have someone helping, have them reach through the top of the car and hold the alternator in place while pushing the guard up. It is also held by a little clip, so if you push up you'll unlatch it. Pull the guard off and set aside.
Next, remove the grounding wire on the side with a 10mm socket wrench. Then unclasp the clip holding the wiring to the alternator with a flat head screw driver. You'll see how the clip is removed when you see it.
Next, remove the alternator. It may be stuck in place, so have someone come from the top or from the bottom to pound one of the sides where the long bolt was. Once free, remove it through the wheel well.
Once you have this done, just reverse the directions to install the new one. It's fairly easy once you've removed it, to see how it's done.
Hook up the battery and start the car!

How do you measure insulation resistance between windings for 120KVA alternator?
Use a megger or a insulation tester. Place one lead on any of the phases nd other lead the alternator boy. Observe the indicator. In megger it s good with infinity or it must be minimum 100M OHM, IF IT SHOWs 50 it could be coz of moisture in winding by heating the alternator the insulation resistance value may improve
What are the parts of a direct current generator?
there are many parts of a dc generator
armature,
field coil,
yoke,
body,
rotor and commutator.
How do you modify an automobile alternator from DC to AC?
The automobile alternator is already an AC device. It generates three phase delta AC, which is then rectified with a six diode full wave bridge array into DC.
You don't really want to modify it, though, as it is designed for the specific application. It is possible, though, to connect to the stator terminals and access three phase AC. You would then need to redesign the exciter (rotor) control circuit in order to manage the output.
If you are thinking about doing this as an alternative to a generator to supply your home during a power outage, don't; its not worth the effort - buy a generator.
What is the function of a rectifier within an alternator?
A rectifier turns the Alternating Current (AC) produced by the Alternator into Direct Current (DC) that your car uses.
What kind of electricity does an alternator make DC or AC?
It makes AC ( alternating current ) . That's why it's called an alternator. A DC generator would usually be called a dynamo.
What are the cooling methods used for cooling an alternator?
Air cooling ,hydrogen gas cooling ,water cooling
