You need to use an ammeter - usually the current setting on a multi-meter. The meter should be connected to the circuit in series.

Loosen the alternator tensioner bolt. You will be able to slide the alternator either way to adjust the tension on the belt.

if its anything like a 1998 rodeo,unhook serpentine belt(1 pully wheel is adjustable),and radiator hose, down in bottom left of engine, remove 2 or 3 bolts, unhook ground wire, pull out alternator (this is tricky), after you get new alternator, there is 1 bolt that is very tricky to get back in, its helpful to wedge it with a large screw driver or something, then replace all bolts and ground wire (very important), replace hoses and belt, and you are good to go.

ADD ON; I have done a '98 as well and you don't have to disconnect the radiator hose and go thru the hassle with that. Once unbolted, the alternator can be removed (under the car, not up and out the top) and can be snaked around the radiator hose.

CORRECTION: you must remove the coolant transfer pipe( Radiator Hose) as to be sure not to break this very fragile(expensive) part off of the 2.2l four cyc. the 3.2l is made by Isuzu and 2.2l is made by GM very different engines

The first thing you have to check is the kind of alternator that your truck needs. You must check this out with care because there are different models for different years. Then you start by disconnecting the negative battery cable with a wrench, preferably a socket wrench. You have to remove the radiator support where it is attached to the car frame seal. Detach the radiator fan shroud and the "V" bank shield on the same side. Then you disconnect the electric wiring harness from the alternator, after that you loosen the nut on the alternator terminal in order to disconnect the positive battery cable. The alternator belt comes off at this stage and so does the alternator itself. Then you install the new alternator in a reverse process from that described above. Tighten the main bolts that hold the alternator in place using a torque wrench with 32 foot-pounds force. In case you don't have a torque wrench make sure it is properly fastened and won't budge. Connect the negative battery cable last. After installation, check for abnormal noises and make sure the alternator belt is not too tight, i.e. it should give a little when pressure is put on it from the side, such as half a centimeter. Tighten the belt in case there is slipping or whining noise from a belt that is too lose.

There are a couple of things that can drain the battery on your impala. If you have a new battery and it is dead overnight and you have to jump start it, check your positive and negative cables to be sure they are secured properly and not loose at any connection point. You might also have a short in your wiring that is not alowing the power to be turned off to a sourse, ie. a speaker, the radio, any thing such as an electornic compass, thermometor, or dome light. Also if you have an auto start on your vehicle try turning the switch to an off position when you turn off the car. If that fixes it. take it back to the installer and have them fix their install. The 1997 Tercel's alternator is located (if your looking from the front of the car) on the lower left side of the engine. It can be accessed from the underside of the car after removing the shield under the car.

changing an alternator is easy.

Use a tie iron from your spare tire kit. Slide it between the front of the housing and the frame of the body. To make it simple the tire iron should run up and down and rest just to the left of the neck of the fill cap for your radiator. Pull back on the tire iron to apply pressure against the alternator.

*Before you do the above mentioned step: There should be a tensioner that applies tension to the belts. Look at that part and there is probably a square hole that is fit for a standard socket wrench. If so, attach your socket wrench and use it to pull the tensioner and release the tension so that you may remove the belt from the alternator. Once the belt is removed from the alternator, the other two bolts should come out pretty easy. Once they are removed you can get better access to the other cables attached to the alternator. Same process for releasing tension to put the belt back on once the alternator is bolted back in.

Remove the top screw and slowly ease back on the tire iron. The alternator acts like a tensioning device for the serpentine belt...this is why you have to apply slight pressure. If you don't apply pressure you can still back out the top screw, but it will "pop" on you, possible injury may occur. After removing the top screw, remove your bottom screw and work the alternator left and right to lossen it from the engine mount...This part is difficult!! Unplug your electrical connection by lifting on the plastic latch and pulling out slowly. You have a screw to remove which takes a 13mm socket. Use the reverse order to install the new one....remember to apply pressure when putting your top screw back in...good luck. I did this yestersay it took about 20 minutes...i am not a mechanic!

ANSWER 1 - April 5, 2008 I have a 1997 Isuzu Rodeo which has the same engine as your Passport, assuming you have a 3.2L V6. I have had the same problem as you, putting 3 different remanufactured alternators on with no success. I finally went to an auto electric shop and got an new alternator (vs. remanufactured) and it fixed the problem, all to the tune of $514.00 for labor and the alternator! Remanufactured alternators have bad voltage regulators in them. On the Rodeo and Passport, the voltage regulators are grounded to the Engine Control Module. The Heater/AC blower is also grounded here also, so when the alternator is not charging, the blower doesn't work. On the right side of this type of alternator, there is a plug connection. The alternator has the "male" terminals, while the "female" terminals are from the vehicles electrical system. One of the "male" terminals, known as the "C" terminal, connects the voltage regulator to the ECM (engine control module). As stated previously, in remanufactured alternators, the voltage regulators appear to be faulty, a problem that has been in exsistence since the 1980's, whereas the voltage regulators do not emit the proper voltage. While I did get all of the remanufactured alternators from Advance Auto Parts, they obviously to not remanufacture them, so it is not really Advance Auto Parts blame, however I wonder why they continue to sell them, as a recall has been previously issued regarding this problem. I am confident that if you replace your alternator with a completely new one, not remanufactured, and your problems should cease to exsist! In addition to the above, obviously you should disconnect your battery prior to doing anything, check the tension of your belts(s), and make sure your battery is ok. It they're all OK, drive (if it's drivable) to an auto parts store and have them test your alternator. If the alternator tests OK, have them test the starter. Chances are, one of those items are the culprit.
