My neibor recently had the same problem with his 89 Probe. First remove and check the spark plugs. Fuel-Injector Cleaners, etc. tend to foul out the plugs. They may or may not need replaced. Just take them out and if they are black and/or look or feel wet, clean them up with a wire brush and a clean cloth and put them back in. If it still wont stay running, check the computer for codes. The procedure shouldn't be too hard to find on Google or similar. subminted by MiddleEartHippie(on AIM) I just had this problem with my 89 probe and it drove me crazy, turned out to be distributor needed replacement, also my tachometer went alittle hay wire while i kept foot on gas to keep it running.

Without doing a "hands on" troubleshooting of your vehicle, none of us can tell you specifically what is the cause of the problem.
Therefore this answer will be generic in nature. Here are some possible causes that I can think of at the moment:
- A connector has become disconnected or loose somewhere in the "start" circuit.
- Corrosion or road film has developed on the metal contacts within a connector or terminal connection.
- A wire has become cut or broken.
- The starter solenoid has become defective.
- The ignition switch start contacts have become defective.
- The starter has become defective.

A car may take longer to start in extreme cold, especially if it has an older, weaker battery. In any temperature, a car will take longer to start if it has a dying battery.
Try unpluging the Ignition control module while the key is in the on position. Wait until you here the relays click, then plug it back in, next do not shut the hood or door, try starting it. If it starts, then you either have a bad Ignition module, bad harness connector or a sticking relay. This is the problem I have on my 94, but it happens more when it is hot. I discvered this while searching the internet for my prolem. I saw this for both hot and cold conditions. It is call the famous Ford connector wiggle test. Good luck. replace entire ignition switch. refer to Mitchell Manuel for precise removal instructions and special tools needed. ++ ANSWER ++ Mine did that for about a month. I just kept turning 97 Blazer on and off till it released the key. Been about a year and it hasn't repeated. Sure was frustrating. At one point I was leaving the key in it (throw a towel over the column) and used a spare key to get in & out. That is what insurance is for right?!!

Try turning the engine over with a wrench on the end of the crankshaft, removing the sparkplugs will make this easier, if you're unable to turn it, then it's seized. You will possibly need to do a full engine overhaul, to have any chance of starting it.
However, if you can turn it over this way, the fuel is likely to be 'Stale', the complete fuel system will need to be drained, cleaned (especially the fuel tank and carburettor), filters replaced and refilled with fresh fuel. Also check the ignition system, ensuring that there are sparks on all plugs (preferably new ones).
