replace the coils and the module, helped for my 98 firebird. parts for me were about 170 at napa and I know mechanics so labor was free. it's easy to install.
Another thing to do is replace the ignition control module. This can cause a random misfire if it is faulty or even if the wire harness going to it is not bolted tightly to it.
hey this is joey. replace the vacuum line for the egr gas return. i had the same problem and nearly got fustrated to the point of taking a sledge hammer to my car. i had replaced my ignition control unit. all three coils spark plugs and wires and still had the random misfire code. when i replaced the vacuum it cleared everything out and now my car is running like a dream. hopefully it will work for you too.
What causes random misfire on 1996 S-10 pickup?
Many things can cause such an issue, but the one issue that is solely S-10 related is that the earlier-model poppet-style fuel injectors used in the '96-and-up model year Vortec engines were prone to sticking open or sticking shut after a large mileage buildup. Gm was even forced to address the issue in the early '00's by updating the injector style. The new injectors had the same flow rate, but were designed in such a way as to alleviate the problems found in the earlier ones. There was even a forced recall/replacement in the state of CA due to a lawsuit by the EPA in that state, claiming the poor design was leading to a higher-than-average rate of emissions testing failures in the above-described model years. This is oftentimes the culprit in the 4.3 engines when all the other standard solutions have been exhausted, ie: spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor, etc...
If that is the only code you are getting and the car has high mileage (90k +), the odds are in favor or the front pre-catalyst needing replacement. That car has 2 pre-catalyst converters, one for each bank, that run from the exhaust manifold towards the catalyst itself. The first one (also called front bank, left bank or bank 2) is the closest to the radiator. The second one (also called rear bank, right bank or bank 1) is the one right before the catalyst. That code is for the front pre-cat wich has a limited life of service before getting clogged up and needing replacement.

If it's throttle body injected it's probably NOT a fuel problem but there's still a possibility.
* It COULD be electrical (spark) in which case it's possible that it's something like a coil pack, distributor cap, plug wire or sparkplug. * It COULD be a sticking or burned valve. Now you just have to find out which.

The only way to check this is to have a compression test performed. After the test the problem cylinder will be indentified. As a tech I would put compressed air into the bad cylinder to see if the air escapes. If you aren't familiar with major automotive workings, this may sound like rocket science. If you had it to a shop and this was what you were told, I would assume it to be true. If you are n't feeling too trustworthy of that shop there is some other things to consider. If you have the rough running condition, you could have a bad ignition component causing the rough run condition. I have seen many mis diagnosis outside of our shop. The only true way is to perform the compression test for starters. This will accurately let you know if you have an internal engine problem.

The Millenias and their Commonwealth cousins the "Xedos" all suffered a common defect resulting in MOST CEL issues. This engine configuration typically results in the need for replacement of 1 to 2 O2 sensors and / or the DREADED KNOCK Sensor embedded deep in the Manifold assembly. Mine ran 3 years with this CEL on due to the cost of labour one item to replace. The sensor was only 165 bucks while the labour to install was nearly 800.
I will admit once it was replaced I was not only legal again for the Emmissions test, but the thing ran smoother than it ever did ina ll seasons PLUS I got nearly 2 points to my highway Mileage.
Now the codes are confusing on this because two of the O2 sensors share the same circuit and the code wont necessarily identify WHICH o2 is actually bad, that unfortunately is hit or miss. The KNOCK sensor code is separate and distinct however but all will result in a costly set of repairs.

WRONG. 2 sensors share the same circuit? where do you get this from? i am looking at the wiring diagram, and there is no such thing. each sensor is on it's own circuit. labor is 800? man, that shop must love you. a generic sensor will cost about 30 bucks. with the proper tools, a post cat sensor will take about 30 minutes to change. on a 2.3, the left bank pre cat sensor is easy, but you have to remove a lot of stuff to get at it, especially the connector. right bank is about 30 min, too. for 165 each, and 800 for labor, i would change all 4 sensors, all the brakes, oil and filter, trans fluid, brake fluid, coolant, rotate all the tires, and buy a steak dinner for the customer, all in about 6 hours, with a nap in between

My 1995 SSE is a transition car. The government wasn't sure what OBD2 would be, so they pre-released OBD2 to see how the car builders would react. GM reacted by hastily building cars with this version of OBD2. Shortly thereafter, the government released the ACTUAL OBD2 standard. They may CALL your car OBD2, but it may be a TRANSISION OBD2.
The result? If you have an OBD1 car, you can get the error codes from the check engine light.
If you have an OBD2 car, you must use a scan tool to retrieve and reset the codes. BUT, if you have a transition car like mine, you are neither OBD1 NOR OBD2. You have one of the infamous transition cars. They have an OBD2 plug (computer) connector, but an OBD2 scan tool will not read them! What you must make sure of when you buy a scan tool is that it will read transition cars. Some of these tools require a special adapter or cable to read transition cars.
I hope you are not one of the transition people. If you're not, then your 95 is an OBD2 and any OBD2 reader will get the job done.
