Did anyone ever experienced a loud popping cracking noise while driving a 2001 Chevrolet Impala?
It first started under warranty. They first lubed the steering column which lasted 2 years, then after the sound reappeared, they replaced the steering column. Now 2007 it has returned again and they will only fix it, if I agree to pay half of the amount and agree to have major gasket repair work down at Ewald Chevrolet in Oconomowoc for $850. Ewald is a crook. They went fishing looking for anything wrong with my car and came up with a bad gasket. They said to prove that I am a loyal customer and am acting in good faith I should agree to have them perform all of the work. This has nothing to do with the steering column noise. I had the knocking noise since I bought the car new and now Chevrolet will not repair this ongoing problem. They stink, their product stinks, I can't wait to sell this Impala and will never own a Chevrolet again. Going Toyota from now on.
AnswerI've been told a brace behind the dash made of molybdenum (or magnesium... can't remember) can give a loud crack/pop sound. I know about the problem in the answer above - that one is more of a dull , muted clunking sound. If the one you're talking about is very loud, a single pop/crack, and not happening very often, it's most likely the brace. It's not supposed to be an issue, just expansion/contraction.I have a 2001 Chevy Impala and experienced this same problem. The cause of this noise is the steering shaft. While my car was under warranty I took it in and was told there was a Technical service bulletin (TSB) requiring the shaft to be re-lubed, as with your car after a while the noise came back. With my warranty now expired I took the car to my regular mechanic who changed the shaft out solving the problem for about $120.00. The TSB had changed from replacing steering shaft to just the lube (cheap temp. fix).

The 'air bag' light is on in your 2000 Impala how do you turn it off?
The only way to turn it off is to correct the problem turning it on, once corrected it will turn off by itself. It being on shows that there is a current problem and that no air bags will deploy in the event of an accident until the light is off There is a "clockspring" in the steering column that is probably broken. When the clockspring breaks, the airbag light comes on. The "clockspring" takes the place of the old slip rings and spring loaded contacts used in older cars to transfer circuits from the steering wheel to the stationary column making the airbag, horn and speed control operational. To replace involves removing the airbag. Take it to the dealer. There was a recall on many 2000 Impala's concerning the air bag system. The light on our Impala would turn on & off intermittently before we took it in. The dealer will be able to do a VIN search to see if your vehicle has had the service performed or not.
How do you jump start a 2001 Aurora?
place wires on the pos. and neg. battery terminals as in any vehicle and connect them to a another running cars batteries or a battery charger/jumper (battery is located under the back seat) Since the battery on the Aurora in under the rear seat, it is better to open the hood and connect to the positive terminal on the passenger side of the car next to the fuse block. There is a red cover over this terminal. Connect the negative cable to a good ground on the engine block, out of the way of moving parts. Caution make sure not to connect to any of the A/C lines/parts as they are not grounded (these are tempting since they are readily accessible.)

Will 26 inch rims fit on a 96 impala ss with out lift kit?
Since nobody answered this I will take a stab at it... To fit 26" rims and tires on my 96 impala SS you will need 275/25/26 inch tires... The old problem we have with tucking big wheels on 94-96 impala's is the rear tire moving to close to the front of the rear wheel well... But they make rear extenders for that to center the wheel back there... But some people managed to pull it off without
(1) Check your oil (you are looking for engine coolant) if there is engine coolant in the oil then you have a crack manifold gasket. This maybe covered by GM due to a faulty gasket issue so check with your dealer.
(2) Electrical fan on the engine is not turning on (sensor, fuse/relay or short)
(3) You are using the wrong coolant (universal-green and not dex cool - pink) it does make a difference
(4) Cat can be clogged but it is unlikely that you would be able to run the car for 30 minutes.
(5) You have indicated water (water no longer cools today's modern engine but in a pinch will allow you to get to a service station for replacement)
(6) just made a repair on the same car with the same problem, found that the impeller on the water pump was gone. replaced water pump, flushed system, ran it and never got about 200 deg. hope this helps

That is a very tough question without seeing the car. Here is the best I can do:
If the car is in running condition and needs only minor repairs for restoration it is considered to be "low retail" $16000
Average retail is considered to be a 20 footer and around $31000
High retail is a professional restoration and is considered to be a "100 point" vehicle and is usually priced around $44100

How do you release tension on serpentine belt on 2004 Chevy Impala?
Find the tensioner, rotate it clockwise. I don't remember offhand what type of tool the tensioner requires for this vehicle... it'll either be a 3/8" drive ratchet inserted directly into the tensioner, or a socket (15mm is typical of GM).
The heater temperature sensor is probably disconnected. The ground wire is either loose or not connected at all. The sensor may need to be replaced.
A Caliper Reset Tool is a tool used to 'reset' the brake caliper piston on calipers with an integral handbrake system. The tool spins the piston while applying pressure to compress it enough to replace the old pads with newer thicker ones.
