What is the low dragging noise caused by with your 1997 Daewoo Lanos It only happens when you are braking mostly at low speeds?

It is usually a wheel bearing that does this, one or more of your wheel bearings is worn out. When you apply the brakes they set the wheel hub off balance and therefore the wheel drags because of the bearing being so worn. To check this take the wheel rim off and try and rock the wheel hub, if it feels loose or it makes sound, your bearing is worn and you would have to replace it, this is quite a difficult job if you don't have the right tools though. A worn wheel bearing can also put strain on your power steering system if it is a front wheel bearing that is worn.

How and when do you change transmission oil on a Daewoo Lanos 16 L?

Most of these Daewoos out on the market today do not come with owner's manuals any more, or spare tires, or radio reset codes, or jackstands for that matter. Mine didn't. The general public (including GM) has scrapped Daewoo, that's why they're so cheap. I also need to know how to check the fluid. Most cars with an A/T require the transmission to be hot, engine idling in park, to check the fluid level, but not all. On some you check it cold engine off. The problem with not knowing for sure is that overfilling the transmission can damage it. For that reason I suggest you get that owner's manual you are missing. Sources are dealer, salvage yard, e-bay, and many on-line sites. Search with the term, "Automobile Owner's Manual". Draining and changing the fluid can either be accomplished by removing the drain plug if it has one or by removing the return line from the radiator and with a helper starting the engine and allowing the trans pump to pump the fluid out one quart at a time. Pump out one quart in a clear container and then stop the engine and add a quart of fresh fluid. Keep doing this until you see clear clean fluid. This will actually remove all the fluid and is better than just draining the transmission pan, which only removes some of the fluid. You will also need to know the exact type fluid to add. A call to the dealer can get you this info.

Does attempting to start a Daewoo Lanos 1.6L with a broken timing belt damage valves?

REPLY TO QUESTION: Does attempting to start a Daewoo Lanos 1.6L with a broken timing belt damage valves?"

It depends on how badly damaged the belt is. if all the teeth are still attached to the belt and you havent sheard them off already then it could damgae the valves due to the fact the timing belt may still turn from the crank and turn the camshaft. that would be the case if the belt has strecthed and jumped a tooth on the gears. then dont attempt to start. Now if all the teeth are sheard off the belt down by the crank then the belt has no way of turning so in that case the crank will turn from the starter but it will not turn the camshaft if that is the case then it wont damage the valves.

Dear Daewoo owner,

As an experinced ASE cerified automotive techinican this is my opinion on the situation. ALL BROKEN TIMING BELTS ON DAEWOOS WILL CAUSE CYLINDER HEAD DAMAGE. If your crankshaft is turning, that means the pistons are going up and down in the cylinder bore, you will have atleast 3 or 4 valves all the way open the piston will hit the fully open valves and bend them if not completely break them off. I have put atleast 20 to 30 cyl. heads on Daewoos due to broken timing belts.

every daewoo that breaks a t-belt will bend valves

Yes and we found out the hard way....

Where can you purchase a code scanner for Daewoo Lanos?

By code scanner, I assume you mean an OBDII scanner to scan the dignostic codes from your vehicle's computer. OBDII scanners are available at most auto parts stores. I bought one at Walmart for about $60. You don't mention what year model your vehicle is, but if it 1995 or later, an OBDII scanner is necessary, If it is pre-1995, you may be able to retrieve the codes manually. . . . check your public library to see if there is a repair manual (Haynes or Chilton) for your vehicle available for checkout. The manual will have instructions on how to obtain the codes and what each code means.

What does the engine warning sign mean on a Daewoo Lanos?

If the light is still on, take your car to autozone. they will plug in the reader and tell you what part is complaining, and they do this for free. That doesn't mean that that's the part to replace however, it could be complaining because another part isn't acting right, so be careful not to leap into action too quickly.

Yes, I believe that Chevy bought the Lanos and Suzuki bought the Nubrias and the other one.

AnswerSomething is wrong with the emissions system. For me it was the injector for the 3rd cylinder. It can also be the gas cap. Try that first if you can find one.

Added 3/08/06The loose gas cap is a good answer, and I made a trip to the dealership to find that out. Rather embarrasing.....However, my check engine light has been on for about 3 years now. The dealership told me that my problem is due to a glitch in the computer which is either being caused by the catalytic converter or the O2 sensor, both of which are functioning properly, but one of them is setting off something in the computer which is causing the check engine light to stay on. They have reset it, only to have it come back on about 2-3 days later. I've driven it for 3 years with no problem. If all your fluid levels are fine and the car is driving properly, I wouldn't be terribly concerned. But it's always a good idea to have someone read the active codes to make sure a more serious problem isn't lurking underneath. Also, over the past year or so, I've noticed that evertime I drive over 70 mph, my check engine light starts flashing. When I shut off the ignition and restart the car, the check engine light is still on, but not flashing. Any ideas anyone? The car is still driving fine. Almost 120,000 miles, paid off, this is the best car I've ever owned. I'd buy another if Daewoo was still operating. I believe this car is now being made by under the Suzuki name?

AnswerThe engine warning sign is illuminated any time an emissions related fault is found by the computer. This could range anywhere from the gas cap being loose to a much more serious problem. The only way to know for sure is to have someone use a diagnostic tool to read the code. Just a note, if the engine warning light ever starts flashing while the car is running, you need to stop the car somewhere safe if you are driving and shut the car off. If you continue driving, very serious damage can occur to the engine or the catalytic convertor. What this means to the layperson is that by continuing to drive the vehicle under these circumstances you could incur some very high repair bills.
