Where is the tension pulley for a '97 Mercury Sable GS?
The tension pulley is in the center of the sepentine belt, it is one of the smaller pullies that is smooth on top. You will feel a bolt on the fron of it (a 15 millimeter I believe) you need to put the wrench on it and hook a cheater bar, or another wrench (lock the ends together) and pull down towards the front of the car. When the belt is loose slip it off. It is much easier to do with two people. CAUTION! This pulley is sring loaded and very hard to pull down, if you loose your grip or your wrench slips you or the person helping could be seriously injured.
How do you find the crankshaft timing mark at tdc 95 mercury mystique 20 engine?
I'm not familiar with your particular model, but most crankshafts (CS) don't have a visable timing mark on them. Today's cars use a sensor that runs by a point on the CS in order to achieve proper timing. If the timing chain gear is still on the CS then you can look here. On this gear you will notice a dot/notch on one of the teeth. When this dot/notch is at the 12:00 position, the #1 cylinder piston is at top dead center (tdc). I cannot say this applies to all engines. I always pull the sparkplug out of the #1 cylinder and double check to make sure everything agrees.

First remove the battery then you should be able to spot the belt tensioner. It will be the smaller pulley that is attached to the engine by an aluminum arm. There is a square hole cut in the aluminum arm that you can simply stick a 1/2 ratchet in. Then push the ratchet towards the car and this will release the pressure on the belt. Be careful not to let the tensioner snap back it could damage it or bust your knuckles. Proceed remove the old belt and follow the belt routing diagram that should be located on a panel under the hood somewhere. Route the belt around everything except for the power steering pump. Now push the tensioner again and pull the belt over the power steering pump and slowly let the tensioner back and your done.
Added note - When you replace a belt always check the belt tensioner for proper pressure. This can be done using a torqure wrench set it to 110 ft/lbs for this vehicle. Failure to check the belt tensioner can result in excessive wear on the belt and premature breaking. A good rule of thumb is to replace the belt tensioner the same time you replace the belt.

I had to rent the 'pulley puller', and remove the pulley prior to removing the power steering pump. How do you change an idler pulley for a 95 Ford Mustang 3.8L V6?
Tools: Eye protection, wrench, Allen wrench or both to loosen the idler pully, a socket and long handled braker bar to loosen the tensioner. First, check the size of the wrench you will need to remove the idler pully (either a nut on the back of the pully or an Allen wrench from the front.) do not loosen! Next find a socket that will fit the tensioner (The tensioner is the only pully on an arm) At the tensioner there is a nut that the socket will fit (don't worry you cannot remove the nut as it is built into the tensioner) attach socket and braker bar to the tensioner. Either push or pull the braker bar and the tensioner will either tighten the serpentine belt or loosen it. Loosen it and hold breaker bar in place by letting it rest against something (holding the breaker bar for 10 to 15 minutes is the pitts) Only pull the belt off one pully (such as the alternator or AC) Once the belt is off one of the pullys, slowly release the breaker bar. It will travel beyond its normal traveling area. You may have to put the belt back on the tensioner and reposition the socket and breaker bar to get the travel you need to remove the belt. If you are changing the belt, make sure you have a diagram to reinstall the belt. The idler pully can now be removed using the other wrench. To reinstall reverse the procedure and slip the belt over the pullys and check to make sure that all the belt grooves are in all the pully grooves. Have someone start the car with instructions to shut the car off immediatly if the belt is not installed correctly. (Be extra carefull when starting the car. Do not get to close as if the belt is installed incorrectly it can jump out and bite you) tata G
