A serpentine belt is a single, continuous belt utilized in driving devices – such as power steering pump, alternator and others – in an automotive engine. First used by Mercedes-Benz, the belt is more efficient than the older multiple belt system.

How do you replace a serpentine belt on a 1996 Olds 88 3.8 V6?

serpentine belt replacement '96 olds 88Found out the hard way (by doing) and was surprised to see a short cut. Remove the plastic splash shield behind the right wheel. It is held with a plastic rivet which is removable. You can now see and remove the motor mount nut and stud nearest to the A/C compressor. Knock out the spacer and route the belt in through there (the real trick, routing the belt then is cake!). Make sure the belt splines are lined up with the pulley groves. Start the car and make sure the belt is properly aligned before final assembly. Replacing the spacer then requires grinding a 20 deg. bevel off one side of the end of the spacer. This will let you tap the spacer back in place. Replace stud and nut and your good to go!

How do you replace the serpentine belt on a 1994 v6 3.0 Ford Taurus?

Most cars and trucks today have what is called a serpentine belt which runs most accessories. They are very dependable and usually easy to replace. To decide if your belt needs replacing, simply look at the grooved side of the belt to see if it is cracking badly. A couple of cracks every 3 inches is normal, but if you see cracks every 1-2 inches I would recommend that you replace it. On most cars and trucks the procedure is basically the same. First off, get the correct belt by bringing your cars VIN number to the parts store(located on your cars dashboard) the parts store may need it. If there are two choices, get them both so you can complete the repair. Once you have the correct belt, take a minute to review how the belt runs across the pulleys and also check to see if your car/ truck has a underhood diagram of belt routing in case you need it. In most cases you will need a socket wrench or breaker bar with either a 3/8" and /or 1/2" head on it and possibly a short extension. Some models may require a wrench of these similar sizes. Now that you are ready to go to work, you will need to find the spring loaded tensioner which is generally located near the top of the belt path; it usually has a shinny pulley on it. Look at the tensioner and insert the tool into it and apply opposing pressure to release the belt. Now, simply install the new belt making sure it fits into the grooves on all the pulleys. Start the car to check it and you are done and you saved yourelf some money!

How can you tighten the serpentine belt on a 1986 Mercedes Benz 300E-6 cylinders?

Generally, most serpentine belts use a tensioner to maintain tension on the main belt; if it seems loose your tensioner may be weak. The tensioner is usually located near the top of the belt path and has a pulley attached to it. If the belt you are asking about simply drives one accessory, then it most certainly has to have a means of tightening it. Check on or under the accessory that it drives for the tightener.

Another Answer:

Here's how you tighten the belt. The above is correct but vague. You need more information. Take a look at the top of the engine, close to the front. Find the water pump pulley and water pump. Close behind that is a thing sticking up at an angle that looks like a bolt head, only the head is long. This is the tensioner adjusting bolt. I believe it's an 11 mm fit, but it may be a 13 mm. Slip the socket on this little bolt and turn it clockwise to tighten. Be careful. Turn it in 1/4 or 1/2 turn increments. If you get too tight with it, you'll break off the attachment down below on the tensioner, and the tensioner itself is hard to remove. After each adjustment, check the belt tightness. Again, don't overdo it or you'll be taking it to the dealer...or replacing the tensioner yourself, which isn't fun.

What is tension in an earthquake?

The Tension Capable Bearing can accommodate structure vertical loads that vary from compression to tension during seismic movements. This bearing can substantially reduce structural framing costs by preventing uplift of a primary structural member, and can eliminate concerns regarding potential structure overturning or large vertical earthquake motions

How do you change serpentine belt on 2003 Chevy Silverado?

first you need to be sure you know how the old one is routed, either by the diagram near the radiator or by making your own. there is an "inside" and an "outside" to the belt. next locate the tensioner pulley. its usually attached to the alternator. its the only pulley that isn't attached to/drive anything. put a wrench on the tensioner and slack the belt. remove the old one. compare it to the new one to be certain its the correct replacement. rout the new belt around all the pulleys making sure to insert the belt onto the tensioner last because you will have to slack the tensioner to get the belt on. pay attention to the way the belt "faces" each pulley.

How do you replace the serpentine belt on a 1994 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 liter V8 with AC?

To replace the sepentine belt you have to first find the tensioner. You should have a diagram under the hood, on top of the radiator that can tell you which one is the tensioner and how the belt suppose to be hooked up to the different pulleys. When you find the tensioner, you have to use either a rachet or a wrench to release the tension to pry the belt out. You can also go to autozone.com and get more info about this.

How do you install a serpentine belt on a Buick Skylark?

You will have to loosen tentioner to get belt off of all pulleys. Then you need to jack up engine or pick up engine with a lift of some kind, just enough to hold engine in place while you remove upper engine mount, this has to be done so as to slip belt past mount and off engine. Then put new belt in position and bolt mount back in place. Release jack or lift. I usually put belt back on everything but alternator, pull on tensioner and roll back over alternator. This is on a 3100 engine, or 3.1 liter. Hope this helps

How do you change a fan belt in a Ford Taurus?

I'm weak on Ford's, but all cars are pretty much alike. You will have a tension pulley on the serpentine belt that is probably spring loaded. It will be the pulley probably towards the top of the motor with nothing on it. Some are spring loaded and you pry them away from the direction they are pushing on the belt. Some are fixed and adjust up and down with a long bolt. Either type is fairly easy to change, just make sure you know how the belt is routed or look on the hood or radiator support and see it there is a routing diagram.

Is there an alternator belt adjuster on a 1994 Geo Prism 1.8?

If the alternator is driven by a drive belt, the answer is yes. You adjust the tension by loosing the bolts on the alternator mounting brackets and sliding the alternator until the proper tension, (around 1/4" deflection at mid point of the belt) is achieved. If however it has a Serpentine Belt driving the alternator, then there is no adjustment. Tension is held by the idler pulley. If it is loose then the belt is worn out, the idler tensioner is defective, or both.
