Serpentine Belts

There is no need for a serpentine diagram for the 2001 xl7. Since it has two belts the only thing that you will need to remember is that on the power steering belt, the belt goes around the cranck shaft(Outer part of the cranck shaft, the alternator belt is installed prior to the power steering belt), the power steering pump and AC compressor. The flat part of the belt touches the flat part of the tensioners. Everything else is simple, the belt goes around the cranck shaft, fan and alternator.

I have a 95 thunderbird and there is one small tension pulley located closer to the passenger side of the pulley assembly. You have to go under the car and push that pulley up. Doing that will release the tension of the belt and you can pull it off. Make sure you have the diagram under your hood so you remember which way it goes back on. I replaced my belt with a Gator brand, a little more money, maybe 45 bucks but a very very good belt.

You would not normally use a belt with a single pulley. Due to the smoothness of the idler pulley and the belt tensioner pulley, the belt can slip off at any hint of moisture. Drive through a puddle, belt comes off. Gates and Goodyear both make "fix" kits to solve this problem that replace the smooth pulleys with grooved ones, and the one-side-grooved serpentine belt with one grooved on both sides. For the 3.0L engine the Gates kit is Part#38342K and the Goodyear kit is Part#49204K. I don't know what the kit numbers are for the other size engines, but have heard the 3.3L & 3.8L engines have the same problem from the same "smooth pulley" design flaw, and there are kits for them as well. Dodge refuses to recall, saying it's not a safety issue. I personally think abruptly losing your power steering on wet/icy pavement IS a safety issue, but they don't. This problem has been THE most annoying thing about my 2000 Caravan. I bought it with 100K on it, cheap at auction, and think it's otherwise a fine vehicle. Haven't had to do much other than brakes, besides this belt issue.

Make sure you take the plastic shields off the car first before getting anything done. You'll need size 10mm sockets or wrench to take them off. These will be under the right hand side of the vehicle, under the fender. The first belt should be the one that goes around the alternator and the water pump pulley. You need to loosen your two bolts that move the alternator and that should be 12mm wrench and socket will do. Also the other bolt that screws the alternator in will have to be loosen with a 14 mm wrench or socket. That will be on the bottom of the alternator. Once it loosens take off the belt and replace it with a new one and reassemble it in reverse. Use a belt tensioner to make the proper tension, if no tensioner, give it a good pull to where it's just snug tight, but not too tight. The second belt should be around the crankshaft steering pump and the air conditioning. It will need a size 12 mm and 14 mm to get job done. You'll find a bolt tensioner on the steering pump. This is the bolt that will have to be loosen until the belt comes off. When it comes off, put the new one on and retension the belt accordingly. And don't forget your plastic shield under the car, install in reverse order and happy driving!

The easiest way is to purchase an o2 socket from your locar parts store. Then you unplug the connector, put the socket on it and turn it counter clockwise to loosen it. Be sure to ask if the new one has anti-seize compound on it and if not, put some on it before installing it. That way if you ever have to do it again, it'll come out a lot easier.

My 98 Stratus has two belts, on for the power steering and the other is the alternator belt. To get access to the belt a cover over the alternator must be remove. A 10mm socket on an extension is useful. Remove the old belt loosen the mounting bolts for the alternator and loosen the tensioning bolt. This bolt is mounted on the side of the alternator, facing the front of the car. Take note of the routing and check the underside of the hood for a diagram of the routing. Slide the old belt off the idler and remove then replace the new belt on in the same fashion. Note: the Dodge Stratus has a cover under vechile covering the belt and oil pan. I found it extremly useful to remove this cove to have access to the AC compressor and CrankShaft. Don't forget to tighten the belt using the alternator adjusting screw. Good Luck!

Use a 15mm closed end wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt and rotate the tensioner arm away from the drive belt. Remove the old belt and release the tensioner slowly so that it will not snap back and ruin it.

The belt needs to be properly tensioned and aligned. It may need to be loosened or tightened, or lined up with the pulley. Worn belts should be replaced.

Occasionally belts may squeal or squeak even if properly installed. Although it is not recommended where other problems exist, there are retail sprays that can lubricate belts safely in these circumstances.

I have the same car and I let Jiffy lube do it. It only costs about $15 to learn that they had to use a little effort and it took two people with 4 hands. 2 to hold, 2 to change. You have to move it in reverse of the tension. There should be a bolt on the tension pulley. You would move it in the opposite direction of the tension. Watch were you use for leverage!

Look for a sticker by the radiatior, or under the hood.

It's spring loaded, use a wrench or socket to move it. If it's really stuck it may be seized.

Free if you do it yourself, guides on the internet will help you out if you take it to a shop you can end up spending probably around 50 dollars Canadian although some places charge a minimum 1 hour labor charge which would be around 100 dollars.
