You'll have to loosen the alternator to get the belt off, unless you have a tensioner pulley in the sequence of the serpentine. yes it removes the tension to make it easier just did it last weekend.

You don't, they have a tension pulley that does that automatically. If the belt is too loose, the pulley most likely has to be replaced.

Thecommi ::: The serpentine belt is held by tention with a automatic belt tensioner. If the serpentine belt is loose, you will most likely have to replace the entire belt tensioner assembly. the assembly comes with a new pully.

A lot of times under the hood, maybe on the underside of the hood or the radiator support there may be a belt routing diagram, to show you how to run the belt.

To relieve serpentine belt tension you need to use a Rachet arm or Breaker bar, the longer the better. (Many parts stores, such as Auto Zone will let you use their special tool made just for this purpose.) Fit the 3/8 square drive tip into a hole in the bracket which is attached to the Tension pulley. Once you insert the drive tip into the matching hole, simply turn the ratchet or breaker bar until the pulley rotates and releases the tension.

If its the 1994 XJ40 there are 2 nuts holding the tension on this system, the alternator is held in place by a threaded rod attached to the block (looking from the front its to the right of the alternator), loosen the nut on the open end of this rod and turn the inner nut until the required tension is reached and tighten the outer nut back up to secure it.

Trade it in on an American car, this way you can support the USA and not Japan.

Spray Aero Kroil on for two days in a row. You are now to loosen the allen head shoulder bolt the tensioner swings on. If your tensioner has the belt guard you will need to loosen the shaft bolt that runs through the pully to remove the guard so the belt will slide by it and allow for removal of the entire tensioner assembly. If you are removing the tensioner, be sure to note you need one o ring on both sides of the bushing, and remember to grease the bushing before reassembly.

the front of the pulley that the belt rides on will have a square hole in it. you should be able to put either a 3/8 or 1/2 inch ratchet in that hole and pull it one way or the other to take the pressure off. the size of the hole and the direction depends on the vehicle.

First, check for the serpentine belt path drawing on the firewall, which will guide you in removing and replacing the belt. If you can't see any drawing, make one yourself. If the belt has broken and you have no idea how to route the replacement belt, you can contact a Chevy or GM dealer (the GMC Safari is the same vehicle) for help. Second: This is a two-person job, unless you are unusually adept or have long arms. Using a crowbar or a breaker bar as a lever, lever against the idler pulley and reduce the tension on the idler pulley, and slip the old serpentine belt off. You can tell the idler pulley from the other pulleys as it has no accessory attached, but pivots out from its attachment to the (large) accessory mounting plate bolted to the block. Making sure the grooves are on the inside of the belt, loosely thread the new belt around the existing accessories, and using the breaker bar or crowbar, force the idler pulley back and loop the belt over it. Gently reduce the force on the idler pulley and double-check the belt positioning. I have done this three times on my own Astro, with success each time. The serpentine drive belt is the rubber belt that is connected to all the pullys 5-6 like the water pump, altenator, a/c clutch, fan, and crankshaft. usually located behind the radiator or on the side of the motor depending on what the motor is and what its in.

if your belt tensioner's spring is getting tired the belt will slacken. you either have a very very stretched out belt (unlikely) or your belt tensioner needs replacing. I recommend that you replace the belt at the same time anyway.

Check to see if there was some debris on mating surface,make sure it is clean and tighten the bolts evenly.Also there is a inspection plate there for your torque converter,make sure it is not falling down and jamming between the starter.

first you must loosen a 12mm bolt behind the pulley of the ac compressor, its a little tough to get to, but you can get it with an extended wrench, then loosen up the ac compressor bolt, pry it forward if it doesnt do it automatically, take your timing belt off, then go to your alternator bolt unerneath the alternator, loosen it rock it forward and pull off your belt, obviously reverse everything you just did to put it back together P.S. you can pretty much rebuild the geo storm engine with a 12mm wrench, lol

They are kind of tricky to route. Look in the owners manual as there is a diagram in there I believe. If you don't have an owners manula, contact a Lexus dealer and they will order you a new one for free. They will also provide you with a complete printout of all dealer service done on this vehicle done at any Lexus dealership. a 92 Silverado 350 uses a single serpentine belt that is tensioned by a spring loaded idler pully. When facing the engine from the front of the vehicle, the tensioner is near the top of the engine slightly left of center. Using a breaker-bar and socket, remove tension from the idler pully and simultaneously slide the serpentine belt off one of the other pulleys. I usually pick the alternator pully since it's so close. Note the path of the old belt and make certain that the new belt is installed along the identical path. Put the belt on all pullies, including the idler pully and hold it with slight tension near the alternator pully, then turn the idler pully again and slide the belt over the alternator and release pressure from the idler pully. Visually inspect the path of the entire belt to make certain that it is properly installed before starting the engine. Don't let anyone stand to the side of the engine when starting it for the first time, since a mis-installed pully can be ripped apart quickly and relatively large pieces of reinforced rubber can really hurt when they hit you.

The tension pulley that is on it has no grooves, it is a engineering mistake that never was recalled or improved; there was an aftermarket one that had grooves on it, more expensive and probably more difficult to get the belt on. I am going through the same problem on a Chrysler 3.0. Try using some belt dressing on the inside of the belt. I heard that the Goodyear Gator Belt is the best serpentine belt, though I have not tried it.

Take off the belt. If its a serpantine belt,you'll have to loosen it using a tentioner, if its a two part belt, just start removing your bolts that hold the alternator in place. If your not use to working on vehicles, tag your bolts with tape in order to remember what slots they go in. Good luck with your project.

I can't say that water is your problem, I have never heard of water doing this. I would start by checking to see if your tension-er is creating enough tension. It is possible to put an oversize belt on a vehicle which would cause the belt to be loose.Poor pulley alignment is another possibility. Good luck! R.K.
