Air Filters and Intake Manifolds

Air filters are devices that remove solid particles such as dust, mold, and bacteria from the air. Used in building ventilation systems and engines, they contain an intake manifold that is primarily tasked to optimize the system/engine’s performance and efficiency.

What is the Purpose of a manifold in a car?

An exhaust manifold or header collects the exhaust gases from multiple cylinders into one pipe. Usually constructed of cast iron, it conducts the exhaust gases from the combustion chambers to the exhaust pipe. It has smooth curves in it for improving the flow of exhaust. The exhaust manifold is bolted to the cylinder head, and has entrances for the air that is injected into it. It is usually located below the intake manifold. A header is a different type of manifold; it is made of separate equal-length tubes.

There is also an intake manifold which directs fresh air, after it passes through the air filter and carburetor or throttle body, to the various combustion chambers (piston cylinders).

And it should also be noted that, on some fuel-injected engines, what is often referred to as the fuel-rail, is also a manifold. It's purpose, of course, being the distribution of fuel to each injector.

Does a 2010 Ford Escape have a cabin air filter and where is it?

Most of the time it's not installed, but you can buy one for about $20 and put it in yourself (OE part number 19N619). The filter will go just under the plastic cover at the base of the windshield (cowl) on the passenger side.

Installation Instructions:

1. Raise hood.

2. Remove the 7 plastic clips that run along the forward edge of the cowl. Use a Phillips head screwdriver and push up in the middle from the bottom. Remove the screw and the clip.

3. Pry up the forward edge of the plastic cowl piece on the passenger side. Mine was stuck down with a sticky foam strip which remained attached to the plastic cowl piece. This is where my wife assisted by holding the cowl piece up out of the way so I could raise the lid to the air box.

4. The lid to the air box has some plastic clips on the edge holding it in place. Gently pry the tab forward while lifting the top. I did not remove the lid, just lifted it up enough to get the filter in place inside the air box.

5. Install the air filter in place, since it is such a funny shape it will only go in one way which is obvious. As stated here and other places I researched, the filter does not fit perfectly. It is the right shape it just seems to be a little too big. I had to push the edges down into place in order to get a decent seal which slightly distorted the filter. It should work fine though.

The video is from a different year Escape and the filter is a little different, but location is the same.

How do you change the air filter on a 2003 Honda Element?

Air Filter and Cabin FilterAir filter compartment is the biggest black plastic box under the hood. You have to remove four Philips screws pull the cover off and take out the filter.

Don't forget to change your cabin air filter (it is a neat feature) This one is located behind the glove compartment.

How do i know my rotors are warped?

How do you remove an exhaust manifold?

You just unbolt it. You first have to disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold then remove whatever you have to allow you to access the bolts and remove the manifold. It varies greatly from engine to engine. Some are easy and some are very hard.

How do you remove the intake manifold on a Windstar 3.8?

The intake manifold is made up of 2 parts, not surprisingly the Upper Intake Manifold (UIM) and Lower Intake Manifold (LIM).

The UIM is quite easy to access, with only a couple of components to disconnect in order to remove it. This is also where the bulk of the 'common' work takes place - cleaning egr ports, most of the induction system cleaning, and a very critical repair for the Windstar: failed isolator bolts.

The "Related Questions" below cover the UIM in great detail - with links to in-depth procedures on removal, cleaning & maintenance.

Not a comprehensive response, but enough to get the conversation started on Windstar 3.8 intake manifolds...

What are the torque specs for the intake manifold on a 3800 V6?

According to All Data the Lower Intake Manifold to Cylinder Head Bolts are Torqued to 11 Ft Lbs. Use thread lock compound "lock Tight" on the bolts to ensure they remain tight. On the Upper Pleneum bolts Apply thread lock to the bolts and torque to 89 In Lbs. Foot Pounds on the Lower and Inch Pounds on the Upper. Always use a tap or thread chaser on all bolt passages and bolt threads before attempting re installation. There is a torque sequence to follow on the upper and lower, be sure you get that to install the intakes evenly. Also it is best to tighten the fasteners in 2 or 3 steps to ensure an even installation.

How do you change intake manifold on 1968 Chrysler Newport 383?

It unbolts fairly simply. There are no coolant passages like a small-block. It does have an exhaust gas passage in the center to bring hot air under the carbureuter for anti-icing and faster warmup. Be sure to blow away any dirt around the sides against the block before removing. The intake gasket is a single piece of large sheet-metal called the "valley pan" that sits under the intake manifold and includes the gasket. You might be able to leave it in place and re-use. I never tried since always removing the heads. You would have to insure no dirt gets between the gaskets and the heads and that the exhaust openings are cleaned. If you remove it, steel bars clamp it to the front and rear of the block. A new valley pan usually comes with installation instructions. I recally using RTV along the edges and a little high-temp (red) RTV around the exhaust holes, but there might have been a tube of sealant in the box. Once I tried adding a special gasket with screens that claimed to breakup fuel drops for better mileage (J.C. Whitney). The extra thickness made it hard to get the bolts aligned. This is also a problem if you mill the heads. In a worse case, you might have to mill the intake manifold to match so the ports still align.

Is there a water jacket in the intake manifold of a Toyota Tacoma?

No there is not a water jacket in an intake manifold they are around the cylinder walls in the engine block.

Can an auto filter be used on a lawn tractor?

If you mean a fuel filter then no. These filters require certain amount of psi to "push" the fuel trough it. Go get a fuel filter for a 3/8 or 1/4 or whatever fuel line it is and cut the line and put it in using some worm clamps. I have even seen these at Walmart even. Usually only a couple of bucks. Good luck.

BMW 325i cabin filter where located?

It is located under the hood on the firewall. If you open the hood and look just below the windshield you will see a black plastic cover with 3 fasteners. Turn the three fasteners and they will pop up pull off the cover and remove the filter replace and reinstall the cover.

Why would a 1998 Ford F-150 leak antifreeze at the rear end of the intake manifold?

It's probably leaking from a bad intake manifold gasket.

You could be leaking from the heater hose that comes out of the firewall very close to the manifold. They sometimes leak there and drip down on the manifold. If it drips on a coil, it can eventually ruin the coil. It happened to me.

What should be checked first on my recently purchased second hand 1999 park avenue base model when I get poor mileage about 12 mpg after I checked the air filter brakes tire pressure?

You probably need a tune up. New plugs, plug wires, and possibly vacuum lines leaking. Also add a can of Seafoam or Techron fuel injector cleaner to a full tank of gas. I would also replace the fuel filter. A partially clogged fuel filter will cause a fuel pump to work harder and fail prematurely.

AnswerWinter can also reak havoc on your gas mileage, espically when you have a driver information center telling your MPG. Driving in snow puts more strain on the car, as does starting it to warm it up (car running burning gas but not going anywhere = lower average MPG displayed on the driver info center)

Why should you have to replace your exhaust manifold gasket?

You have to replace the gasket because when you take the manifold off it brakes the seel and air will be sucked into the manifold and your vehicle will hardly run, and you wont be able to drive it You have to replace the gasket because when you take the manifold off it brakes the seel and air will be sucked into the manifold and your vehicle will hardly run, and you wont be able to drive it
