Brake Pads and Rotors

The brake pads and rotors are important parts of a vehicle’s braking system. When an automobile brakes, the brake clamps on the rotor to slow the speed of the vehicle.

It depends on the brand of brake pad and your driving habits. Normally, you'll get somewhere between 30,000 - 50,000 miles from a set of pads.

Why is it taking so long to stop when braking even though the fluid levels and supposedly the brake pads are fine?

Could be the master cylinder, booster, or the brake cylinders. If the pistons in the wheel cylinders are jammed up, you don't have any braking on that wheel at all. Does the pedal stay steady when you hold the brake down? If not, it could be a leaking master cylinder. With power brakes, if the booster isn't working it takes a lot more pedal force to apply brakes than you expect, which would also lead to long braking distances. Another thing to look for is the brake pads/shoes or rotors/drums have not glazed over. The effectiveness of the braking action will be greatly diminished with either surface being glazed - rough up the pad surface, or have the rotors lightly turned. On a similar thought, if the pads / shoes have become contaminated with grease, oils or similar, they'll need to be replaced.

How do compress rear brake caliper pistons on Honda Accord 2010?

You need a big towel you won't mind losing, lots of shop rags and brake parts cleaner, a garbage bag, a long zip tie, and a small - 3" will do it - C-clamp...in addition to the normal screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, etc. First, pop the hood, jack up the back of the car, support it on jackstands, and remove both wheels. Then remove the brake pads.

Now for the fun part. Go into the engine compartment. Wrap the towel around the bottom of your master cylinder, then put the bag around the towel. Remove the brake fluid cap, then wrap the bag around the whole thing and zip-tie it to the master cylinder. (You'll understand why in a second.)

Go back to the wheel and use the C-clamp to compress the rear brake caliper pistons. Do all the brake work you were going to on the back of your car.

The reason you did all the stuff with the towel and bag, is every time you compress the brake caliper pistons brake fluid will squirt out of the master cylinder. Since it dissolves paint you don't want it flying all over the place. So...now you can open the bag, carefully remove it, and use brake cleaner on rags to clean off the master cylinder and reservoir.

Why would your vehicle pull to one side when braking even though it stops ok?

It might have a caliper sticking, or worn brake pads. This can also be caused by bad ball joints. If that doesn't help, you may need an alignment. Check to see if it pulls when driving also. It won't pull as hard as when you stop, but if it does the alignment is off. Low tire pressure on the suspect side can cause the car to pull under braking. Possible contamination.

How do you know when the brakes need to be replaced on a 1999 Toyota Camry and how much should the job cost for both the front and back pads and rotors?

When the linings are about 1/32" or so. The cost of replacing a part is a very general question that unless specified exactly is hard to answer. First, is who is replacing the part? Is the Dealer, an independent repair shop, a junkyard, the guy next door or you doing the replacement. These will all yield different prices. Not to mention that within all of these will be different labor rates and different part price mark ups. Second, what is the quality of the part? Is it a name brand, generic (white box, economy), OEM or used part? All of these will be different. Price will even differ between name brands, sometimes significantly. Thirdly, What is the warranty of the part and who is offering the warranty (the shop the parts house or the manufacturer). Limited Lifetime will have restrictions. Lifetime warranty isn

Where do you put the transmission fluid for a 2001 VW Jetta?

It depends on if it is a manual or automatic transmission. For the manual transmission, there is a 17mm Allen plug in the side of it. Crawl under car and take the plug out. You can buy a fluid pump for about $20 at an autoparts store and the 17mm Allen wrench is about $10 at sears. It is pretty easy on the manual transmission, hardest part for me was finding the 17mm Allen wrench.

Automatic transmission?? you cannot put the transmission fluid in by yourself you have to take it either to a V.W. dealer or someone who services these types of transmissions the fluid has to be pumped inif you notice there is no dipstick to check the fluid level that's because they use this probe the stick into your transmission to see how much fluid you have the probe costs about $1500 dollars expensiove yes keep in mind it will cost about $20 a quart the reason why I know this is because I am having problems with my transmission in my 2001 jetta if you have any more questions let me know. tunthakit@comcast.net

It usually pops off but if it's frozen, look for two extra threaded holes on the rotor. Get two high grade bolts that fit the holes (8mm fine?) and use them like a gear puller. You can get the bolts at any Sears Hardware store.

How do you remove a rear brake drum from a 1991 tempo?

when ford assembled the car they put the drum on and then put a crimp at the edge of all the lug bolts. take a wire brush and clean around the lugs right at the drum and you will see where the threads are pinched, by doing this the miss shaped metal holds the drum tight on the axle, use a grinder or a file to remove the burrs and the drum can be removed with a mall, be careful not to damage the lugs to much when doing this.

How do you change the brake pads of a 2002 Volvo s60 Is it normal to have loose brake pedal after getting your brakes changed?

Well, I am far from a mechanic, but I had some break trouble a while back. I even ended up in a wreck because of it. What happened is the break lines had a clog in them. It s very very extremely important to bleed your breaks very very very well after changing them. You should take it back and have them bleed the breaks again. There is a right way and a wrong way to do it also. Be very careful. You really need good breaks. They are extremely important!

Your rotor has groovs grinded into it only on th left side should you just change the 1 rotoe and all pads?

You may not have to change the rotor. If the groves are not very bad and the rotor has never been turned before, you may be able to just have it turned. Remove both rotors and take them to a machine shop that turns rotors. They will tell you if one or both needs replacing, or they can be turned. Install new pads for sure.
