Brake Pads and Rotors

well, if your pads are worn down, then replace them. Most brakes will start squeaking when turnnig corner and then start all the time, its that way so you know its time to change the pads. If the rotor looks wavey, not flat then the rotor needs work. If you take it to a autoshop that does brakes they can tell you how bad they are, if its not too bad then they can "turn" your rotors, or smooth them out, which is cheaper then replacing them, but if its too bad they will have to be replaced. The longer you drive on worn pads, the more damage can be done to the rotors, If you get to the point where when you step on the brakes and you hear a grinding noise, they both will need to be replaced, but if it gets that bad you may want to take it into a shop to make sure they isn't any other damage to the brake. Also if the worn out pads aren't flat or if the brake pad, not the steel backing is thick in some spots and almost gone in other spot the alinment of the brake pad may be off when you step on the brake, wearing out your breakpads earlier then they should, you might want to get it fixed as well.

I would suggest you look in either a Chilton or Haynes manual for the proper steps to take to replace your car's rear brakes. There you will find instructions as well as illustrations that will help to get a proper job.

To change the disc brake pads on a 2003 F250 you will first need to remove the wheel and tire. There are 2 caliper bolts behind the caliper which need to be removed. Then use a special tool or C-Clamp to push in the caliper pistons and replace the disc brake pads.

Your problem is a warped rotor. You will need to remove the rotors and have them trued at a machine shop or replaced if they are worn too thin. It can also be a problem with your ABS system, a bad wheel bearing, or loose lug nuts. Be sure to tighten the lug nuts to the correct torque or you can warp a brand new rotor almost instantly.

Take off the calipers. If there are screws holding the rotor, remove them. If the screws are stuck, be careful when you use the screwdriver. You might round out the screw. If stuck, use a 1/4" socket wrench, 1/4" socket and a screwdriver bit. The screwdriver bit will fit inside the 1/4" socket. This will give you extra torque when removing the screw. The rotor should come right off.

Follow the below steps to replace the front brake pads on your Saturn:

1) Remove the cap from the master cylinder and check the fluid level; draw off some fluid, if the fluid is at the maximum level. Raise the vehicle's front end on jack stands and remove both front wheels.

2) Compress the caliper piston into its bore with a C-clamp. Watch out for fluid overflowing from the master cylinder. Wash off the brake assembly with brake cleaner.

3) Pry off the anti-rattle clip from the caliper with a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the covers to the guide pin bolts and remove the bolts; this should take a hex wrench. Remove the caliper and hang it from the coil spring with strong wire; don't hang it by the brake hose.

4) Remove the inner brake pad from within the caliper piston and the outer pad from the caliper's mounting bracket. Insert the new inner brake pad into the piston by squeezing the clip on the backing plate, and install the new outer pad into the bracket.

5) Position the caliper back onto the mounting bracket. Clean off the guide pin bolts with the brake cleaner, and lightly apply a high-temperature brake grease to them before installing them and replacing their covers. Put the anti-rattle clip in place.

5) Connect the wheels and lower the vehicle once you've changed the brakes on both sides. Press the brake pedal multiple times to seat the pads and check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder.

Replacing pads on the 94 is pretty simple. First loosen lug nuts on one wheel. Jack van up on side you loosened lugs on Finish removing lug nuts and wheel Put jack stand under vehicle in case jack falls.

Now, Remove the brake caliper by loosing the two nuts on the back side of the caliper. Mine were 1/2" head. Get somethign to set the caliper on to take tension off the hose and Slip the caliper off. Sometimes you have to tap it with hammer if rotor is worn in grooves. There is a spring clip you can undo just above where caliper sits ti helo make pads more free. Remove front brake pad by slipping in out forwards. I then usually remove the rotor which just pulls off to get to back pad becasue its hard to get off with rotor on. Rotor on this vehicle isn't part of studs jsut tap it in back to get it off. Slide back pad out forward. Take C clamp and push caliper piston back into cylinder. Put back pad on Put on rotot Put on front pad Clip spring back down Slide on caliper and put screws back in. Put wheel on and repeat for other side.
