Car Stalling Problems

When your car’s engine stops when it’s in idle or is accelerating, then your car has stalled. Almost all stalling problems stem from poor fuel-gas mixture, out-of-tune fuel injection or fuel contaminants.

What are symptoms of a bad power brake booster?

hard brake pedal is the most obvious sign only way i know to test a booster, is to turn engine off. use brakes several times till pedal is hard. then with brake applied, start engine. the brake pedal should then soften.if the pedal stays hard the booster is bad

Could it be a tcc solenoid or a fuel system problem if your 1995 Chevy Corsica stalls when it is hot outside but start again after about 30 minutes?

Can a TCC solenoid cause death when warm Yes it very well could be the TCC solenoid. I have exactly the same issue on my Beretta 2.0. Interestingly enough a transmission shop owner says he has fixed %90 of these with a bottle of $10 additive and a GM guy says that is impossible. Knowing my Beretta it is way possible and worth trying. Further interesting is the school is out on just "unplugging it". The purpose of the solenoid is to disengage the transmission when you slow down. (like putting your foot on the clutch peddle of a manual transmission car.. if you don't it dies). A thousand hits say just unplug it and lose a mile or two per gallon. The other thousand say the transmission will overheat and fail. No matter what, the agreement is to un-plug it, see if the problem goes away. If unplugging it does fix the issue the solenoid should be replaced and is not too expensive ($150 for the job) OR not out of the capability of the do-it yourselfer. A ton of GM cars suffer from this ailment. Another note from my search, the transmission tends to shift unevenly. Soft shifting, late shifting, hard shifting.. (describes mine to a tee)

EDIT: Most of the problems i am seeing on this site are Catalytic Converter issues. 99% sure this is your problem also.

Why would a 1990 Buick Riviera stall during idle or at low acceleration?

I just purchased a 1990 Buick Riviera with 45,000 on it for my daughter. However, I did have a brief period that you discribed with the car stalling out. I don't know if this will help, but I just read at another site, that it may have a faulty idle air control.

What to do if bad gas was put in car?

get it all out empty the fuel tank put good gas in the tank and crank it until it starts

Where do you find free assistance to repair your car when you're out of cash?

You can join a auto mechanic class if there's one offered near your home. Usually these courses are offered at adult schools, vocational schools, etc... There is a small fee to join the class but you'll save a lot of money by doing the labor yourself and with the help of your classmates. You can google this.

How can you get bad gas out of your car?

Add 1 bottle of ordinary rubbing alcohol to the tank. If The Bad gas is just gas that has water in it, then the alcohol will allow the water to "burn" with the gas.

== == The best way to do it is kind of a pain. Take the tank off and dump the bad gas out. While the tanks off would be a good time to flush it out too. You can use a ordinary garden hose and siphone the gas out of the tank.

Why will a 1977 ford f-250 start but not run when key is released new ingition disabled antitheft still won't stay running?

Try thisJust a thought but on the 77 there should be a starter solenoid on the passenger side fender and the power wire for the coil is attached to one of the small terminals, it should be on the side closest to the battery i think. The other side only supplies power when engaging the starter and that might be why it only runs when the starter is going. It could also be bad and not supplying power to the coil when needed you can test this by using a jumper wire to connect it to the hot side of the solenoid and starting the truck ( that's also how you hotwire one of those old ones).

Why would an engine seem to almost stall when put in reverse but idle fine in park engine is 94 351 windsor?

Why would it stall or almost stall in Reverse but not in Drive? How long since it's received a tune-up and thorough check-up? How is the compression?

If your car started stalling shortly after the AC stopped working and is still stalling after the throttle body was cleaned and ignition coil replaced could the AC problem have something to do with it?

The ac could be causing the problem. Turn the ac off, and watch the compressor clutch to see if it is not engaged. If it is then the compressor or clutch could be bogging the engine down.

What would cause a 2006 Ford Taurus to overheat?

The Taurus could overheat for several reasons. The coolant could be low, the fan might not be operating properly, or the engine could have a stuck thermostat.

Why did my Mitsubishi galant stop running while in drive?

I would suggest that your timing belt broke - just like mine did Saturday, May 23, 09. I pulled over and a mechanic friend helped me check it out. Do not turn the engine over and over and over (too late?). These are probably "interference" engines and you may bend/break your valves or bust a piston which equals an expensive repair (like mine). Take it to a mechanic first. My repair, at $45.00/hr will cost around $200-$300 to fix. That's cheap!! if bent valve - closer to $1000.00 to repair. God Bless you & your car.

What would cause a car to completely shut off while driving down the highway if it has had the fuel pump and catalytic converter replaced?

I had a Toyota Camry (1985) that was always doing this. Taking it in to the the shop never resolved anything. While visiting family in Illinois, I got to talking about my problem of the stalling while I was running fine on the highway and my Brother (who worked for Dodge) asked me if I ever topped off the fuel. The answer was "yes" I used to overfill to get as much gas in there as possible. He told me that there is a vacumn near the mouth of the fuel tank and when you put too much gas in the tank you are interrupting the vacumn. I stopped doing that and never had a problem with it cutting off again. I had my faithful little Camry for 18 years and NEVER had to put any money into it except for regular maintenance. Why do cars shake when in park or stopped at a traffic light?

The energy being released in the engine is not transferred to the outside; it manifests as vibration, which is transferred to the rest of the vehicle, hence the shaking of the car.

Why would a 1989 Dodge Dakota only run for seven minutes then shut off and not start again for over an hour or not at all?

Engine Runs, but then Dies

Without being able to do a "hands on" troubleshooting of your vehicle, NO ONE on here can tell you precisely what is causing the problem, and as I'm not famalier with your vehicle, this answer will of necessity be generic in nature.

The symptoms you describe bring to mind one of two possible causes:

1. There is a partial blockage somewere within the fuel supply system, anywhere from the fuel tank all the way to the engine. Being only a partial blockage, it allows enough fuel to get through for a while, but eventually looses the volume battle, and the engine becomes "starved"for fuel and dies.

2. Another possibility is that there is a defect in the ignition system which is related to the temperature [in electronics sometimes referred to as a "thermal intermittent"] of an electronic part [sensor, computer, resistor, capacitor, integrated circuit module, relay, etc., etc.] which works OK until it comes up to operating temperature, and then "opens up," or internally "shorts," resulting in failure of the ignition system. Thermal intermittents are always related to the temperature of the defective component and thus recurr when the conditions are the same as before, and usually "go away" after cooldown. As time goes on, the defect may become worse so that the system will not work at all, even if cool. By the way, thermal intermittents are not limited to overheating, and can be caused by cold conditions also.

As you describe starting [implying "cold," I suspect your problem may be related to increased temperature, if not from item 1, fuel system.

Although I don't know your vehicle, for but one example [not necessarily related in your case], in the "old days," some ignition coils would fail in this manner. However, I don't recommend spending good money replacing an igniton coil, or coils, without a full diagnosis and confirmation of the defective component.

The "proper" fix of your problem is for a qualifiedautomotive technician to:

  • fully troubleshoot your vehicle in relation to the symptoms,
  • find and identify the defective part or parts,
  • and properly repair the defect(s).

At idle my 1989 Chevrolet Camero runs rough and dies what could cause the problem?

If you have a check engine light "on" then you need to have it scanned for codes. It could be numerous reasons such as a vacuum leak, loss of fuel pressure, flooding, and the beat goes on.

What causes a 1992 Buick Park Ave to stall?

this problem can be caused by several things.clogged fuel filter..faulty parts in fuel delivery..vacuum leak(including intake manifold leak)..idle air control..idle control..and so on..but 9 out of ten times on this car it is an oxygen sensor... if its stalling when you let off the gas or at an idle... check your codes on diagnostic..this can be done with a paper clip.(not a coated paper clip but a metal one)..following answer tells you how

Answerfind your diganostic port..on this car it should be under the dash to the left of your steering wheel but ..to the right side of your fuse box.they are usually facing downward on this car.unwind the paper clip into two pointy ends...hold the paper clip to the first two metal prongs on the far right (toward passenger side) of the port and turn key on.(do not start engine just put key in on position)..your check engine light should flash a twelve code (this is just to let you know its accessed basically) three times...flash once pause..flash twice...after it does it three times ..it will flash the code for whatever it has stored..it will flash any codes three times as well.if it goes back to the twelve code then it has flashed all codes stored..it will more than likely be a code 13 ..one flash..pause three flashes..if so..then you have an open circuit on your oxygen sensor.check the connection..if its ok then...replace the oxygen sensor..it is on the exhaust manifold in the rear of the engine..best way to get it out is to let car cooldown..then soak it with wd 40 or comparable lubricant and let set for about twenty minutes...but make sure the car is cool..because wd and other lubricants are flammable...after you've replaced the oxygen sensor..make sure your key is off and disconnect the battery for around thirty seconds and it will clear your codes on your computer....then start the car with hood up and let it run until the lubricant burns off...it will smoke ..don't be alarmed its the lube burning off...just watch and make sure it doesnt go to flame...very unlikely if it has had sufficiant time to evaporate..it will not go to flame ...just smoke off...and i know this is common sense ..but ..id rather make sure..because ive seen people spray the lube on while the car was hot and well....lets just say they have lost some facial hair ...shaking my head...

Why does an 94 Chevy truck shut off while you are driving down the road will not restart after it dies?

It is called vaporlock. try replacing your gas cap.It has a small venthole in the middle of cap and after a while it gets plugged with particles. Try this test pull off gas cap and drive a little distance if it doesnt stall out then theres your problem. (vaporlock) when your motor is drawing fuel from your fuel tank it also draws air through gas cap. and if vent in cap is plugged it will draw all the air out of fuel tank by sucking the tank inward until the fuel pump cant pull any more fuel from tank because of pressure) so if you let motor sit for a minute without running air in tank will replenish and vehicle will start up like nothing ever happened.if this is your problem after you test it replace fuel cap. Good luck. 0
