What if your car makes a clicking sound when you try to crank it?
If your car makes a clicking sound when you try to start it, try to jump the battery. If that starts it, check the electrical system and if it was the battery, replace the battery. If jumping it does not fix it, have a mechanic look at it.
Car will not start is it the starter or electrical?
if the motor cranks when you turn the key it is not the starter because in order for the engine to crank the starter must be turning the motor. it could be electrical or fuel related or sensor related, ect. depending on the model and year you could check for fault codes ie:OBD 1 or OBD 2
Why does my 2001 impala flash security and car not start?
This is usually caused by a faulty passlock sensor requiring replacement of the ignition lock cylinder. To test:
Crank the engine momentarily (like you're trying to start it) then allow the key to return to the on/run position. Your check engine light should be on, and the radio should work, but turn the radio off if it's on, because you need to keep the battery charged.
Wait fifteen to seventeen minutes, then shut the key off and remove it. Then wait fifteen seconds (or longer) and start the engine. If it starts, you need a new lock cylinder. With the engine still running, press the key straight in. If the car stalls, you need an ignition switch also.
Can a bad ignition switch keep the starter engaged?
Probably not a bad ignition switch, but more likely a bad starter solenoid. It takes a lot of current to get a starter to turn, to much to go through such a small switch like the ignition switch. The ignition switch actually controls a relay(solenoid) which can handle the needed current to get the starter going. On a lot of modern cars the solenoid is built into the starter unlike older cars and trucks where it was mounted on the firewall between the battery and the starter.
Where is the starter on a 1998 Chevy Lumina?
You don't. Starter fluid is a really good way to damage the motor inside because it created far more pressure than the motor is designed for. It's best to find and fix the problem rather than use the fluid. You would put starter fluid in the gas tank.
What would cause a 2002 Alero not to start not even a clicking sound when turning on the key?
First thing that I would do is check the battery. The clicking sound is the selenoid on the starter. Usually that means the starter is bad. Isn't very hard to replace. Hope this helped.
Why won't 93 Buick Century will not start it turns over but spits and sputters and won't start?
The fuel pump relay is designed to initially give enough gas to start the engine as well as provided gas for runnining the engine. Sometimes the relay does not respond when the motor turns. In rare cases the Map Sensor may be faulty. The Map sensor is designed to detect the engine es turning and gas is needed to keep the engine running. If you remove the conncector for the map sensor the engine will start; given: you have power to the ignition coil which in turn sends power to your spark plugs and the timing is set. The map sensor is located above the power steering pump attached to the firewall and has a hose and a conncector attached to it. kind of flat and mounted upright. F. Garay

take it to your local ford dealer and have them replace the cam sensor for free. There is a current safety recall on this item. if you have already replaced the sensor, you can have a new FORD part installed and request a refund if you can provide a receipt for the one you put in. you need to replace the cam positioning sensor. thses cost about 50 bucks from auto zone, double that from ford. the snsor is located above harmonic balance on front of engine block. to replace, get under truck, remove attaching bolt, unplug wire harness, pull sensor out. install new sensor, replace wire harness reinstall bolt. not much to it, just a little difficult to get at
How come your F150 will not start it only clicks when you turn the key?
Caution! Disconnect battery cables before making any repairs. A short circuit can cause serious burns, fire and/or explosion. Many parts stores will help with tests. 1. Test the battery to make sure it is not discharged or worn out.
2. Check the condition of battery cables and connections. Clean or replace as needed. Don't over tighten side post connections. This can strip the threads, break seals.
Quick check: headlights should not go out when you turn the key to start. 3. Check the solenoid on the starter. If it is not on the starter follow the positive cable from the battery to the other end this end is connected to the solenoid. Sometimes it is on the side wall. Make sure all connections are clean and tight.
4. If all the above check out good the starter motor may be bad. Many parts stores will test it free if you remove it and take it in.
How do you replace starter on a 1998 Dodge Durango 4x4?
Take the neg battery cable off. Then the wires off of the starter then the bolts that hold it on. Then sometimes you have to remove th exhaust manifold to get it out.
you don't have to remove manifold just the 3 bolts holding the pipe to the manifold then cut the 2 bolts off the flanged conn. next to the flex loint ( this is from a 99 4x4 hope its the same ) manifold pipe bolts are self locking and very tight you have to glow (torches) them always remember fire bad should be done by someone experienced. cut the rear weld nuts off the flange. if you complete this and don't burn the truck up you need to check the flange at manifold make sure it good and clean joining surfaces at rear flange buy new nuts for manifold and new nuts and washers for rear flange i reused old gaskets they were fine

Why would a vehicle not start right away and only turn over on the second try?
some of the reasons for that may be that after a while the timing belt streches and the static timing start getting a little bit off.simply have your static timing(ignition timing) corrected and it should help that anoying problem go away. if done correctly the vehicle will start as soon as you turn that key.
How is it that my engine cranks but will not turn over on my 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII?
If it turns over but just doesn't start, it may be the CRANK POSITION SENSOR located next to the air conditioning compressor. Sometimes you just have to disconnect the electrical connection and re-connect and it may just work then you know that was your problem. It could be the FUEL PUMP also but sometimes they act up some before going out so there is some warning.

When you put your car in reverse it cuts off?
This was a common problem on mid to late 80s' GM cars...The torque converter lock up clutch does not disengage and when you put the gearselector into drive the Torque converter clutch stops the motor.
The test for this problem is to put the drive wheels up in the air-put the car in gear and see if the motor kills. If not then the Torque converter clutch is stuck.. The simplest repair is to unplug the Torque converter plug on the outside of the transmission then the Torque converter clutch will usually disengage.
If you could tell me what make/model/year and motor that you have i can be more specific.
Hope that helps..
Good luck.

Why wont your Infiniti Q45 turn over?
Mine was the starter on 1996 I30. I downloaded the schematic diagrams for the electrical system. I took out fuse #17 (10 Amp) which basically shut down the anti-theft (start) and it still didn't start. After checking that fuse #33 (7.5 Amp) was good, I replaced the starter and it's working fine. The only other thing it could be is the inhibitor switch (Park or Neutral switch) so try both positions and if it doesn't start in either Park or Neutral, it's probably the starter unless you have a stick instead of an automatic. In stick shifts, there is another switch linked to the clutch...that can stop it from starting.
Why does your car make a grinding noise when you try to start it?
It been my experience that a loud noise when stating a car, grinding may mean the starter is not in right or on it's way out as in replacement.
It's quite likely that one of the mounting bolts that attach the starter to the engine has broken and the remaining bolt(s) are bent, as a result. The bolts should all be replaced ASAP. This is not an expensive repair.
