Car Starting Problems

I think that has coil packs. Them good? Under them is the ECM. I changed one at 240,000 miles on my 91. Junk yard had it for 20 bucks. I just replied to someone on here about how to change it. Its not the easiest, its on the back of the motor at the base of the spark plug wires. But 1.5 hrs later I got it.

Any scanner with an OBDII hook-up will work on this vehicle. If you can turn the key over and the dash lights up and you have power it will read fault codes.

Either the neutral lockout switch, an electrical connection or the keyswitch. If it's a stickshift it could be the clutch pedal lockout switch.

The internal resistance of electrical components can increase with temperature when they become defective or begin to malfunction. More than likely the temperature under the hood rises to the point where one of the many electrical devices fails as it warms. The easiest way to solve this problem is sadly to take it to the dealer and simply plug it in to identify which component is not working. In the long run it will be less expensive.

Look at the rear lower end of the engine

The size of the engine does not matter. If one car has the CCAs or cold cranking amps to start your car it will and chances are it has more than enough

If the Car didn't start with the key turning the ignition then the car was "hotwired" to turn the Car on.


If the key did not start the car, how was it started.

This usually means that your starter is bad. Check your ground connections, and make sure they are free of rust .Another good place to check would be your cars selenoid.

Its a huge possibility your starter is out.

Defective alternator.

yes but the car will only last as long as the life of the battery stay connected with jump vehicle as long as possible 10 to 15 minutes. to give your battery as much "juice" as possible try not to drive too far or on main roads your battery wont last long. prolong the life of the battery by using few or none of your acc. as possible, no radio no lights no heater/a/c. nothing if you can help it and it should last ten to fifteen minutes depending on the size of your battery. to test the alt. with car running diconnect the negative cable from your battery, if car cuts off the alt. is not pushing currant, if car stays running the alt. is working fine. hope this helps.

Yes. I purchased one from the local NAPA store & it was defective. Luckily, I saved the old computer. The problem with the car was a bad coil. Oil from the body had leaked up into the terminal tower where the coil wire attaches. The conversion kit available is not a good alternative for this car because of the electronic feedback carb. As a result, with only 62,500 miles, I reluctantly traded my '85 in on the "Cash for Clunkers".

I'm not sure how simmilar the problem I had is to this one but i hope this helps: My 1998 GMC Jimmy would not release the key from the ignition, and it would sometimes stick in park... The soultion i found is that there is a bunch of (about 4) wires conected to the "shifting column" underneath the boot (near the top left of the boot and about 3 inches down) our problem was caused by having the wires in that connector come loose. the solution was to push the wires back into the connecting peice.

Appearantly GMC didn't think twice about putting fragile electrical components near moving parts...I don't know how similar the 1998 is to the 2000 model but i still hope this helps.

The starter is located on the right hand side of your GM 3.4 liter engine. You can follow the positive battery cable directly to the starter.

check the timing

Might be the timing belt broke,remove cap and see if rotor spins.

line up timing mark and see if rotor points to #1 plug wire on cap.

There could be a few reasons why a 1990 Chrysler Lebaron will crank but not start. The fuel pump could be out or the car could be out of gas. There may be a malfunction in the ignition system causing no spark.

if you have a "chipped " key, the security system is not recognizing the signal. Have you tried a spare key.?

Yo should be able to hear the pump motor with your ear to the fuel tank filler hole while a helper turns the key on. If you don't hear it, then have him crank the motor. Get a wiring diagram (good luck, online anyway) or probe the wires at the pump and verify +12 volts and - ground are available at the fuel pump connector with key in "Run" or "Start". Check for clogged fuel filter (with the filter removed from the vehicle, you should be able to blow air (with your mouth, not from an air hose) through it with little resistance). Check fuel pressure at the fuel rail with pressure tester.

Also check for spark by unplugging a spark plug wire from the plug and inserting a tester (available cheap at parts store). Verify no "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" lights on dash are not lit. This light indicates a problem with the Engine or Powertrain Control Module, not that the vehicle requires maintenance.

Many other things will cause a no-start condition, including contaminated fuel, faulty ignition system, extremely low compression, timing belt failure,etc.

In order for any gasoline engine to start, you must have ample fuel, spark, compression and correct timing (both ignition and camshaft). If you can't check these yourself, you are better letting a pro do it. You will save time and money by not buying unnecessary parts (sounds like you might have already bought an unneeded pump) or possibly damaging other components.
