Some of the common car starting problems stem from a discharged battery, a bad fuel pump (or no fuel), a weakened starter motor, or a broken electrical connection. Checking each part will help troubleshoot why the car won’t start.

Check battery, alternator and starter.
IF these are all good, could be the Alt A or Alt B fused switches near the battery.
If not, could be security system lockout. Does it only happen when you have it locked with the keyless remote and open the door with your spare key and try to start? Try making sure you always use the keyless remote to unlock first. Does it only happen when its cold? Other threads suggest there are injector draws when it is below freezing.

The very most common problem with all General Motors vehicles is the side post batteries. Corrosion builds up and you do not get a good connection. Remove the negative cable First and Install it last. Clean the battery terminal and the cable ends with a wire brush or a battery cleaning agent. Check the water in the battery. If this does not take care of the problem then you need to have a professional check it out for you.
Possibilities include but are not limited to:
* low battery(possibly caused by a faulty battery, alternator problems or "something" that's draining the battery)

I had an experience with a 1993 Colt that died for no aparent reason. It was the catalytic converter had suddenly gotten stopped up from rust flaking off the inside of the exhaust manifold. You can test this by taking the exhaust pipe loose from the exhaust manifold and see if the car will start.
I have the same problem 1995 Buick riviera SC MINE HAS WOrked great for the past month unlocking it with the remote but today i used the key to unlock it and the security light came on and it would not crank.
using the remote seems to keep it working but using the key is the problem, it triggers the security system and a 15 minute wait.
do you have a remote or are you using the key. ive heard small wires can break in the door locking module and it senses that its being opened with out a key and triggers the antitheft.
Mine has never failed to start using the remote.

On a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe, the starter is located on the top of the engine just to the right of the heat protector. To replace it, you have to remove the negative cable on the battery, and then remove the starter cables. Then remove the 2 bolts that hold the starter in place.

Check the terminals in boots are fully snapped on to ends of plugs. Also proper torque on plugs. Remeber if loose, thee is no compression & gases won't fire.
Why does your car start then stop immediately?
two causes I can think of without more information. You are trying to use a non-VATS key in the ignition of a VATS vehicle. If that's not it, the fuel pressure regulator could be stuck wide open (but it would run for a few seconds). If the key deal is not the problem, put a fuel pressure tester on it, start it and see what the reading on the guage acts like. If it drops to zero (or very low), you've probably got a fuel related problem.

Why does a car squeal when it is started?
If you suspect a slipping belt a simple test is to hold a bar of handsoap against the belt while the vehicle is running, being careful not to catch your hand in the belt nor the fan. The squeal will disappear in seconds.
Squeal is caused by belts 99% of time. The belt could have dirt on it, be misaligned a bit, or possibly just moisture. A bad belt should be replaced, but squealing can happen from a good belt as well. You can probably fix the problem by removing the tensioner bolts and loosening/tightening the belt and clean pulley/belt off. The sticky spray in the stores actually is BAD, b/c your belt will start grabbing dirt and dust from the air. The spray is just a very very temporary solution. The squeal will come back eventually (sometimes in a matter of seconds after spraying).

Probably a belt slipping. If you pull the belt off and spin each pully, you may find a bearing going bad. Or it may just be a glazed belt. Try taking some valve grinding compound and applying it at several places on the belt-both sides. (while the engine is off). This usually takes care of the noise.

how long does it run before it cuts out? If it runs for about 5 or 10 minutes and won't start again until it is cold it could be the crankshaft position sensor. If it runs for a few minutes, sounds more like a ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor.

The distributor in the Civics has a function of also engaging the coil to create spark. No spark = no fire. Perhaps take a plug out, leave the lead on, hold it with INSULATED pliers against a solid metal part of the engine and get someone to crank the engine over. If the plug sparks - coil and firing switch OK. If no spark, check coil first - remove main + feed lead from coil terminals and check on a meter for power with key on but NO motor cranking. No power = faulty distributor/firing switch.No other ideas sorry! GH
