Car Starting Problems

Some of the common car starting problems stem from a discharged battery, a bad fuel pump (or no fuel), a weakened starter motor, or a broken electrical connection. Checking each part will help troubleshoot why the car won’t start.

What tools needed to change a starter?

Most starters have two or three bolts holding them in and one bolt holding the wire from the battery on. And you usually have to get under the car to get to it.

So...you need a floor jack, jackstands and wrenches in sizes to fit the bolts.

As for the procedure:

unhook the battery, jack up the car and put it on jackstands.

crawl under and find the starter

pull off the push-on wire that goes to the ignition switch. Unbolt the wire to the battery. Remove the two bolts holding the starter in place and remove the starter from the car without dropping it on your head.

Crawl out with it, take it to the auto parts store and trade it in on a rebuilt one.

Installation is the reverse of removal.

Where is the starter solenoid on a 92 mercury?

WHat model Merc is it? Most are on the starter itself. Look at the starter, if it has a large wire and one or two small wires the sel is on the starter, if the starter has only one large wire and nothing else the sel is somewhere else, follow the large wire and you will find it.

-- Model would be helpful to determine this for sure. But here is the best way to find it on most cars. Find the positive battery terminal (+) on the battery. Follow the thick cable coming off that. It will either go to something bolted to the fenderwell (which should have some smaller wires & one other thick wire attached to it), or all the way down to a smaller cylinder mounted o nthe larger cylinder of the starter.

Either of those is the solenoid. Ford/Lincoln/Mercury often used the fenderwell mounted solenoids on their cars.

Another option for helping find parts is to go to the auto parts store (or their website, and look up the part, then look at what the new one looks like, and try to match that to something under the hood.

How do you trip the cylinoid in the starter on a 1988 vw cabriolet Once the car has been driven half hour then turned off the starter will not do anything Turn the key and nothing Help please?

you dont ... you get a new starter motor because your cylinoid is busted ..... == A better answer is you let it sit for half an hour or more while the starter cools down. It will start again when the engine cools down. The starter heats up from starting, the engine conducting heat, and from being next to the exhaust manifold. Cheap starter rebuilders do not leave enough room for thermal expansion. You have a rebuilt starter. ALWAYS insist on a BOSCH starter! You do need a new starter. I went through 2 starters before I found this out. Automatic transmission starters suffer from heat-soak, especially as they age. VW knew about this, issued a technical bulletin about it and installed hot-start relay kits on affected cars. You can easily do it yourself: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2593146 ; be sure the heat-shield is in-place as well.

If no spark is happening does that mean it could be the coil?

I would suspect you are talking about a gasoline engine and if so than yes if the coil is bad you will not get a spark. But that is not the only reason why you may not have spark. Pull the coil wire off and pull the insulation back on the end of the wire, stick a screwdriver into the coil where the wire should go, then hold the wire about an 1/8 away from the metal part of the screwdriver and have someone try to start the engine if the coil is good it should arc between the screwdriver and the wire. Be careful to only hold the insulation on the wire and the nonmetalic handle on the screwdriver, a coil can give off up 100,000 volts, it won't kill you but it hurts like hell.

What causes white smoke to come from an diesel mondeo exhaust during the first start of the day?

If it is only at the start of the day and disappears shortly after startup, it is just condensation in the exhaust that is burning off. Pretty normal, especially in cold or rainy weather.

What could cause an 88 Caprice to lose all its power instantly while driving making you pull over then be unable to restart the car when no noises were heard in the engine and the car still turns over?

Quite possibly a failed fuel pump. What you would have noticed was the engine misfiring then stalling. It happens pretty quickly and you would not hear a thing. vbd that or running out of fuel. could also be that your throttle valve cable near the carb needs to be adjusted or replaced. this would cause your car to lose power and/or delayed shifting of the the transmission, usually accompanied with a loud noise when pressing the gas pedal

Is your starter bad if you can start your truck at the solenoid but if you try to start it with key nothing happens?

it sounds like either the selenoid or the switch is bad.

AnswerIs the solonoid mounted to the starter? If it is mounted to the fender, near battery, I presume you have a ford truck. Check for voltage at small gauge wire while cranking, this wire goes to ignition switch> If you have no juice, check switch on steering column, if you have juice, make sure all wires are clean and tight at sol. Apply voltage to small gauge wire conn. at sol,(wire disconnected), if the starter doesn't engage, you likely have a solonoid issue. AnswerTake it to the autoelectrician and get him to wire a relay onto the solenoid to give it a bit more juice. This is often a cheap fix. AnswerSounds similar to a problem I had with a '97 Neon. After going off the road and landing in about 12 inches of water starter began to give problems. It would go with a boost but once the ign was turned off it was dead. A friend showed me how to short the solenoid and after 10 or 12 times the problem fixed itself. With a STEEL (not chromed) screwdriver against the post of the solenoid and booster cables off the pos terminal of the battery have someone crank the engine. Only drawback is this requires 4 hands.

Again, it seems like you suddenly had this problem. everything above can be the problem. But "don't put the cart in front of the horse". It can just be fuse,or a fuseable link. There are about 3 fuses, and 1 fuseable link that can cause this. DO THE EASY THINGS FIRST. Also make sure your key itself is OK, and that the chip inside the key is good before going to the above answers.

Clicking noise but engine will not turn over?

Battery, starter, starter relay solonoid, or a charging problem i.e. alternator or voltage regulator causing battery to discharge. Or bad battery cable connection or dirty or loose battery cable connections can cause this problem. Need to investigate & narrow it down.

Why will a car start and run for a few minutes then loses power to the engine like you stopped giving it gas dies and will not start again after about 10 minutes you can start the car again?

i can start the car, and it runs for a few meters, dies out like im giving it no gas. then it will not restart. after sitting about 10 minutes or so, it will start again and is drivable for a few more meters, then dies again to have the whole process rinse and repeat itself . it also makes a loud rattling noise like the valves are rattleing and then loses all horsepower then dies. once its started back up it sounds like the lifters are tapping, and just gets louder until the car dies again. it will not idle on its own.

Why does my 1992 Chevy silverado K1500 350 crank but doesnt start?

There is a fuel pressure test port right behind the throttle body. Borrow, rent or buy a fuel pressure gauge and see if the fuel pressure is building. If not, fuel pump failure is common after the vehicle gets a few miles on it. You could TRY the filter but that's probably not the problem.

If you're building pressure, run a computer diagnostic to see if the computer has detected a problem.

Why does starter keep breaking?

Starter Failures

There could be several causes for a starter to fail, but when replacement starters continually fail I have found one cause.

It is critical that a starter's gears be in perfect alignment with the gears on the flywheel. If the alignment is not perfect, then massive forces are imposed on the starter gear, and thus are transmitted to the shaft, and finally the bearings/bushings.

These forces rapidly accelerate the wear of the internal components of the starter and thus cause premature failure.

For years in the "old" days, the problem was so bad that most auto manufacturers used "shims" between the starter and the mounting flange on the engine to "custom" align the starters. And any replacement starters had to be carefully aligned upon installation.

In order to be sure the starter gear is in proper alignment with the flywheel gears, it is important to be sure that the starter is mounted in perfect alignment. Due to the difficulty, and knowledge and experience required to properly mount a starter, is is sometime best to have a Professional automotive Technician install a starter.

Why your battery is drained and wont start and all you do is play the radio while cleaning car?

What can I do if a engine won't turn over?

You got to find a place to start. The ignition switch "start position" sends voltage to a relay or the starter solenoidwhich has a switch in it to make the starter operate. The car has to be in park or neutral also for the circuit to be completed. On some vehicles the clutch pedal must be depress to complete the circuit. what are you missing?
