Check Engine Light

There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.

Just EGR valve. It works with the exhaust to re-burn fuel. If it is not operating properly, the car will have a tendency to stall at idle, run rough, and not perform up to standard. Could be the valve stem is jammed due to carbon. You can try and clean it, or just replace it if that is the problem. Also check to make sure the vacum line is good.

It could be anything... u need to have that code reader thing connected to ur car and it'll tell u the code. The best way to do it is to take it to an auto store, such as Auto Zone, they do it for free.

Yes, it will pass the safety inspection, BUT it may or may not pass the emmissions testing required in the larger metro areas AND it will depend on the inspection station as some will tell you it won't pass with the check engine light on for any reason and will refuse to do the test regardless of what the light indicates. Also there is provision for getting the emmission passed if you've spent some amount(around $250) will get you a valid inspection but it has to be spent at a shop certified for emmission(or some such) and the Motor Vechile Dept. will wave the emmission test (until next year). Cars between 2 and 24 year old are required to get the emmissions test vehicles 24 and older are only required to have the safety inspection.

I use a scan tool after repairing the cause of the code that turned the light on.

The check engine light (service engine soon) comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on, too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to a parts store or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.

If you have an OBD (On Board Diagnostics) scanner, you can read the error code and reset check engine light. Obviously, if the problem is still occurring the light will come back on. Most of the chain autoparts places will read and reset the OBD for you for free.

When the light comes on you can check it with a OBD ii handheld scanner that you can purchase or go to your local auto parts store that will probably check it for free and tell you what the code is. However, most stores will NOT reset the computer because they cannot confirm that the repair was performed properly. Unless the OBDii code is cleared from the computer by the attached reader the code will keep reappearing, even if you disconnect the battery and try and reset it. If you use a mechanic then they will reset all codes after they perform the necessary repairs.

I'm not sure about a '99, but I know for '95 and earlier the only way to clear the check engine light is to have a mechanic hook up your car to a computer ('running a diagnostic'). It takes them <5 mins and no effort, but invariably costs ~$80. Now is the time to call in a small favor from a friend in the business. The light will remain on even after the problem has been fixed until it is reset.

Disconnect the negative battery cable, and then hold down the brake pedal for 8-10 seconds.

This works! I just reset the check engine light on my 1996 Miata M but used a slightly different procedure. I disconnected the positive terminal instead of the negative only because it was easier to get to. Admittedly, it's bit riskier because of the potential to short out the terminal against the frame with the wrench but none the less effective.

An an electronic tech I concluded, whether accurate or not, the science behide the brake pedal trick was to discharge any remaining queertrons lurking in the circuit. With that in mind I also turned on the headlights just for good measure. After the suggested 8-10 seconds waiting period I reconnected everything and voila the check engine had indeed reset as advertised. Before you begin though, I suggest you record all your radio station presets as those too, along with the time, will also be lost.

This is an emissions related problem. Certain emissions components are warrantied for 8 years and 80,000 miles. Return it to the dealer for repair. Your owner's manual will tell you what your warranty rights are. You reset the light with an OBD2 scanner, after the problem has been corrected.

Replace the camshaft sensor for whichever bank the code specified. Simple fix

I took my 2000 galant to auto zone to find out why my service engine soon light won't go off, and they testing and said it was a sensory problem and said when I take it to an auto repair tell them it was a P0135.

go to auto zone to get your check engine light codes read. When it blinks that means there is more than one problem. Those codes will most likely help you figure out why your car is trying to die. I have a '98 Intrepid as well and the array of problems it has is amazing. Good luck...

are all the electrical connections intact to the transfer case? Or are they ripped off? Is your shift linkage bent or broken? what happens when you grab the shifter and shift it?

Crawl underneath and have a look to make sure your linkage is intact and adjusted to shift properly and engages transfer case all the way in to position(invite a friend((slave)) over for beer and get them to shift it in and out while you watch the action). There is a contact at your shift linkage(similar to the one that lights your brakes when you press the pedal) that when shifted into four wheel drive turns light on, is it there and functioning(take a digital multimeter and test for power shift it in and out of four wheel drive?

Most importantly get a hanes manual for your truck it will help a great deal. I think your problem is simple, and you should check all the things i told you above first.

i am not a mechanic by trade but i have rebuilt a few vehicles in my day and that's what i'd try.

Most likely a vacuum leak. Check the lines around the injector pump. Paid dealer to fix mine and this is what they found.

Could be anything.. If your still running, it's something stupid.. Maybe your Cad is clogged or just not hitting back right at the stats

means something is not working coeerctly, but without knowning what the light is for or what vehicle, that's all i can tell you

A check engine light means you have a possible problem with the emission system , you should get the Ranger scanned for trouble codes to diagnose and repair the problem . Once the problem has been repaired the check engine light can be reset.

Try to keep the ignition key turned to the contact position without starting the engine and hold the the reset button .... the one you use to reset your miles on trip .... that should work ...

when the engine is cool, check the anti-freeze level. it may be low.
