At least in my car a 2003 impala to clear the check engine light I pulled a fuse called the PCM fuse from my underhood fuse box overnight and put it back in when I left for work and it cleared. I only do this after getting the code pulled at autozone for free and attempting to fix the problem, in this case it was a EVAP code that I fixed by locating a loose vacuum line. Anyway after a driving cycle which seems to be 90 mi in my car the light will return if the problem is not resolved.

Before changing any gas caps. Why don't you try using a fuel injector cleaner. Get a real big / or the bigger fuel injector cleaner you can buy and pour it in on your next fill up. I bet after the next fill up or two everything will be ok. I had the same problem on mines. The only way to check, if your cap is bad go to a local state inspection shop and they will check it for you for a small feed of course.

What causes high purge flow in EVAP canister system?
The EVAP Canister System is the system that purges the gas tank of most air in it, making it a vacuum and keeping the lines fairly void of anything but gas. Unfortunately, unless your going to be able to give all the codes from your check engine light andd remove the exhaust to get to the gas tank, this is not something you will be able to fix on your own or I can even nail down to a specific item that is messed up.
