Clutches and Flywheels

Clutches and flywheels are parts of a car’s transmission, enabling drivers to accelerate and change gears. They come in a variety of combinations based on the driver’s needs and quality of the ride.

How is a fly wheel manufactured and what is it made off?

A flywheel is made basically like a brake rotor, and the clutch disc is made like brake pads. The spinning flywheel is pressed against the clutch disc, which is made of hard steel--the idea being to get the clutch side of the trans to spin.

Do flywheels interchange between small block chevy's?

Yes, except for the 400 which has an externally balanced flywheel, and dampner.

How to remove clutch cable for a 2006 wide glide harley?

1. Take the tension out of the cable by loosening the adjustment on the cable. 1/2" and 9/16" wrench required.

2. Take the Allen screws out of the right side transmission cover. (may have to remove exhaust to do so.

3. Remove C-clip holding clutch mechanism inside the trans cover.

4. Remove cable from clutch mechanism and unscrew cable from trans cover.

5. Remove pin on handlebar lever and remove cable from lever.

To install reverse removal instructions

***Note*** Be careful when threading new cable into trans case. DO NOT over tighten you will break the new cable

How do you install a clutch on a 2003 Honda cbr600?

To replace the clutch plates, drain the oil, and the right side engine cover has to come off. Then, remove the clutch bolts in a criss-cross pattern, slowly releasing the pressure on the clutch plates. Usually just the fibre plates are replaced, the metal ones may be ok. Buy a clutch rebuild kit with new springs, plates, and cover gasket.

Why would you hear a grinding noise when the clutch is depressed even when in neutral Vauxhall Vectra?

This happened to me 2 months ago on my Astra. New clutch! Unfortuantely it means clutch plate is knackered. replace it whilat the car is still driveable or it'll go on you at the worst possible time!

What is the difference between a Chevy 168 tooth flywheel an a 153 toothed flywheel?

Just as the name implies the 168 tooth flywheel has 168 tooth ring gear and the 153 tooth flywheel has 153 teeth on it's ring gear. In the "old days" of high performance the manual 4 speed transmissions allowed a larger diameter 11" clutch to be used with the higher performance engines with the larger 168 tooth wheel. In addition to this the larger diamater flywheel gives the starter better mechanical advantage to turn over high compression engines because of the greater number of teeth on the larger ring gears. Chevy uses a number of different starter noses on their starters. This is the aluminum piece that the bendix gear is in at the "business end" of the starter. This nose is the piece that mounts the starter to the block. This nose is the part of the starter that moves the starter motor in closer to the flywheel on the 153 tooth and farther out away from the flywheel on the 168 tooth wheels. I believe the starter motors are mostly the same except for the HD starters which have a longer stator and rotor for the high compression engines of "the old days". These longer starters allowed the starter motors to develop more torque to turn the higher compression engines over to start them.

Why does air keep getting into the hydraulic clutch line?

There has to be a leak; anywhere from clutch to clutch cylinder. The most likely cause is that the master cylinder is allowing it past the seals. But it could be "sucked in" through the seals in the slave cylinder, or through a loose fitting. Note, however, that loose fittings may leak fluid noticeably. The cycliinders may be a bit more subtle in corrupting the system by allowing air in but not allowing much if any fluid to escape.

Where is the clutch slave cylinder on a 1986 corvette and how do you properly bleed it?

It is located next to the transmission. This should help you. http://www.corvetteamerica.com/cf/displaylearnmore.cfm?learnmoreid=328&idlist=p_41407,p_41408,p_35688,p_28785,p_33490,328,p_44829,p_44622,p_44673,327,p_41409,p_44676,p_44674,p_44672&searchdest=%2Fcf%2Flearnmorelist%2Ecfm%3Fsubcategoryid%3DX735&subcategoryid=X good luck there should be a bleeder valve on the slave cylinder.Bleed it in the same manner as a brake job. good luck

Where is the bleeder valve for the master cylinder on a 1997 2.5L wrangler?

Doesn't have a bleeder valve on the master. You have to bleed the brake system at the wheels.

Three advantages of a hydraulic clutch system compared to mechanical types?

There are several advantages of a hydraulic clutch system. They include the use of compressible fluid, ease of spotting leaks over a mechanical clutch, and a high power density and actuators.

Is it possible to bleed a prefilled clutch slave cylinder?

Sure, but you also need to get the air out of the lines and the master cylinder. Put the slave on, then bleed the clutch keeping a supply of brake fluid in the reservoir.

How do you change a clutch on a transit connect van?

Remove front driver seat . Disconect battery . Remove wheels . Take cluch rod off . Clutch falls out . Refit as removed

Brake fluid is running down the clutch pedal and when you mash the pedal the pedal remains on the floor?

Actually if the fluid is coming down the clutch pedal it is probably your clutch master cylinder going bad or the seal around it. No worries it is a cheap fix. If it is coming down the clutch pedal it has nothing to do with your brakes. Some people well most use brake fluid for the clutch.

Does it hurt the transmission to down shift through 123 on an automatic?

Well, maybe.

I've done this on a lot of the cars I've driven and never done any

noticeable damage. However, you don't want to down shift an auto at

too high a speed/rpm. If you're traveling at 45 miles per hour and down shift

into 1st, you may or may not experience a severe jolt forward as the car loses

momentum. Or you may or may not hear bad sounds from the transmission.

Some cars just won't shift if the RPM's are too high. Others will, although I would guess that most modern cars won't let you do anything TOO stupid.

Actually, there's really no good reason to manually down shift an auto. It's smart

enough to shift (or not)when it should. The only reason I did it was to show off and pretend that I was driving a hot rot with a stick ;)
