The front-wheel drive ones do - two of them. One for each front wheel.

this is not the definitive ans. but and answer all the same .. in order for an amateur to change a c.v boot i feel it would be adviseable to first remove the outer c v joint first then replace the old boot by cutting it off with a junior hack saw and fitting the new one with care .notwithstanding this is a fair procedure and many people would not know that a split boot can also be obtained that glues together iin place and fairly simple to fit but will never last as long as a complerte new boot .

On my CV axles in my 99 Malibu they run at 130 a pop, and they can definitely be a serious problem, all the way to the point they can break or crack and cause you thousands of dollars worth of damage

Jack up the car and place jack stands under a solid area Peen the safety lock on the axle nut with a hammer an chiesel Remove the axle nut with a strong impact gun and a 1 1/4" socket Remove the brake caliper & hang it with a tie wrap Remove the brake shoe housing Remove tie rod from spindle Remove the ABS wire harness clip in strut Remove the 2 strut bolts with a 17mm socket and wrenches Remove lower ball joint locking bolt Swing down spindle assembly and remove axle assembly from outer splines Knock out axe from transmission side

Note: If axle is seized in hub, spindle assemble must be removed with axle attached and then heated and removed.

Both ends need removed.

In my experience, the noise would be a rapid high pitched clunk when turning the wheel in either direction. It would depend on if it was the outer or inner joint, most likely you will expect to pay over $100 at a decent mechanic. The cv joint itself is probably around $25-$30.

CV joints make loud clicking noises when the steering wheel is turned while vehicle is moving (usually when accelerating). If you put off replacing them for too long, the bearings will fall out and you will have to pay a tow truck to tow the vehicle. The bearings are marble sized and fit inside the boot - generally when a CV joint goes out, it's because of the bearings.

This is not a easy task..Suggest you get that done by a good mechanic.I have found it to be less expensive to change the whole axle [parts & labor considered ] Z-Man

a cv joint is like a driveshaft for a rear end. front wheel drive cars have them and most newer 4wd front ends. its what makes your car go when put in gear

Is it a loud thump like something has hit under the car?

Just a guess... but the constant velocity joint maintains appropriate speed on the wheel while in a turn.

It could make a grinding type noise when moving slow. A "whirrr" type whine when moving faster. The grinding noise may change to a clunking noise when turning the wheel. Any of these noises means "fix me now or else."

buy the repair manual for the car, it gives this repair step by step. It's also handy to have for future repairs and it only cost $15-$20. It's worth it.

You have to remove the wheel first then the breaks and then the disk once that is done it should be easy to get to the cv joint however be careful when removing the disk bc u have a bearing that may come loose though it wouldn't hurt to check it oh and I forgot there a steering arm you need to unscrew too good luck it should all be common sense from then on

Just did this literally two days ago. It's not that bad really. Once you get the rotor off just undo the bolts holding the upper control ARM and the tie rod (one bolt each). You mite need an air hammer to get that axle loose tho. Good luck

On the 89 I have, you pull the brake, rotor, shock and use a gear puller to disconnect the steering knuckle. Then you use an impact gun to loosen the nut that holds the CV spline into the wheel hub. remove the flange bolts that hold the inside of the CV to the differential. Turn the steering wheel towards the side youre not replacing to get more room under there and the CV should pop out easy.

If you have the proper tools you can change it in about 1.5 hours or less.

Take the hubcap off remove the cuuter key take off washer and remove nut at the center of wheel. It is tight you may need a pipe on your breaking bar. Jack up and secure car take off wheel. remove two bolts on the swing arm. there are two bolts below the strut that can be removed. Pull down on lower assembly and you will get yhe axel out of the outside hub. Now is where the fun begins the axle will either slip out with some force or prying or you may have to remove 6 bolts (12mm) on the inner side closest to engine and then remove.

when braking i get a cliking noise my mechinic checked this out but found nothing

A RUBBING SOUND COULD BE SEVERAL THINGS. COULD BE WHEEL BEARING , DID YOU JUST REPLACE THE ROTORS.? IF SO DID YOU MAKE CERTAIN THE ROTORS WERE SEATED PROPERLY. SOMETIMES YOU DONT GET THEM TIGHT ENOUGH AND THEY WILL WOBBLE AND MESS UP THE BEARING. COULD BE THE CV JOINT IS GOING BAD IF THE CAR IS PRETTY OLD THAT WILL HAPPEN AND YES IT WILL SOUND LIKE A RUBBING NOISE MORE GRINDING BUT COULD SOUND LIKE RUBBING. YOU COULD JUST HAVE A WARPED ROTOR IS THERE A FLUCTUATION IN THE BRAKE PEDDAL WHEN YOU STEP ON IT TO STOP.? JACK UP THE CAR AND PUT SOMTHING BEHIND THE BACK WHEELS, PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND SPIN THAT TIRE SEE IF YOU HERE ANYTHING...IF YOU DO MAYBE BEARING. DRIVE THE CAR AND SEE IF THE NOISE GETS WORSE WHEN YOU MAKE TURNS....CV JOINT GOOD LUCK............

On some cars, the abs sensors may read off of a tone ring on the cv joint.
