check your fuses
try putting vehicle in neutral, then shutting vehicle off. then try putting in park
if this works it is a fuse or the neutal safety switch

had the same problem... in the alternator are two charcole sticks they ware down after a while and then they ground out on the inside of the alternator. I took mine apart and changed the 2 sticks. this was a lot of work its easier to buy a used alternator. to see if this is your problem just disconect the power wires to the alternator start the call and then see if the fuse blows

My shift knob is stuck in park does anyone know how to fix it On a 92 Ford Festiva?

check your fuses
also try turning ignition on without starting engine. then with foot ob brake , put transmission in neutral
then start vehicle
this will usually over ride what ever was the problem if the fuses are all good

Why does your 1991 Ford Festiva run smoothly then start lagging but when you turn the key off for three seconds then back on it smooths out again for the next few miles Has done this for a year?

Water in the fuel filter, or possibly a fuel pump going bad. I would check the filter first.

It could be the fuel pump going bad. If you take out the fuel assembly underneath the back seat check the fuel filter sock to see if it is covered in a brown looking substance. If it is you will probably have to replace the gas tank. My91 festiva had a rusting gas tank after sitting for a few months and all the corrosion was getting sucked up and caught in the filter. After it got down to half a tank of gas it would loose power and start sputtering out until it would stall. I replaced the tank and it runs great now.

Ford festiva wont start?

Fix it, then...by checking the fuel pump, fuel fuse or fuse linkage, make sure the MAF (mass air flow...where the air filter is located), fuel filter is not clogged, starter is ok, or check to see if the fuel shut-off isn't tripped. I'd start by betting a repair manual for the car and educate yourself. You can pick them up for very cheap on amazon, I got one for less than $5. Hope this helps.

I am guessing that this is a manual shift .

It has no actual stick .

You must take the speedo cable housing loose at the trans , 10mm bolt and pull it up , the fluid level check is on the end of that assy.

very easy to do .

How do you replace a thermostat in a 1990 Ford Festiva?

On the top part of your Radiator, there is a large hose, about 1 1/2" in diameter going over to a "gooseneck" fitting which is bolted to the head with two bolts. Drain the radiator, remove the hose, and remove the two bolts holding the gooseneck to the head. Inside the gooseneck is where the thermostat goes. Use a new gasket and be VERY careful to put the new thermostat in position correctly and to bolt the gooseneck back to the head......incorrectly done the gooseneck can break! I've done it and another one is very hard to come by. Once the gooseneck is in place, reconnect the hose and fill the radiator. That's it, but again, be VERY careful.

How do you install an alternator belt on a 1993 Ford Festiva?

First of all, you'll want to remove the old belt. This can be done by loosening the adjustment bolt on the alternator bracket. On my alternator (I have a '93 Festiva but an '88 alternator--not sure why) I have only 2 bolts that hold my alternator in place: the pivot bolt below and the adjustment bolt above.

You'll see that the adjustment bolt is located on an adjustable bracket: once the adjustment bolt is loosened slightly, you'll be able to pivot the alternator forwards and backwards.

After loosening the adjustment bolt, pivot the alternator to decrease tension on the belt. Remove the belt, keeping in mind which pulleys it was connected to, so that you can properly install the new belt.

I just did this today on my car, and I used a V-style belt. Your local auto parts store should be able to find the right part though. Make sure that you take your old belt with you to the store so that the new belt is exactly the same size.

Install the new belt. On my car, there were 3 pulleys to hook it around, including the one on the alternator. Pivot the alternator to increase tension on the belt until you feel a fair amount of resistance, then tighten the adjustment bolt.

Now to check belt deflection. This is a test of whether you got the belt to the correct tightness. Get out your 6 inch cheap-o plastic ruler. Find a spot directly halfway between two of the pulleys and push on the belt. You should be able to push the belt "in" 0.5 inch. Belt deflection on certain cars varies, but I've been seeing 0.5 inches on every place I look.

With that, you should be done changing out the belt. Hopefully this helps at least a little. I've been working on my alternator today, so all of this is fresh in my mind. I still need to check my belt deflection because I don't know where my girlfriend keeps her rulers. Haha.
