Depending on your car this is pretty easy.
First you need to raise the rear end of the vehicle about 24 inches and rest it on sturdy jack-stands. (Never work under any vehicle supported only by its jack.) Make sure you are on firm ground or a concrete slab so the jack-stands will not shift. Choke the front tires so they can't roll when the rear end is up in the air. Jack up the rear of the vehicle on one side and place a stand under a solid part of the chassis but out of the way of your work. Lower the vehicle onto the stand, making adjustments as the stand takes the whole weight of the vehicle. Repeat for the other side. For safety, put the spare tire under the tire of the side you're working under, in case of a jack-stand failure.
There's probably going to be a U-bolt or some kind of piece holding the intake side of the muffler to the pipe. I would recommend first going to Auto Zone or another parts dealer and telling exactly what kind of car you have.
Generally the people that work there will actually go and look under your car and see for themselves. There are different size openings on mufflers so you MAY want to measure both holes on the muffler just to have that extra info. You probably wont need it. Mufflers usually cost less than $20 or so.
Once you get it home just take that U-bolt off, slide the old one out, slide the new one on, clamp the u-bolt back and your done. There may be another bracket that keeps the very back of the muffler off the ground so that will need to be put back also. You may need a new tailpiece for your muffler if its rusty. This is one of those simple repairs that is really fundamental. I have seen some crazy ones that have housings over them and the exhaust, but that is a different story.

49 ft. lbs. Start tightening from the center outward in a criss-cross pattern working your way out from center. Set torque wrench at 22 ft-lbs and do all ten in pattern above. Then set at 36 ft-lbs and do all ten. Finally, set the torque wrench at 49 ft-lbs and go slowly. If you feel a stud not locking in as the others did, STOP! You may have a stripped stud. Do not go back to that stud until all the others are OK. Remember! BEFORE THE STUDS GO ON, 1.) Get a tap and tap the holes in the block. Blow the holes out with W-D 40 and then use a can of "air" to blow out the W-D 40. 2.) Get a die for the studs and mount each stud in a vise. Run the die down the threads to clean and reform the valley-peaks. 3.) Add a VERY LIGHT amount of oil to the threads before they go in. This will give accurate torque readings when the studs are installed. The torque values here are for WET threads (not dry as usual) Recheck the studs at the 100 mile mark (as per a tech at the dealer).

Yes this is a complex problem however if you are comfortable with some tools here is a step by step answer for you...
Step 1) empty the storage section under the armrest - remove bottom trim plate and remove screws - Pull out cup holder insert and remove 3 screws 2 down in the middle and 1 at an angle pointing towards the dash - remove the armrest and plastic surround as one unit - note you will have to lift the parking brake lever to remove this large piece of plastic.
Step 2) remove 2 screws holding the shifter / dash trim that are now exposed, may also have screw behind ash tray - and remove shifter trim - top part is clipped and the switches are wired so be careful and rotate item out of the way - disconnection wires is not necessary.
Step 3) you now have access to the stereo mounting screws on either side of the stereo - remove them unclip the stereo and install the new wiring harness dash kit and stereo.
Step 4) put everything back together in reverse - note when putting the armrest piece back in you will need to line it up and then smack it lightly from the back to get it to pop back into place with the base of the shifter.
If not comfortable with stuff get the manual as previously suggested or take it to a professional.
