You have lost your keys to your 1998 Oldsmobile intrigue How do you get a key made?

The popular answer is to bring your VIN# and proof of ownership to the dealer and they can make you a key. Unfortunately, this is not the case. GM does not keep key code records for vehicles over 10 years old, so in the case of the 1998, they cannot help. The only solutions are:

(1) - Call a locksmith and prepare to pay. Most start at $120 for this service, but they usually charge more.

(2) - Replace the key cyllinder. You can get a replacement at a parts store, with new keys. The problem is, if you don't have the old key, you will have to disassemble the steering column and remove the steering wheel to do this. If you have an air bag, this could cause the airbag to deploy and cost you about $3000 to replace. This makes option (1) above not seem so expensive after all.

What is wrong with the Oldsmobile Intigue when it cuts off while your driving but it starts back up with no problem?

May be a defective ignition control module, or coilpack. I had a bad ignition switch that was cutting power to the fuel pump, when it does this listen for the fuel pump to come on before restarting. I have a 2000 Intrigue. I had the same problem and it was a crank case sensor. You might get a cheap fuel pressure gauge and hook it up. See what the fuel pressure reads when the engine dies (do this in the driveway). If the pressure is dying, try a new fuel filter. Answer Ignition switch

What makes a check engine light come on in an Oldsmobile Intrigue?

to many things to count, if it still runs fine it is usually something like an egr sensor or o2 sensor, it could be any bad sensor or any other electrical problem, the only real way to find out is to check it with a code reader or scan tool, most parts stores will check it for free and then try and sell you the part, a shop will charge a fortune just to look at it

Is it OK to put water in a 1996 Atro radiator instead of orange engine cooler?

Yes, you can. Depending on how much you put in, it will change the boiling point of the coolant. If it's just a little bit, you shouldn't affect it that much. If it's a lot, you have to watch the temperature more often. For best results, you need a 50/50 mixture of coolant & water.

How much damage putting wrong antifreeze in engine?

It depends.

If your car uses the special long-life coolant dex-cool (orange) no immediate damage with normal 50 water 50 antifreeze. However, according to GM for my Oldsmobile Intrigue doing this would reduce the suggested coolant maintenance point from 150,000 miles down to 30,000 miles.

If your car uses normal (green) anti-freeze and you were to use dex-cool it could permanently damage the vehicle since the particles not designed for the vehicle will always remain.

So what did the manufacturer suggest as optimal and what did you put? And what do you consider as damage? Introducing a hassle or complete breakage?

How do you fix an engine misfire on a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue when the plugs wires and coils are good?

On computer controlled engines such as the 3.8L or 3.5L on Intrigues, misfires can happen for any number of reasons. The diagnostics may contain codes that show what's wrong if the unit is read, but these stored codes should also light your "Check Engine" light. You could try having the unit read at Autozone or a dealer, but this may not show anything, especially if the computer itself is bad. When the engine goes to limp-in mode it may seem to be misfiring since all the sensor settings are set to a nominal value. The engine will run, but definitely not smoothly. This type of problem is difficult to diagnose by chat room, I'd take it to a dealer and pay the piper.

ANOTHER ANSWER

I was also told this can also be caused by issues in the fuel system i.e. low fuel pressure, injector issue, etc. Might want to try a new fuel filter (under the body - driver side around the rear driver side door) and some throttle-body cleaner, and also add a can of fuel injector cleaner at your next fill-up.

ALSO - check for vacuum leaks. They can be causing a lean-out condition on your fuel-mix (too much air).

I'm experiencing this very issue right now, with a "Service Engine Soon" light for code indicating cylinder 6 misfire detected. I'll let you all know what it ends up being. Starting w/plug & wire, then fuel system.

UPDATE - I tried the fuel-injector cleaner first w/tank of 93 octane, and ran throttle-body cleaner into the open TB. This did not fix it for me.

I then removed the #6 plug wire and plug. The plug looked OK but had an ENORMOUS gap, so I closed it some and cleaned the plug w/throttle-body cleaner and engine degreaser. Then I FOUND THE ISSUE - plug wire had a cracked casing about mid-way in the wire. Replaced all the plug wires and now - $37 later - it runs sound as a pound again!
