Check the fuel regulator. I owned an 83 GTI and an 85 Golf and both had this same problem. I changed the fuel regulator and the problem was fixed.
How do you loosen the air conditioning compressor on a 1988 VW Cabriolet?
I've got a 92 cabriolet. The a/c compressor is held in place by 4 bolts. Two bolts under the a/c are the pivot bolts. The other two are toward the front side of the unit, under the power steering reservoir. In fact if you pull the PS res. off its mount, you can get to the a/c adjustment bolts much easier. Generally they are 13mm or 14mm nuts and bolts. The bolts are in a track that is used to tighten the belt. Lift up on the compressor to tighten the belt. Push down on the compressor to loosen the belts. The adjustment bolts are between the compressor and the front sheet metal of the car, under the p/s res.

1989 vw cabriolet headlights not working?
try removing the light switch......there are contacts inside the switch that are positioned on a spring sometimes these springs pop out of position disabling contact. the switch comes out easy and if you take a small flat head screw driver you can separate the switch and see these contacts. be very careful aponn separating the switch so you don't lose any small pieces. if the contacts and springs appear to be in the right positions then its time for a new switch.

you need to go to the buick dealer and buy a new module and replace. it cost me 15.00 for a 92 park ave. easy job 10 min.
nope. at least not on a 93, and others that have a similar resevoir- its a low coolant level float switch The coolant light blinks when the level is too low and/or there is insufficient cooling. If the level is fine and the car is not overheating (the cooling fan is turning on, the oil temp is okay, etc.), the gauge temperature sender may be faulty.

Replacing fuel pressure accumulator in vw cabriolet?
I have a 92 cabriolet. The fuel pressure regulator is a metal object plugged into the end of the fuel rail in the engine compartment, on the passengers side of the vehile. If you follow the fuel lines from the rear of the car to the front, both of the lines will attach to a cylindrical metal object. The 3rd connection of the regulator plugs into the fuel delivery rail. So one connection is fuel input. One connection is fuel delivery to the engine. One connection is fuel return to the tank. There also may be a vacuum line attached to it as well. A photo of a regulator is at http://images.wrenchead.com/smartpages/partinfo_resize/DUS/217-101.jpg
I have no interest in the photo other than as an explanatory tool.
To remove it, you would remove 2 bolts holding it in place.
remove all fuel lines and vacuum lines
pull it from the fuel rail.
CAREFUL..much fuel will spill!
It could be your oxygen sensor. I had to replace the manifold on my 92 cabby. Couldnt get the old o2 sensor off the old manifold, so I stuck one I had laying around in it. It would start just fine and idle. Then about 2 minutes into running, it would start coughing, spitting and get black smoke out of the exhaust pipe. Going buy a new 02 sensor solved the problem. Theres a cold start circuit, then a normal running circuit. It starts fine cuz the computer ignores the 02 sensor till the engine warms up...about 2 minutes. No guarantee this the answer...but it happened to me.

Your going to have to double check with your owners manual or dealer. It will be a 5w40 synthetic, but I don't know if it needs to meet a certain VW Oil Spec.
Where do you find the torque specs for an 87 VW cabriolet cylinder head?
Torquing the '87 Cabrio cylinder head is a three-step operation. Using the correct 12-point socket and - most importantly, following the correct tightening sequence - torque the head bolts to 30 ft/lbs. Next, go back over the bolts in the same sequence and snug them to 44 ft/lbs. A final torque sequence requires all head bolts to be tightened an additional 1/2 turn. Also suggest you invest in both the Robert Bentley and Haynes service manuals for your vehicle. All specifications, torque values and, where necessary, the correct sequence of tightening, are provided.
i have read it may be the headlight switch the same thing has happened to my 91 dynasty it cost 15.99 from advance auto parts.

How do you remove the back seat to get to the fuel pump on a 91 probe?
Very easy once you know how to do it. Take a flat screw driver and slide it under the front of the rear seat at about 1/4 of the way across the seat. There is a clip the that you can push in and lift that side of the seat up. Then go about 3/4 of the way across the seat and do the same. There are only 2 clips that hold the seat in. Hope this helps. B.A.B.

Park vehicle on level surface. Chock wheels, jack passenger side rear of unit and place on jackstand. Using 13mm socket remove the 4 nuts holding the fuel pump, fuel filter and accumulator bracket as a unit from the body. Lower the bracket, don't over stress the lines or wires. Loosen the 2 banjo fittings in the accumulator. Loosen the strap that holds the accumulator body to the bracket, 10mm. Maintain the same in and out relationship, install the accumulator. Install the banjo fittings, tighten to 6-9 footlbs. Run the engine to check for leaks. No leaks? Re-install the unit onto the body.
