How do you replace the ignition in a 89 Chevy Cavalier?

the easy way is to buy a used steering column from a junk yard. If you have the proper tools [steering wheel puller, tilt wheel spring intaller and remover, torx bits] its simple ! 1st remove the steering wheel 2nd take the 3 torx bolts out, unscrew turn signal arm, unplug the harness under the dash then lift the switch out. Installation is the same.

I think last answer is not a good one. Simnply remove three screws at the bottom front part of the steeering column poastic covers and remove the plastic convers. There are 2 torx bols at tha left side. Remove them.

Your 91 geo metro it is using oil and smokes has had a tune up and valve job what else could it be?

If it has high mileage it may be pushing oil past the piston rings. When a valve job is done to a high mileage motor it tends to worsen a oil consumption problem because it seals the top end of the motor but the bottom end(rings, pistons) cannot hold the extra pressure caused by the now more efficient top end.The tune-up has no bearing on this problem. I would use no less then a 10w40 (preferably 20w50) oil with a can of STP.This will help you to get by.

What could be wrong with a 1994 Cavalier that leaks water on the passenger side carpets if it is not the heater core?

Is it water or coolant? If it's water, you probably have a leaky windshield seal. If it's coolant you could have a heater control valve leak.

What are signs of a bad timing belt?

There are no signs it just goes! Had two of mine go in one year. Be sure to get it changed every 80,000 miles. If they go it could bend your pistons and valves in your engine and totally wreck it. Happened to me twice. Better off just paying a couple hundred to get a new timing belt than a couple thousand for a new engine.

How do you replace serpentine belt on a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier?

Here's an answer from the Pontiac Sunfire group. The cars are basically the same as your Cav. Be aware that your procedures may vary from those used on the Sunfire.

Ah yes, the old serpentine belt raises her ugly head again. These belts are among the most talked about things in this group. We don't mind having at it again for you though.

Because you're asking about belt routing, I'm guessing that maybe your belt has failed already. If it hasn't, DON'T TAKE IT OFF .....yet! Raise the hood of the car and look on the bottom side of the hood for a belt routing diagram. With any luck it's still there. Or, you may find it on the fender well or nearby. If there's no diagram and the belt is still on the car, grab a pen and paper and make your own diagram. You'll need it.

Now, if the belt is gone, you're a little hosed. I've GOOGLE'D my "you know what" off trying to find belt routing diagrams for our Sunfires. I've had little luck. The best bet in this case is to go to a GM dealership to see if they can provide you with the diagram. They'll want to know if the car has AC or not. I guess all Sunfires have power steering, so that shouldn't enter into the equation. Presuming you've come up with a diagram, you're ready to change or replace the belt. The easiest way to get an old one off is with a knife, or some other instrument of destruction. You'll probably have to take the alternator loose to gain a bit of slack in the belt. When I replaced my alternator, it helped to have it loose while I got the belt back on.
In addition to the alternator adjustment, there is a spring loaded tensioner in the belt path. It looks a little different than all the other pulleys, in that the surface is very shiny as it contacts the BACK side of the belt. It's basically just a wheel that rotates with the belt.
The tensioner has a squared off portion on the front surface. This is where you put a wrench or socket or whatever you can make fit on it. Then you rotate it, generally forward, to gain slack, then let it rotate back to take up that slack.

I've found that it helps to have a friend with you when you do this job. The belt is unwieldy and 4 hands work so much better than two at getting and holding it in place. Once it's on, don't forget to adjust and tighten up your alternator if you've taken it loose. If all is well, the belt should be pretty tight. Eyeball everything to make sure it looks right, then start the car. Observe the belt for a minute or two just to ensure that you have it all working correctly and that you don't throw the belt. NOTE: if your car's AC is dead, you can use the belt for the cars without AC and just bypass the compressor. Understand though, that this will involve a slightly different belt routing.

SAVE AND PROTECT your diagram!

BMW 318I SE auxiliary fan not working?

I have similar problem with my 1990 318i and found that the aux fan not working (if you connect power directly - it works) because the thermal switch circuitry is faulty. I have then bipassed the thermal siwitches and made it so that the fan should run when ac is on. It worked for some time but then the fan being faulty itself is drawing too much current and blowing the fuse.

How do you replace the head gasket located on a 1998 Saturn Sl2 automatic?

Procedure

Important When required, refer to the appropriate year service manuals when performing the following procedures.

Remove camshaft from cylinder head. Pressure test cooling system.

While monitoring the pressure gauge for air pressure drop, inspect all hose connections and visible joints for engine coolant leaks. Inspect the camshaft journals and surrounding areas using a bright light, to help locate hairline cracks. (Refer to illustrations for examples of area where cracks may appear.)

Important Air pressure may drop slowly, depending on the severity of the crack(s).

If a crack is detected in one or more of the areas shown, cylinder head assembly must be replaced. If no crack is detected, proceed to step 5. Remove cylinder head and gasket. Proceed to step 6 and flush engine block and cooling system before installing new cylinder head and new cylinder head gasket.

Important Engine block, radiator and heater core must be flushed before installing new cylinder head and new cylinder head gasket.

If pressure bleeds down, but no leaks or cracks are detected, remove cylinder head assembly and inspect the cylinder head gasket for damage between the oil and engine coolant passages. If cylinder head gasket is damaged, remove and discard cylinder head gasket, and proceed to step 6.

Important Engine block, radiator and heater core must be flushed before installing cylinder head and new cylinder head gasket.

If cylinder head gasket is not damaged, inspect engine blocks for cracks in the oil and engine coolant passages in the cylinder liner area. If cracks are detected, replace engine block. Leave upper radiator hose connected to the radiator. Remove and discard lower radiator hose. Open radiator drain plug. Insert a hose in the upper radiator hose and flush radiator with clean water until clean water flows from the lower radiator hose connection. Remove and discard upper radiator hose. Remove water inlet housing and thermostat and discard thermostat. Remove engine cooling system drain plug, located at the right front of the engine block below the thermostat. Remove and discard water pump. Place shop rags in the exposed cylinder bores. Using a hose, fill the exposed water jacket surrounding the cylinders with clean water until clean water comes out of the thermostat location. Remove shop rags from cylinder head bores and apply a liberal amount of 5W - 30 engine oil to the cylinder liners to help prevent corrosion.

Important Do not install thermostat at this time.

Install water inlet housing to engine. Install engine cooling system drain plug. Install new water pump. Leave inlet heater hose connected to heater core. Remove and discard outlet heater hose. Insert hose into inlet heater hose and flush with clean water until clean water comes out of heater core outlet. Remove and discard inlet heater core hose. Remove and discard coolant recovery hose. Remove coolant recovery reservoir and flush thoroughly with clean water. Install remanufactured or previously removed cylinder head and new cylinder head gasket. Install new radiator, heater and coolant recovery hoses. Change engine oil engine oil filter.

Prepare a mixture of Calgon or equivalent (automatic dishwater detergent), and water at the rate of 59 milliliters (two ounces) (dry measure) to 3.8 Liters (1 gallon) of water. The cooling system holds approximately 7.6 liters (two gallons) of coolant.

Fill the cooling system with the mixture. Run the engine for five minutes.

Drain the cooling system. Repeat Step 29 through 32 until all oil residue is remove from system. Fill the cooling system with clean water. Let the engine run five minutes. Drain the cooling system completely. Install new engine thermostat. Install cylinder block drain plug. Close radiator drain plug.

Important The vehicle must be level when filling with coolant.

Fill the system with coolant. 1991-1996 early vehicle equipped with "Green" Saturn non-phosphate ethylene glycol-base coolant, fill the cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of new Saturn non-phosphate ethylene glycol-base coolant (P/N 21030365, 3.8 Liter [one gallon] container). 1996 interim and 1997 vehicles equipped with "Orange" Saturn DEX-COOL extended-life engine coolant, fill the cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of new Saturn DEX-COOL extended-life engine coolant (P/N 21031164, 3.8 Liter [one gallon] container). Start engine and check for leaks. Fill the coolant recovery reservoir to the full cold line after the engine has run for two or three minutes. Install and tighten cap.

When adding DEXCOOL, Make sure it is mixed at a 50/50 ratio with distilled water. And never add any unless it is DEXCOOL or distiled water. Adding the old green takes away boil protection and returns the coolant to 2-3 year change cycle.

Where is the crank sensor on a '97 Chevy Cavalier?

The Crank sensor is located right above the oil filter (on 2.4) to the left of the starter if looking from the front of the car. Pull the oil filter off. There is a small clip to pull harness out, remove that, then the 10mm bolt that holds that in. The bolt is kinda hard to see and get to, becareful not to strip it out. fairly simple, good luck.

You have a 94 Chevy cavalier and you just replaced the starter now it wants to start but wont could it b the fuel pump?

Double check your coil connection. If it checks there is a test port on the fuel injector rail. You can tell if the fuel pump is operating. If you have the gauge you can make sure the pressure is correct. But I would double check electrical first.
