Air Filters and Intake Manifolds

apply high temp sealant Rtv to threds and under head bolts ( step one head bolts 37 ft lbs) (step 2 then 1/4 turn)

lower intake torque four long bolts at step 1( 66 inch

step 2( 10 ft lbs

then the outer bolts right then left

install upper intake and torque all 14 lb from center out

do not under torque or over torque and make sure you have a accurate torque wrench not one that has been threw hell or drop. these motors are sensitive make it painless the first time

you undo the two front bolts on the top of the cover. You need a 10mm spanner. pull away the air intake pipes. to remove the air filter body from the engine you just pull the whole thing upwards as it is now held at the back on two rubber gromets which slide over two locating pins.

From the front of the engine right hand side second bolt back is #1, #2 is on the left side second from the back, #3 is on the right side second from the back, #4 is on the left second from the front,#5 is on the right side the front bolt,#6 is on the left side the first bolt, #7 is on the right side the back bolt, #8 is on the left side back bolt, #9 is on the right side third from the front, #10 is on the left side fourth from the front, #11 on the right fourth from the front,#12 on the left side third from the front.

this will explain it, all you need a screwdriver, your air filter(cabin) is located behind your glove compartment. you'll need to remove it and there you can reach your filter. total estimated time to replace..i would say about 20 mins... its better than letting the dealership do it for 89bucks (not inc. taxes) = ripoff...

First remove neg connection at battery than serp belt than coolant than alternator than ps pump than alternator bracket and than electrical connectors now blow off all debre from area now valve covers and mount front eng use eng pull tool crank eng forward next pull upper intake and next use vAlve spring tool to remove push rods don't mix them up there not same. Length put back where they came from next remove lower intake clean mate area remove crappy gaskits replace with the metal and silicone style if you use plastic they will leaks agine soon reviese for install about 4-5 hr job rember change oil after job and before restart of engine very imPortant!!!!!! Purge air pocket from coolant

The filter is behind the left headlight, Take the ducting off and get to the filter to change it.

I have a 97 Astro that is leaking. The dealer ship quoted a price of $650. minimum. I know there is a lower and upper manifold gaskets.I'm faced and with cruise control and fuel injection and I am a little aprehensive. But being out of options and low on funds due to uncle sam and cost of living increases and not alot of work I might have to take it on. Any help would be cool. I have been driving GM products for 30 years and have never had a intake manifold gasket blow.

Depends on where you live and the conditions under which you drive. Under normal driving conditions I recommend you change the filter every 30,000 miles. More often if you drive in very dusty conditions.

all bolts torqued to 15-22 ft lbs.

You shouldn't need to take off the intake manifold at all so, to answer your question, no. However, if it the exhaust manifold you mean, the answer is still no. It should be a multi-layered metal gasket and the only reason to replace any gasket is because it is damaged.

Its a Cummins not a Cummings when you figure that out, it might be easier to get help for what you have.

If you're just having the timing belt replaced, it'll cost you about $700. The exact amount depends on your mechanic, of course. However, you should also investigate having other parts associated with the timing belt replaced. This is because Volvo engines (after 1995, I think) use what is called an "interference design." That is, if the timing belt stops (either by breaking or other event) the cam shaft will stop and the valves will be struck by the pistons (this is what they mean by "interference"). The engine is then pretty much gone. You'll need to (1) get a new engine, (2) get your old engine rebuilt, or (3) sell your car. What other parts should be investigated you ask. Well, the pulleys and tensioners (with their bearings) for the timing belt, as a starter, and anything else that runs off the timing belt. Some dealers go so far as to replace the water pump, too. The bill for a major service of this type can run as much as $2000. I've never had a belt go bad, but I have had pulley bearings go. Once I heard the noise and had it checked in time. Once I didn't. The latter cost me a new engine, to the tune of about $5000. (Makes a $2000 investment look pretty good!)
