Alternators

An alternator is an old term for electric generator that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy producing alternating current. Alternators are mainly used for recharging batteries and to power electrical loads of vehicles.

Is it ok to put WD-40 on an alternator belt?

Absolutely NOT! WD-40 is a lubricant. The last thing you want to put on a drive belt is a lubricant. If the belt is making a noise, it is either loose or worn out.

If your 96 Nissan won't start and when you turn the key there is a rapid clicking noise in the engine-How can you tell if it's the starter or a switch?

The clicking noise is most likely relay chatter. If you turn the key and hear a clicking noise and the engine does not crank, this usually a sign of a low battery (or a short). Check the battery first. If the battery is good there may be a short in the electrical system. Start with the ignition switch. Remove the four screws on the bottom of the steering column. Then lift off the top half of the steering column. Inspect the wiring and try to tighten any loose connections. Make sure the pos. & neg. battery leads are in good order (especially the neg. lead.)

How do you replace an alternator on a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo with air conditioning?

i have a 1993 Cherokee and you need to remove the battery holder to pull the alternator out its just unhooking the wires and and the two bolts. you need to find out how to loosen the belt tensioner

I have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee with air. Its quite a lot more effort than this. I just did it and it took me slightly under 3 hours.

You'll need a 15mm, 13mm, 10mm and 8mm sockets and a 3 inch and 6 inch socket extender. You will need the same sized for regular wrenches as well.

The problem is available room. You have to take out the battery and the battery holder (15mm nuts), then remove the fan housing and then the fan (4 13mm nuts that are hard to get off if the serpantine belt is not tight) - the fan is in the way and you won't be able to get the alternator out if its inplace.

Next, you need to remove tension on the belt - this is done with a 13mm socket and wrench (access is tight on some bolts). Remove the bolt in the back of the power stearing pump assembly, then down below the pump you'll find another to loosen (don't remove). the loosen the one at the top fo the power stearing pump - you'll find a bolt under the pump where you can loosen the tension on the belt. This may be stiff and will require a 6 inch extension (the air filter and water hoses are in the way)

Once the belt is loose, you can take the 2 bolts that hold the alternator off (15mm). There is are 2 cables attached. One to an insulated post (10mm socket) and another one that is ground and some other alternator connections. the cables are attached to the block via a 13mm nut - remove this and you can pull the alternator out (I had to wedge it out with a broom handle). remove the cables, and clean the contacts on them with some 150 grit emery cloth. Pull the Alternator out and put the new one down and re-attach the cables. You'll need an 8mm socket for 2 of these nuts.

Slide the Alternator in and get the bolts in (its a tight fit on the engine).

Reassemble in the reverse order (getting the bolts back on the fan assembly took me quite a while).

I spent $115 on a the new alternator.

If you do it yourself, approx. $160.00 from your local auto parts dealer. It's a very simple procedure that takes less than 1 hour. Note that their could be a lead time for the Alternator so order ahead.

Why isn't the alternator charging the battery on your 1990 Chevy S-10 4.3 liter v-6 5 speedThe alternator and battery are brand new?

You might check to see if your vehicle has an external voltage regulator. Some voltage regulators are in the alternator, some are not. Another simple solution might be to check your fuse panel for a blown fuse, and make sure all the wires are tight at the connections.

How do you replace the alternator water pump power steering belt on a 1992 Nissan Stanza?

Not sure if the 92 is the same as the 91, but on the 91 you need to loosen the adjusting idler on the alternator on top and the a/c idler from the bottom. remove the a/c belt & install the alt. belt, make sure your route is correct between the two guide as the belt goes up to the idler... hope that helps.

Why is alternating current used for domestic purposes?

Alternating current is easier to distribute than direct current, because alternating current can be raised or lowered in voltage by a transformer. This allows very high voltages to be used in long distance transfer of electricity, which is then stepped down several times before being supplied to the end user. As the voltage is increased in a circuit, the current, as measured in amperes, decreases for a given load. This allows the use of lighter wire to transmit large amounts of electricity.

How do you tell if the alternator is bad in a 2000 jeep Cherokee sport?

Borrow a digital DC voltmeter, attach the meter to the positive and negative battery posts, if the battery is healthy and fully charged it should read 12.68 volts, now start the engine and monitor the voltmeter, if the battery is fully charged and the alternator is healthy the meter should read 14.2 volts (give or take .3). If the voltage fails to reach that goal the alternator is probably faulty.
