Car Starting Problems

Some of the common car starting problems stem from a discharged battery, a bad fuel pump (or no fuel), a weakened starter motor, or a broken electrical connection. Checking each part will help troubleshoot why the car won’t start.

How can i fix my 94 Mazda protege got flooded and cranks but won't start?

Flooded in the river or flooded by gas? Any "check engine lights"? Full gas pedal depression is the normal way to clear gas flooding or first remove the spark plugs and blow out the excess gas.

How can you start your car if the starter is bad?

Manual cars can be started with a bad starter due to the ability to roll start the car. Automatic transmission cars are not so lucky.

To roll start a manual car all you need to do is put the car in gear with the key in the "on" position, push in the clutch, get the car to roll, then quickly release the clutch. The transmission will slam into the engine and force it to turn. Don't forget to push the clutch back in once it starts or the car will stall.

How do you get the starter out of a 1997 Rodeo?

Replacing a 1997 Rodeo starter"The starter on our 1997 rodeo was replaced a few months ago and our mechanic (also a family friend) had to lift the entire engine to replace the starter. He wasn't thrilled but it only cost us $300 to have the work done - that included the price of the starter."

$300 is probably not too bad of a price.

I recently had to replace the starter on my 1998 Isuzu Rodeo as it was getting the common "click click" when I turned the key. I picked up a remanufactured starter for $200 with a $50 refund for returning the old one. These are my steps for replacing my starter, but I assume close years will be similar.

Before starting, I recommend you leave the vehicle on a hard surface rather than putting it on a lift or jacking the entire vehicle up. It will cause less complications in later steps.

1. Remove the front left tire and the mudflap behind the tire. This will allow you to reach some of the starter wires and rotate it a bit easier.

2. Disconnect all the starter wires through the wheel-well that you cleared, and remove the two bolts from the starter from below. You may find it easier to gain access to the starter by removing a few heat shields by the exhaust manifold. The starter should now be free. You can rotate it and pull on it all you want, but it's impossible for it to come out.

3. Place a jack underneath the corner of the oil pan and start cracking it up. The goal is to lift the engine enough to allow you enough room for the starter to come out. Alternatively, you could try removing the three bolts from the exhaust manifold to allow yourself enough room, but I was unable to get mine to budge. It was a tight fit to get mine in and out, but I only had to raise the engine 1/2" to 3/4". I also had to push back on the exhaust slightly.

4. The starter should pull out with the sprocket facing downward, and the solenoid on the top of the unit, and towards the driver's door. As you can see, it's a tight fit.

5. Install the new one by reversing the steps, and good luck. It only took a friend and myself about 6 hours to figure these four steps out. Hopefully it'll save you some time.

When the contacts on my son's 97 wore out (2 1/2years ago) here's what I did-not that it's the right way.

1. Bought new contacts online for about $5 (I think it was at sherco?).

2. Diconnected the wires and mounting bolts. Dissassembled the solenoid from the starter while the unit was still in the car.

4. Removed the solenoid and the starter as separate pieces. I didn't disconnecting the manifold. I may have removed the shield- can't remember. I didn't do anything with the motor mounts or jacking up the engine.

6. Replaced the contacts in the starter on the bench and tested the unit. You might be able to find a different thread to lead you through this somewhere

7. Put the starter and the solenoid back into the car seperately. Assembled them together in place and then installed the mounting screws and the wires. I remember it being a little tricky to keep all the parts together while I was putting them back in - a little temporary tape might help.

This was a dirty job and took 4 or 5 hours but most of the time was spent figuring out this might work and trying it. The starter rebuild was easy in my case since it only needed the contacts. It has been working great every since -with only the $5 worth of parts.

I find those answers funny.....Remove the exhaust pipe from the truck Then you have loads of room. Removed the engine HAHAHA...Cut the exhaust bolts at the bottom where they join to the Y-pipe Remove the 3 bolts at the manifold and there you are

Is it the alternator if the car wont turn over and you only hear a clicking noise when you turn the key to start a Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable?

Battery, or starter is bad. Now the battery could be dead due to a defective alternator. Clean the battery terminals, and charge the battery fully. Attempt to start the car. If if will not start, suspect a bad starter or starter solenoid. If it starts, check the voltage at the battery. Should be 13.5 to 15 volts. If less than 13 volts, suspect a defective alternator. Drive it to most auto parts stores and have the charging system load tested to be sure.

To check the alternator:I agree with the previous answer...however I would like to assist you in checking your alternator... While your car is running (after you fix the battery or starter obviously) pull the positive wire to the battery completely off...if the car stays running, your alternator is fine...However if the car dies, your alternator is faulty... Real simple...

More Information:

The clicking noise you can hear is the starter solenoid trying to engage this would mean your starter solenoid has packed up change the starter motor and it should be fine you may need to charge your battery depending on how long it has been sitting or how many times you have tried to start your car.

You may have a loose or corroded ground connection. Not just the battery ground but the engine to chassis ground. You may also have a bad battery cable. If you see swelling on any part of the cable, replace it. Make sure the connections are clean and tight. Did you replace the starter solenoid with the starter, or is it a separate item? If the solenoid is separate from the starter, it is probably bad. It is unlikely that the ignition switch is bad, but possible.

Truck won't start because battery is dead and there is a clicking in fuse box?

Are you positive the battery is dead? Have you tried to jump start it? That clicking could be the starter relay.

Trunk lock clicking but car doesn't start?

Sorry, but your question makes no sense at all. What does a trunk lock have to do with your car starting or not.

99 Chevy Tahoe i try to start it but no luck it just cranks and cranks its getting fuel to engine there is spark from the plugs and i also tried spraying starter fluid into the injecter?

A lot of people will tell you that it's the fuel pump which is inside of the fuel tank. If you change that and it still wont start then it is the fuel pump wiring harness. 99% of the time this is what it usually is. The wiring harness plugs in to the top of the fuel pump. I would just change both while you have the fuel tank down to save yourself time. You can get both at any auto parts store.

You have fuel at the engine and there is spark from the plugs? If you have fuel, air, spark and it is in time, it has to run. You have spark in the wire, have you pulled the plugs and checked them. They may be fouled or worn out. Timing could be off, but it should at least try to start, backfire or something. Check the plugs and get back to me if that isn't it.

How do you test a ignition coil with circuit diagram?

You cannot test it with a diagram. You will need a multimeter to test the coil. Click the link.

Why does my car not start with a brand new battery?

Could be,The new battery is discharged.

The battery cables are faulty or corroded.

The starter is faulty.

The starter solenoid is faulty.

The starter relay is faulty.

The neutral safety switch is faulty.

The ignition switch is faulty.

If the starter is cranking the engine but the engine fails to start and run there could be many more reasons. Give us more details.

How do you change a starter on a 1991 Chevy Caprice?

First disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery for safety.

Then verify that transmission is in park and parking brake is firmly set.

Block the rear wheels, then raise and support the front of the car by the frame until at a comfortable height to work under.

At the bottom front of the transmission is a semicircular cover over the flywheel. Remove the four bolts (3/8" head I believe) and the cover.

Remove the nuts securing the wires to the starter at the two studs. Then loosen the two vertical starter mounting bolts with 9/16th inch heads. Remove any shims, then remove the two large bolts and the starter.

Set the new starter in place and snug up the two large bolts. Measure starter to flywheel clearance. The starter should include clearance measuring instructions, but if not present I believe the spec is 3/16". Install shims if necessary to increase clearance.

Tighten the two mounting bolts, then position the wires and tighten the nuts.

Connect the negative battery connection. Start the engine, then shut it off while listening for noise. Disconnect the negative battery connection. A grinding noise usually indicates excessive flywheel to starter clearance or damaged flywheel. A metallic screaming banshee noise indicates too little clearance. Add or remove shims as needed.

Reinstall flywheel cover, then lower car to ground and reconnect battery.

Set clock and radio presets.

Will a starter slowly go bad or is it instant Motor started turning over slower and slower over a couple of days and I don't know if its the starter or battery?

yes that's exactly what happens, the starter can get slower and slower over a couple days and then it won't start at all. you won't be able to "jump start" battery either. starter must be replaced..if u can find a used or rebuilt one, they're jst as good. new starter approx. $90-$130. used around $40
