Car Starting Problems

Some of the common car starting problems stem from a discharged battery, a bad fuel pump (or no fuel), a weakened starter motor, or a broken electrical connection. Checking each part will help troubleshoot why the car won’t start.

92 geo storm engine cranks no spark?

Check the ignition circuit in the Storm. Start by checking the crank position sensor, then the coil pack to find the lack of spark.

Can anyone show me a 1997 GMC Jimmy engine diagram or explain to me the location of the coil pack?

Typically Chevrolet coil packs in the 90's are located on top of the distributor in the center. There is a cover in the middle of the distributor cap which is usually held on by 2 or 4 screws. (You should not have to remove the entire distributor cap to access it) Then the coil is held in place by either 2 screws, one on the center of each side or 4 screws, one in each corner. Then you just have to unplug the two wire clips on the front. Pay close attention when removing the coil, when you lift it out there will be a rubber pad underneath which will have a small bit that has a spring attached, it is called a carbon brush or a carbon bit or something like that but just be sure to remember how it is sitting in there. I believe the spring should point up but I can't remember if it sits above or below the rubber pad. When you install the new coil you may have to bend the connectors on the end of the positive and negative wires coming off of the coil pack. Some run straight in line and some run at a 90 degree angle to each other, but the new clips are always straight and if your connectors are set at a 90 degree angle you will have to bend the new clip. Just look at the connectors on the old coil pack and you can figure it whether you have to bend the new ones or not. Why would the starter in a 2000 Toyota Camry not get voltage?

I have not worked on a Camry; however many cars have a fuse/relay or a fuse link (special fuse wire)between the battery and the starter in case of a short circuit. If this is blown ,no power will be delivered to the starter.Check your under hood fuse box for a START cicuit( it might be called something else. I am never afraid to go down to the local dealer, walk back to the shop, and ask to speak to the service manager/mechanic. They are familiar with these problems and will answer your question.

A weak spark can be caused by a faulty ignition coil, or perhaps bad spark plug wires.

Can starter fluid damage your engine?

If you use very much and very often, potentially, yes.

Occasional use seems to not be much of a problem.

Your radio and lights come on but your car won't start its a 1991 dodge Dynasty why?

If you are saying that you have reason to believe that the battery is charged, yet the starter won't crank the engine, it could be: starter, Neutral/park lockout switch, Bad electrical connection or Keyswitch.

Would a soleniod circuit for the transmission make a car not start?

It might depend on the vehicle and transmission in question, but usually a transmission fault, of any kind, will have little or no impact on the engine's ability to start. With a transmission solenoid problem, you may not be able to make the car move, but it should still start.

About the only, transmission related problem that would prevent the engine from starting would be a faulty neutral safety switch, or maybe a faulty brake or clutch switch, which can definitely prevent you from starting the engine, even when working properly, that's their function. If the neutral safety switch is faulty, you may be able to start the engine with the transmission shifter in a position other than Park or Neutral, or not at all. Normal function allows engine starts in only Park or Neutral, and for automatics, sometimes only with the brake pedal depressed as well. On manual transmissions the neutral safety switch allows engine start only with the clutch pedal depressed.

**Note: some older vehicle models may not be equipped with neutral safety switches, brake switches, or clutch switches.

Why would a 1996 Camry not start after replacing the old battery with new one and everything works but car won't start?

We have a 95 Camry and had the same problem when changing our starter, and had to disconnect the battery cables. Check on the floorboard underneath the emergency brake pedal, there may be a small toggle swith. Try flipping the switch, and it should start. The Toyota dealership told us it was what we had to do to ours, and it started afterwards. good luck!
