I have the problem now of my engine light on. I was told that it was my first converter. The dealer said that It would cost me 2000.00 to get it fixed. Ia m shoping around to see. But, the cheapest price that I have found so far for the first converter is 500.00. Do not go to the dealer. They will charge you over 800.00 for it. Could be the Gas cap Mine was loose when the Check engine light came on.Once the condition clears it will take 30 starting cycles to clear saving money on the dealer clearing it. Also you might have a Pre-converter going out.(about $350) Or you might have on 02 sensor going out.(about $20)

Check for vacuum hose leaks under the hood, causing the car to run too rich. The Mechanic may have knocked a hose loose or leaned on a hose causing a crack at the connectors while he was changing the belt. It's not difficult to replace an air hose. Take the old hose to a shop and match it up with a new hose. You might have to cut it to fit. If it has a 90 degree bend in the hose, you might just be better off going to a dealer and getting an original replacement with the same 90 degree bend. Be sure and buy band new hose connectors while you are there. Also, Autozone might be able to match the hose up with another off the shelf if you bring it in. They can cut it to the correct length, if they can just match the hose bend with another hose.

Have the problem repaired and they will reset the light. If you DIY then disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes. If that does not reset the light you will have to have it reset with an OBD2 scan tool.

I've had this problem a couple of times with my 96 Ford Explorer.

Either:

1. The car needs a tune up

2. A sensor is out and the car needs a tune up

3. Something is wrong with idle . . . needs to be checked

The real answer is that you need to get to a mechanic asap . . .

When the idle was loose, the car would die, but when a tune up was needed it ran rough without fully dying . . .

When your car is serviced at a non-vw garage or at home by yourslef, the ecu doesnt know its had a service, so the service indicator stays on. To reset it:

-(with the ignition off and keys out) press and hold the mile reset button

-turn ignition on

-wait until the display goes like '--'

if you look in your car manual it will tell you how to do it, you have to push a button in where your fuses are and hold it down and then push it after you hear the door chime noises but your manual will tell you how many times to do this and how to.

BUT... if your check engine light came on, theres usually a reson why because these cars have sensores that sences things wrong with the car, so if you havent gone to a garage and had your car hooked up to there computer, then i would get that done first before you mess with resetting the light, because there computer will tell you exactly wants wrong with it. if you have brought the car to get looked at and they didn't reset the light then you could bring the car back and have them do it because they should have done it then.

FISH SMELL COULD BE A BAD HEATER CORE, THIS WOULD CAUSE YOU NOT TO HAVE HEAT IN THE CAR , BUT IT MIGHT NOT CAUSE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO COME ON UNLESS MAYBE CAR IS LOW ON COOLANT. A misfire on a car with a catalytic converter will overheat and destroy the converter due to unburned fuel in the exhaust. on a car without a catalytic converter, it will still wash the cylinder with unburned fuel and break down the oil, but not do any serious damage in the short term.

disconnect battery for 15 mins...if it come back on there is a reason for the light being on...if so google vectra management light paperclip...hope this helps

A code that indicates a problem with your tranmission. Ususally causes a hard shift from 1st to second gear. Need to have a transmission expert look at the vehicle. Sometimes the transmission may need rebuilt if damage has occurred.

Your gas cap wasn't tightened hard enough. (Three clicks) I just took this to my mechanic who is a retired engineer and her figured it out n about 2 sec. Unlike the other mechanics I've seen.
If gas is evaporating out of the system it will come on. So tighten your gas cap after you put gas into your car.
