You can't fix the pump, only replace it. It is located in the fuel tank. I know of no online repair manual. Go to any Auto Parts store and purchase a Hayne's or Chilton's repair manual. Around $15

1973-86 C/K and 1987-91 R/V GM Pickup, Suburban, and Fullsize Blazer Fusible links are attached to the large starter lug along with the battery cable.
They run from the main harness on the firewall down to the starter "battery" lug, along with the "start" and "power with start" wires, through a wire protector attached to one or more bellhousing bolts.
Original GM fusible links can be identified by a large diameter molded rubber or PVC ring on the wire.
Why would a 1997 Astro not start when it rains?
I dealt with this problem on a 1999 Astro for almost a year. I replaced the rotor, cap wires, ignition control module, and the crank shaft sensor. I finally figured out that it was a defective ignition coil (would arc out in wet or humid weather. Pretty easy to change. Only costs about $50.
AnswerI am guessing the car (van) runs fine when it is not raining?Things that it �Could� be (this is not a complete list):
- Bad, Cracked, or Cheap distributor cap.
- Contaminated MAF sensor
- Bad O2 sensor(s)
- Bad or Cheap spark plugs
- Bad or Cheap plug wires
Explanation: A bad or cracked distributor cap would allow moisture to get into the cap, normally this causes backfiring � but not always. It also interferes with the rest of the spark circuit � the wires and plugs are basically the same thing, from the excess water in the air. The OBDII system does not use a BARO sensor to determine air density or humidity, it uses a learned routine from the MAF, MAP, and O2 sensors to determine the figure.
This is the exact problem that I have with my current 1997 van. I have 20 years experience at working on cars, am ASAE certified for computer electronics, and I still do not know �yet.�
In My Situation: There is no backfiring, and there are no trouble codes present. The O2 sensors have been replaced and there is no apparent contamination of the MAF sensor. The distributor cap has been replaced (twice) the second time it was coated with an electrical sealer(outside only), and sealer (electrical RTV) was placed at the base; the Coil and internal components of the distributor have been replaced as well. That does not mean that these things are not bad in your situation, but if they are not you are in for a long diagnostic in finding the trouble.
UpdateThere seems to be a chance that rain can run into the Air Temperature Sender on the air intake hose. If there is no seal or a bad seal on the hood it allows water to run down the inside of the fire wall. The placement of the sensor is right in line with a leak of this nature, and it points up so that it can catch water. This sensor is a simple resistor that reacts to temperature, so any change in resistance (like conductivity of water) changes its readings.Location: The air intake hose is approximately 4� in diam. And runs from the air intake box (where the air filter is) to the intake manifold, this hose also houses the MAF sensor. On this hose just under the firewall is a small plug with 2 wires (the plug should point up) and this is the ATS.
Solution: I would NOT suggest using any form of sealer on this sensor, or the plug. It could make it impossible to replace or interfere with its function. I would NOT suggest trying to �turn� the hose; First it may crack as it is now formed because of age and heat, Second, it could adversely affect the MAF sensor. We placed a small piece of rubber weather-stripping on the firewall just to the right of the Windshield wiper motor. Purchase a small amount of 3/8 inch automotive weather-stripping and some weather-strip adhesive from your local parts house. Use a green scrubbing pad (that you would use for dishes) and lightly scrub that area with a grease fighting dishwashing soap. Thoroughly dry the area, then cut and glue the weather-strip to deflect water away from this sensor. I have not had this problem since doing this.
New Info from another owner- I own a 2002 GMC Safari and found that my catalytic converters were clogged and this is what was causing it to be very sluggish and I could not go much over 35-45MPH. This may have also contributed to hard starting. I did replace my spark plugs, rotor, wires and caps (what a nightmare) and starting was a little easier (and this was before the catalytic converter replacement.

i have seen many fuel level sending units go bad in the fuel tank. The little fingers on them wear off. If this is occurring in park or neutral with the fuel sloshing, it is a normal condition due to the buffer being disengaged in the cluster.
- edit by jwko - if the tank was not full of gas and the guage went to full could also be a bad ground. Check grounds ( there will be several ) so you will have to look close.

Assumeing you are at the rear of your van, if you crawl under the rear bumper you will see the rear axil, the center of that axil in the differential(round part)you should see a bolt or (plug) towards the top left side facing fprward the vehical this is where you can add differential fluid you want to fill it just below the leval of the hole.....
How do you replace the water pump on a 1997 Chevy Astro?
First you take the air induction vent off from over the radiator shroud. It just pops off from the shroud. Next you look down beside the radiator and you will see bolts that you have to take loose. The radiator shroud is a 2 piece shroud. Once you get the top shroud out you can take the idler pulley loose and take the serpentine belt loose and take the fan blade off. You will be surprised with the room in there once you get that out of the way. I changed mine in about an hour. While you have all that out checked your idler pulley tension because after i replaced the water pump the idler pulley went bad and i had to replaced the serpentine belt again.
Because the ECU on those shuts off the fuel when you let off the gas rather than just scaling back. Also could be bad idle controller, especially if it's surging. Check for vacuum leaks or leaks in the turbo also. It shouldn't bog down when you make it work, should get up and go. Probably your idle controller or your ECU. This sounds like the same issue i had with my 92 talon tsi and the first thing i did was checking for vacuum leaks and there were a couple but nothing changed, i figured out the idling issue was the idle position switch next to were you can rev up your engine under the hood. This can be fixed by adjusting the nut on it. When my talon was bogging down all i had to do was change the bad fuel filter and make sure there is no fuel leaks because that can cause the bogging too

Because many more Camrys are sold than Avalons, replacement parts are also readily available, at lower prices than the Avalon parts (they are not the same). I got my replacement handle from the local Toy dealer.

Requires removal of: Fan shroud, serpentine belt, fan, water pump, timing cover, crank pulley(s). Requires crank pulley puller/installer tools. Requires timing gear puller to remove crank gear. Replace chain and gears together. Replace with all-metal gears, not composite sets. On this vehicle it is recommended to replace the timing cover each time it is removed.

in my 88 astro van I had to completely break out the back handle to first get the door open then I was able to remove interior door cover to do thr replacement. in my 99 asto van I was able to remove the interior cover to open the door then replace the handle.

Try treating it with Seafoam or Techron fuel system cleaners. You can buy both at most auto parts stores. Follow the directions on the can.
