EGR Systems

When the temperature in the combustion chamber becomes extremely hot, nitrous oxides are formed, which then turn into smog. In order to reduce such occurrence, the exhaust gas recirculation system minimizes the temperature in the combustion chamber.

Can a bad EGR valve cause a catalytic converter to fail?

Short answer: YES!

Longer answer: The EGR valve is designed to recirculate some exhaust gas into the intake, in order to cool combustion temperatures somewhat. If the combustion temps exceed 1100 degrees (actually common in gasoline engines) then oxides of nitrogen are produced. these gases are what we see as visible smog. If the EGR valve fails, it can lead to very high exhaust temps which can gradually melt the insides of the catalytic converter. If a failed EGR is combined with a lean fuel mixture, or over-advanced ignition timing, the melting of the converter happens very quickly.

Where to find and how to replace a DPFE sensor on a Taurus Sable?

the dpfe is a small metal box on top of and behind the engine. It should be about 3in. wide by 2in. tall by 1in. deep. It has two screws that hold it on on the left and right side. There are two hoses that connect at the bottom of the sensor and one wire harness that plugs in. To replace, simply pull off the hoses and wire harness and unscrew the screws. When replacing, make sure you put the correct hoses in place (one has a smaller hole than the other). It is best to replace with an OEM part, but cheaper plastic ones can be used, although the don't fit very well.

How do you change the EGR valve on a 1996 Saturn and where is it located?

Hey TammyIt is at the rear of the intake manifold and is that big shinny round thing. Remove the vac line then the 2 bolts that hold it on. Clean where it mounts and install the new one. GoodluckJoe

ACTUALLY IT DOES NOT HAVE A VACUUM LINE TO IT AND IS RIGHT BESIDE THE BIG AIR TUBE THAT GOES TO THE ENGINE. iT HAS A PLUG ON TOP OF IT WITH 4 OR 5 WIRES GOING INTO IT. TWO BOLTS HOLD IT ON tHEY ARE 10MM SOCKET BOLTS. vERY EASY TO CHANGE

Once off, usually you can just use some carb cleaner to make sure it is free and screw it back on so you don't have to buy a new one.

What are the symptoms of a stuck EGR valve?

could have: Check engine light, rough run, stall, poor fuel miliage. Also loss of power and pinging sound under loads such as hills or acceleration. Carbon build up causes this valve to stick in higher milage vehicles especially. Eowawa

How much does it cost to replace freon?

Freon (R12) is a refrigerant that started being phased out in the early 90s. The last I knew it was selling for about $50.00 a pound and a car usually takes about 2 pounds. So a simple evacuation, then recharge may cost about $150.00. This however probably wouldn't include diagnosis of the reason why it needs recharging in the first place (ie a leak) so replacing alone will most likely lead to another trip to the garage to charge it and actually find the leak. If the car is 1992 or newer it will almost definitely be equipt with the new refrigerant R134 which costs about $18.00 a pound making the repair that much cheaper. Also if it is equipt with an R12 system the best recomendation is to have it retrofitted to R134. A simple and fairly inexpensive job.

What causes black smoke to come for the tailpipe of a 1994 Lincoln Town Car?

Black smoke usually indicates an overly rich fuel/air mixture. In other words the engine is getting too much fuel or it is not being burned properly. Blue smoke is oil burning. White smoke is coolant in the combustion chamber.

Would a PCV valve cause nox emissions to be high I changed the egr vavle and still failed the test. Do you have any other suggestions. I really need to pass l993 altima.?

Have you tried a fuel additive, Like techtron? You're suppose to put it in and drive out a full tank of gas. Or clean out the hose to the EGR valve.Or maybe, a new catylitic converter?

What causes a 16.5 hp Briggs mower to die when you increase the idle?

not getting enough gas due to a couple things.

1 the filter has some stuff in it and blocking the gas that your engine needs when you bring up the throttle.

2 sticking float within the carb same idea the float is not going up enough to allow more fuel again to run the engine at a higher rpm those are the 2 things i'd check

Does a 2004 5.4l 3v Triton have a egr valve?

Some VCT(variable cam timing) system applications can eliminate the need for an external exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. The elimination of the EGR system is accomplished by controlling the overlap time between the intake valve opening and exhaust valve closing. The 5.4L 3V engine is equipped with a VCT system that allows Exhaust gases into the engine by overlapping valves instead of the use of a EGR valve and related components.

Can an engine still run withe the EGR vacuum solenoid not in working conditions?

Yes, the engine can still run with the EGR vacuum solenoid not in the working condition.

Where is the EGR Valve on a 2004 Ford Free star?

Right in front of the air intake when facing the engine. Left side of engine, tube coming up from exhaust. The EGR has one cannon plug on the same harness as the throttle position sensor and two vacuum lines (one red and one black) both inside a black sleeve. There is a removable black cover that has a foam air filter that can freeze when there is condensation present.

Would the egr valve also cause a 1994 silverado 5.7 to miss?

yes Yes, if the exhaust gas recirculation valve is faulty, the truck will sound like it is missing, but to a mechanic it may sound like a rough idle or a vaccuum leak. I would recommend changing the EGR valve as a process of elimination, being that it isn't a big ticket item.

Where is the EGR valve located on 94 S10 Blazer what does the inside look like Is there a screen over one hole and a plunger on the other If I looked at the right thing there's no screen on mine?

Screen is on the gasket. If the screen is no longer intact then the gasket needs replaced. The crap Gas that we are forced to use is the main concern for this problem, not the manufacturer. Clean the EGR, replace the gasket, with a screen. If more trouble, the passage has to be cleaned. Lack of tune up is also a leading cause to this malfunction. High test gas is not the answer. Your truck can run on low grade fuel, yet a dose of Sea Foam on every other fill up or so, at least twice per oil change, can help out a lot.

What causes Rough idle and engine shaking problems?

Bad spark plug?
Bad plug wire?
Bad valve?*
Bad piston?* Do a compression check to check engine internal condition

How do you replace n electronic egr valve on a 91 Pontiac firebird 3.1 liter engine?

Remove the wiring from the top of the EGR then unbolt it at the bottom of the EGR system.

You may need to replace the gasket after replacing the EGR itself

Where is the egr valve on Mercedes sprinter?

The EGR Valve is located on the top front of the engine. It is part of the throttlebody.

What are the Australian emission standards?

Depends on what sort of vehicle your driving, but most of them are to EU regulations.

You can check them out at this website;

http://www.dieselnet.com/standards/au/

and because you wont know what the EU standards are, you can check them out here;

http://www.dieselnet.com/standards/eu/ld.php

But can't seem to find any recent emission standards on motorcycles.

Hope that helps you out anyways.

Show you an image of a EGR solenoid for a dodge caravan?

If you need a picture of a EGR valve, go to www.advanceauto.com and go through the engine replacement parts, I believe it would be under emissions, can't remember, but you can get a picture from there.

You have a 1998 mustang the idle is erratic how do you fix this?

some times simple things kill us when these problems arise check all the easy stuff first. check for air leaks old vacuum hoses that are cracked, a tune up may be in order check and clean the idle air valve, run a compresson test you may have a burned valve, one that drove me crazy on a gmc van i once had was the gasket around the egr valve was bad allowing air to get in it caused the van to idle rough and shut off at stops it ran great once it came off idle though air leaks is bad to do this if they are small. its hard to say just start with these things.
