Locks and latches are parts of a door. While the latch ensures that the door stays in a closed position to prevent it from opening, lock prevents the door from being opened without a matching key.

How do you fix a 97 cavalier passenger door car lock after slim gem used to open it Now the key just keeps on turning in the lock but the door will not unlock from the outside?

Probably the rod that goes from the lock to the handle got seperated. It'll be hard but take the panel off and play around. A flashlight and mirror will help. It'll take a while but it'd be worth it. Stick you hand up in there and try to feel around for any loose rods or anything else for that matter. If you feel something that just seems to 'dangle' that's probably the source. Nothing in there should have that much 'play'. Otherwise it wouldn't be there. I'd rattle too much.

How do you fix a car trunk lock that seems to have shifted upward?

I don't know if this is the problem you are having, but if your trunk won't latch properly because the latch won't reach the U-shaped hook it latches onto, it may be that it is the hook rather than the latch that has moved. I had this problem with my car. The hook, which is connected to the car with two screws, had moved down over time so that the latch would no longer reach it. Even though the latch was working fine, the trunk wouldn't close because there was too much distance between the latch and the hook. I solved the problem on my car by simply loosening the screws on the hook, sliding the hook up and retightening the screws. .

How do you open broken tailgate?

There are 3 or 4 bolts on the inside of the tail gate. Remove them and the handle should come out. It should be atached to 2 rods that go to the locking mechanism. More than likely one of the small plastic keepers has broken and the rod has come off from the handle. To open the tailgate, simply pull inward on these rods. The small plastic keepers and the plastic bezel around the handle (which is subject to breaking when removed) can be found at any parts house. The clips are usually $2 for an assortment pack and the bezel (which is subject to breaking when removed) is about $15.

How does car central locking system work?

The central locking is controlled by an electronic device called the central locking control unit that is bascially a relay. There are normally 4 wires that go to each door. Two of the wires connect to the lock mechanism and tell the central locking control unit whether the doors are locked or not. The other two wires connect to the actuator which can either take the form of a motor or an electro magnet. The Central locking control unit connects these wires in one direction to lock and the opposite direction to unlock the doors.

Most modern cars also have a remote sensor that detects the signal from a remote key fob. This send a radio or IR signal to a detector which then connects to the central locking control unit to tell the car to lock or unlock. This uses a coded signal that is unique to that particular key fob.
