Locks and Latches

Locks and latches are parts of a door. While the latch ensures that the door stays in a closed position to prevent it from opening, lock prevents the door from being opened without a matching key.

Doors are locked key wont work how do you open door on 2000 jetta door?

A professional would use a tool called a "slim jim". This tool, which resembles a hack saw blade, is inserted between the glass and the door frame. It is used to snag the lock mechanism forcing it open.

Best bet though is to call a professional.

How do you remove the door lock solenoid on a 1991 Bronco?

First, remove the door panel. You have to unplug the switches and the door handle. Once the door panel is removed, plug the switch for the window and roll it back up. If you look at the part of the door that faces the rear, you'll see what looks like a rivet close to the bottom. It's about the size of a dime and has what looks like a hole in the center. I had to center punch mine first to remove the center if the peice left over once installed. After it's removed, if it's there, drill the rivet. That's what holds the door lock solenoid. Once it's loose, unplug it and take it out. Be careful, some of the window track parts and door itself have some sharp edges. I didn't replace mine because I didn't want electric lock on my door. I guess it's one of those things that I fear if I decide to go into the deep pond. :-) Hope this helps!!

Why does your car beep when you lock and unlock?

Cars beep when you lock and unlock it so people will know if it actually worked (locked or unlocked).

Rear door latch on 2000 gmc safari will not open?

There are two rods within the door. One of them has disengaged from the door latch actuator bar which is triggered when you push the door-open button. You can get to the rods without worrying about opening the back door.

First, remove the centrally located door handle. Carefully pry off the bolt covers on each end of the handle and remove the bolts. Second, remove the four screws holding the window trim in place. The trim will be held in place with metal clips around the window (you can't see them). Pry the trim loose carefully after removing the screws and remove it.

You should now see an opening with the rear wiper motor and door latch rods in view. Look to see if one of the rods is "hanging loose". If so, you've found the problem. You should also see a vertical but somewhat tilted actuator in the center of the apparatus with a hole for the rod empty. Life the end of the rod and push it back into the hole until is snaps. The snap is passive, not much to it. Finally, check with your local GMC dealer prior to this work and see if you can get a new clip (if needed) to attach to the rod end you just pushed back into the actuator hold. Reassemble and you're done.

Really not too bad a job. Good luck.

How do you release the hood of a 1985 front-wheel drive Cadillac Sedan DeVille to replace the hood release cable?

first thing you do is get yourself a pair of needlenose pliers with the cutter on them then lay down under the front of the car. you will see the cable to the hood release from underneath the front of the car. reach the pliers up and cut the cable housing but not all the way through it, so dont squeeze too hard when you cut. after you snipped through the housing not the cable, reach back up with the pliers where you made the cut and pull down towards the ground and the hood will release. j to the izzo

How do you replace the door lock actuator on a 2003 Civic driver's door?

lower window

To Remove door panel

pry off cover on handle, two screws beneath. pull out on door lever, release linkage, unplug door lock connector. Reomove two screws under armrest. release plastic button clip near mirror (pop center bit out carefully with pin or pick). Pop off mirror cover. You can either leave switch assembly in door and carefully unplug wires once it's off. To remove it, you release it via flat scredriver up thru pry hole in armrest below aft edge of switch panel. (little square hole that you see if you look straight up)

Carefully pry/pull panel off, unplug connectors for rear glass switch window/mirror switches, release two tiedowns that tether wiring harness to door. (whew)

Next, pop off retaining plug and carefully peel back plastic door liner.

Using impact driver or very strong/big bit screwdriver with much pressure, remove three screws that hold door latch to door. (you will strip the heads of these screws unless you apply very strong pressure towards door hinge and use the proper size Phillips bit....they are very tight). Leave one screw in loosely until you are ready to extract it.

Unplug door lock actuator connectors, pop off door lever attachment and linkage guide for internal lever. (helps to have "U shaped' ulpholstery pry tool for the bigger linkage.)

Mark position of bolt and Unbolt rear window guide. You can pull this partway out of the rubber bit and let it sit in the door.

Remove the door latch assembly (kinda like that creature in the movie 'alien').

The actuator pops on and it held with a screw. Be sure that the little cam is engaged properly.

When you are all done, reset the auto up/down feature by closing the window fully and hold button for 2sec. Ditto for down.

How do you replace a car key?

Call up the dealership that is the make of your car and give them the VIN# and they will make you a key.

That is not your only option. There are many locksmiths that specialize in

automotive key "origination". I myself originate keys on a weekly basis.

The reason I am improving this answer:

Many dealerships only can go back into their system so far, so many years back -

e.g. Ford Motor Co. only goes back 10 years. Being 2011 now, if you have a 1997

model Ford, the dealer cannot help you. I know this because I go to the Ford

dealership here locally and produce keys regularly because every year they purge

the previous tenth year back from the system.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Some vehicles keys can ONLY be made at the dealer (mostly brand new cars etc). Pricing varies from place to place (even dealerships) so SHOP AROUND.

How can you fix the passenger door lock on 1990 Jetta Volkswagen when the doors will not open from in or outside?

I am a locksmith in Maryland. It sounds like the linkage that goes from your outside and inside handles to the latch have come undone for some reason. OR the latch itself may be jammed for some reason. Did someone recently use a slim Jim on the car or maybe someone tried to break into it? Call around to local locksmiths and get a price. They can come out and get the door open for you with special tools that fit down in the door for just such a purpose. It may just be that the latch is stuck, or if more repairs are needed they can advise you and give you a price to repair it. Or you can get the door panel off from there and fix it yourself. Just opening the door should be a minimal charge about the same as a regular car opening. Different locksmiths charge different rates. Shop around.

I had the same problem,

The latch mechanism wraps itself around a pin to keep the door closed. The pole is protected by a plastic tube for a tigh fit. What has happpened is that that plastic is worn out and is causing the latch to remain stuck.

First The manual says that the handle can be removed very easily by removing the plastic cover with a screwdriver, then remove one of the screws securing the handle to the door. Unfortunately, the second screw is located on the inside of the door which can't be removed because the door is shut and won't open. You will have to slide the handle toward the front of the vehicle and eventually breaking the handling assembly from the door. Once you have mangaged to remove the handle, you will notice a little metal plate, inside the door handle hole. That is the mechanism which the outside handle pushes down to open the door. It is probably seized...Spray lots of WD40 and with a hammer and flat screw driver, try knocking the assembly down.

IF you look deeper into the hole, observe how the locking mechanism works, and make sure that the door is unlock. Just behind and below you will be able to observed the innsr handles operation, by functioning the indoor handle.

Once you get the door open, check for the pin I told you about, spray more WD40 and replace the handle

Good luck

You have a 2000 Honda Civic with door lock problems that seems to be happening to the drivers side door not locking or unlocking with using the keyless entry Is this in the door or a fuse problem?

Possible solutionMy 2000 civic had horrible issues with lubrication on the lock mechanism. It made the noise like it would unlock, but would promptly lock again. After having the service dudes fix it every month for 2 years I decided to try fixing it myself. By removing the door panel, I found that the runnels where the rain water goes, happen to flood the door mechanism, causing stiffness. Great design Honda! I managed to get it to work by soaking the mechanisim in Engine oil. YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY.

If in your situation:

When standing near the driver side and activating the un/lock via remote, do you hear it trying to un/lock? Do your parking lights flash? If you push lock twice in a row does the horn beep?

Is it difficult to un/lock using the manual locking lever? (A trick with Honda to lock the door manually when the door is open is to hold the door handle in the open position and close the lock).

If you said yes to the above, more than likely you have a lube issue. You may need to remove the door panel to gain minimal access to the locking mechanism.

If your parking lights don't flash, change your remote battery! If that ain't it, you may need to re-program your Keyless entry with your fob. Else, take it in for service.
