Locks and Latches

Locks and latches are parts of a door. While the latch ensures that the door stays in a closed position to prevent it from opening, lock prevents the door from being opened without a matching key.

How do you remove the door panel on a 1995 Hyundai Elantra?

The one on where you put you hand on to open the door.. there is no screw there... and once all the screws are out pull it off.. your gonna have to use some muscle but it'll come off.

How do you change door locks on a 1992 subaru legacy?

The first thing to suggest is to take your car to a shop that has done this before. This is a "no fun" job, and you should have replacement parts in hand before doing anything, because it will need non-stock (non-stocking) replacement parts, and doing this job more than necessary gets old in a hurry.

Tools required:

1) 10mm and 12mm wrench

2) Phillips and flat head screwdriver(s)

3) 5 gallon pail of patience

4) hands the size of a gnat, and fingers with 6 joints

The left front and right front are the same (mirror images of each other).

If you are here because your key seems to bind in the lock (but will go with jiggling) you NEED a replacement lock cylinder, there is nothing to fix, it was designed that way, get replacement parts in hand before doing anything else.

1) drop window about 1 inch

2) remove door panel (bezel around inside door lock, 2 screws 1 above door handle (behind black foam plug) 1 below door handle (behind square plastic pop-out insert) screw at front of door panel, 2 screws below door panel, it should now pull off, disconnect wiring to window switch at plug and place panel aside)

3) on the lock end of the door is a metal bar that goes from top to bottom, you must remove the bottom nut (12mm) and the two top nuts (12mm). The top studs have a slot in them, with a flat screwdriver turn them out. Now you should be able to move that black bar around enough for you to get the 2 10mm nuts behind on the bracket that holds the door handle in the car.

4) unclip the plastic rod clips and the door handle will come out in your hand.

5) the door lock cylinder is retained in the door handle casting by a clip, remove that clip and the cylinder falls out.

Putting it back together is the reverse of removal, keeping in mind those two top studs holding the black bracket adjust how the top of the window hits the weatherstrip.

Good luck!

Inside door handle will not open door?

I have a 2008 expedition with the same problem. i took the outer door panel and found that the cable that pulls the lock mechanism in the door had come loose. My cable "bracket" was actually broken and that's why the door would not open. I am researching what part I need to replace now, but early indications look like the entire window regulator needs to be replaced since the cable appears to mount to the regulator along with the handle assembly. I am calling ford parts today to verify this...

How do you open locked doors for 1986 Chevy Celebrity?

Assuming you are locked out of the car and don't have the key, or it is locked in the car, the safest way is to have a locksmith pick the lock for you.

Most tow truck drivers carry a device called a "slim jim", they can put it down by the glass and usually unlock doors.

How do you remove a door lock on a Taurus - Sable?

# Remove the door panel

# Pull back the plastic liner from the top - rear corner to clear access to the area behind the door lock

# Work the lock a few times to identify the links that move and connect to an 'arm' extending downwards from the lock cylinder

# Now that you know what moves, look for plastic/nylon connector which holds the linkage to the arm - usually this connector lifts up off of the rod

# The lock cylinder is usually held in place by a thin, springy, u-shaped 'plate' inserted like a collar around the cylinder right at the metal wall of the door. There's a part of it sticking up and that's what you pry against to slide it out from around the cylinder. This is a good opportunity to lubricate all the moving lock parts inside the door.

How do you fix sliding door on 1997 astro it opens fine from inside but is very difficult from outside?

I'm guessing your outside pull handle needs lubrication. Try hitting the area where it hinges (behind the black part) with WD-40 or similar. Then, open (from inside if necessary) and grease up the latch mechanisms too, for good measure. If it's not a lubrication problem, there might be a loose part inside the door panel causing the outside handle to have a hard time actuating the latch release.

As indicated above, lubrication is usually the problem. Astro used cast parts (probably zinc) in the various door open mechanisms, and they are subject to corrosion from their position close to the surface of the vehicle. Open the access panel on the front edge of the sliding door (screws). Spray some aerosol white grease on the door latch mechanism near where it enters from the outside.

You will be able to see which parts move when you gently wiggle the handle. If the interior linkage fails to move, examine close for broken parts (zinc is brittle). If the parts are broken, you'll need a replacement. If not, continue with this maintenance: Work the white grease in well by activating the latch from the outside. Then check again.

The same problem occurs with the rear doors, and the solution is the same. Keep them lubed and you'll continue to get years of service. Also, to save wear and tear on your van, lube the sliding door weatherstripping with a non-sticky silicone grease. Rub it in well, and repeat within a day or two. Makes the side door very easy to open - no more having to slam with your shoulder from the inside or yank on from the outside. GM/Chevy will probably keep replacement parts for up to ten years after the vehicle make date.

Check with your dealer for up-to-date information on their parts-stocking policy.

How do you fix a car door lock that doesn't open from the outside?

Door locksRemove the inside door panel ( it's not as difficult as you may think) examine the lock and find the rods that connect the key part of the lock to the lock mechanism ( called the linkage) the linkage is usually connected by nylon or plastic clips. if nylon, just pop the clip back into place and you're done. If plastic or if the nylon clip is worn you will have to get a replacement from your dealer. they are relatively cheap and it's worth it to get an exact fit part. lastly if your dealer can't locate on, check a local salvage yard for a wreck that did not have the same door damaged.

Something to think about

More and more vehicles are coming with remote entry key fobs. When all you use is the keyless entry system door locks in some climates will seize up from lack of use. Have them lubed on a regular basis and use the key every once in a while to keep things moving. If you lube them youself make sure the window is in the up position as some aerosols will shoot a fair distance and if the window is down it can get on the window, smear it and get on the felt window guide and takes forever to wear off.

If your automatic lock isn't working, here are 4 easy steps to repair car door lock.

1. Check the Least Obvious First

It should be the most obvious, but most of the time we simply don't think of the auto key lock on our keychains. Called a key fob, it is operated by a battery that does wear out after several years of use. Replace the battery and then check it out by unlocking your doors.

2. Check Other Door Locks

Before rushing to rip off the door panel and replacing wires and parts, check the other locks. Do they work? If not, then you have a blown fuse. If they do work, the problem is most likely in the door lock solenoid.

3. Work the Lock Manually

While the key is on, work the door manually up and down while using the auto lock at the same time. If the lock tries to move, then it is a frozen lock mechanism.

4. Move Door Back And Forth

Hold the lock button down while you move slowly open and close the door. If the lock works then you have a broken or frayed wire that needs to be changed or repaired.

Try these tips for a quick way to repair car door lock. If these tips do not work and you can't find the problem, see a mechanic.

How do you fix a car door that won't open from the inside?

Make sure you don't have the "child-proof" latch set. This is usually a little mechanical lever on the rear doors. Otherwise...time to open up the door panels to see what's broken.

How can you unlock a 1993 Geo Metro without the keys?

i have a 94 geo, and have locked my keys in it a few times. the trick i found involved a long stick with a slight curve in it, about 3 feet long. the passenger door of mine has quite a bit of give (this may be a fluke) but i just pry the door open at the top rear corner and unlock it with the stick. I have a 93 Geo and was locked out on several occassions. I tried shimmying the lock open with a clotheshanger through the space between the window and door but found that forcing the window down and then using the hook of the clotheshanger to either roll the window down slightly or unlock the door was easier and much faster.

How do you fix a door lock latch that doesn't lock?

The hook portion or the latch is probably flipped up. If you lift the exterior handle up and take a pen or reasonable facsimile, you can flip it back. Post your results.

Should someone "accidently" push down the latch, which freezes, the door won't latch or close. Pulling the outside door handle and using the pen or straight tool at the same time will release all latches!!

If the latch is flipped down, as it was on my 2000 Pontiac Firebird, then simply lifting the inner or outer latch handle may not work. My car has power door locks and I could not get the latch to release no matter how many times I cycled the lock/unlock switch. I found that I had to unlock the door with the key first, then lifting the handle worked! I don't know how the latch got "thrown" initially, but I found the seatbelt buckle stuck in the doorjamb, and I had locked the car using the keychain fob. My point is this: It will help to try and figure out what was occurring when the problem might have happened. , and Good Luck!

99 Saturn SL2 remote door locks keep clicking when door is locked repaced battery in remote but still no luck?

I have the same problem with my 1999 Saturn SL2 model. It has electric locks with a remote keyless entry. I went to lock my doors as I was inside the car, driving, and all 4 locks seized up and began clicking. A day later, I can not use my remote entry thing nor can I unlock or lock my car from the inside. The alarm system prevents me from locking the door, but even if I did, the locks would still click and they'd all wind up unlocked before the day is over with. Even if I manually lock the doors from the inside, the locks start clicking and by the time I get where I'm going, they are all 4 unlocked and clicking away.

If you've gotten answer, please respond to Sacrificialclam@aim.com with "SaturnSL2" in the subject.

I can't afford for Saturn to look at it. They'll charge me $95 for a service call only to tell me the problem is going to be expensive to fix.

On September 10, 2009 I picked up the left hand door lock from a Saturn dealer and replaced it within one hour and I'm not a mechanic..problem was cleared up..door lock switch was worn out..the one on the driver's door is used the most. just take your time..i saved at least one hundred dollars by doing it myself.

_____

The driver's side and passenger's side front door locks are interchangable. Just pry off the plastic retainer and insert the door lock itself. The rear ones will not interchange with the front units. Pry from the top using a small screwdriver and it pop out.

Why did 1998 civic power door locks stop working by remote and door switch when fuses under hood and below steering wheel are fine?

Did you remove the stock radio to install an aftermarket radio by chance? If so then this is why your keyless entry stopped working because the keyless entry is hooked up to the stock radio. I had to buy a special adapter harness and throw the stock radio in the back of the dash somewhere in order to have a new radio and my doors to unlock and lock. I know it sounds stupid but there is no other way the guys at Circuit City said. Hope this helps.
