How do you change the heater core in a 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme?
You must rock the engine foreward to remove the heater hoses. To do this you need to remove the bolts holding the torque struts to the engine. use a prybar and pull the engine foreward far enough to insert the long bolt you removed from the strut through the loop hole on the strut. This will hold the engine. Then you need to remove the sound insulators under the dash board. There is a black HVAC box under the dash, Look for the center floor vent outlet under the dash and remove it. Then You will be able to access a big square cover on the HVAC box. There is something like 8 screws that hold the cover to the box. Once the cover is removed You will find the heater core and the a/c evaporator (looks like a heater core but a little bigger). There is a plate that retains the heater core in the box. The plate is secured by a couple of bolts. remove those bolts, remove the plate, then remove the heater core. When installing new heater core, use petroleum jelly or some kind of grease like white lithium and apply it to the heater hose necks on the heater core to aide installation of heater hoses.
The 3.1l engine is a interference engine. Being dual over head cam if the chain is not properly set the pistons will come into contact with the exuast valves in the heads. This can bend the valves and even puncture holes in the pistons. What results is a total loss of compression. You may have set everything properly, but when the chain snaped if the engine was running, the damage is most likely already done. Sorry.

Is there a switch to turn on overdrive in a 1995 Mercury Tracer or is it in transmission itself?
According to the 1995 Tracer's Owner Guide (page 241): Overdrive is the usual driving position for an automatic overdrive transaxle(transmission). It works the same way D (Drive) works, AUTOMATICALLY upshifting or downshifting as the vehicle speeds or slows. However, Overdrive also shifts into a fourth gear (an overdrive gear) when your vehicle cruises at a consistent speed for any length of time (like on the Interstate). Overdrive will increase your fuel economy when you are traveling at cruise speeds (usually 50mph or higher). But, Overdrive may not be appropriate for certain terrain such as hilly or mountainous roads because the transaxle (transmission) automatically shifts back and forth between 3rd and 4th gears while doing this type of driving. Therefore, it is recommended if your car is continously climbing hills/mountains (which requires additional power) then you should shift to D (Drive).

How do you open the hood of a '94 Honda Accord with a broken hood release cable?
Finding information about this kind of thing seems to be very difficult on the big wide web... I have a '96 Honda Accord, myself, and after an evening spent taping the wires that were pulled down as the result of the front left tire losing it's tread (very nasty... ripped out the tire well, broke wires, shredded the tube for the washer fluid, and pulled wires down from the back of the well.) I discovered I had only one last pull on the hood release before that broke, too, which I wasted when the tire shredded because I was trying to check something that I don't remember what it is now. Anyway, the only thing I can think of right now is to use a knife that your wife won't kill you to ruin to get in and lift the latch that's under the front of the hood (you know, the one that you have to lift to open the hood even when the hood release latch is working...) There's also a possibility that cutting the cable near the front of the tire well and leaving enough of the inner cable bare to yank on it with pliers might release it, since all it is is a steel cable within that rubber sheath that yanks a latch back and releases the hood... At the worst, I might have to try to get in past that front plastic grill (which would most likely mark the end of the grill), and pull it open there. If I think to later on, I'll post what I ended-up having to do, but if I forget, you can reach me at ("d-t-s" at "swbell" dot "net") to find out what I did.

I have the same problem with my 23hp kawijunk. What i have found is that when you tear down the engine you will find there is a bushing/bearing in the top of the crank case. If you look on the parts breakdown it doesnt show the bushing because kawasaki says the bushing is casted in to the block and cannot be removed. That is wrong it can be removed by pressing it out but you have to match it up with a bearing maker. I have found a part number on the internet that is PAP 40 20 p10 pl which is a INA bearing bushing but that bushing is for the bottom pan not the top bushing in the crank case. What i done was went to a local bearing dist. and found the bearing was made by INA but INA doesnt care a PAP 40 25 P10 which is what you need for the top. So i ordered a PAP 40 30 p10 and plan to have it cut down 5mm to be exact fit as origional. So if your engine is like mine the crank in mine was shot also. So the parts to fix yours will prolly be the same as mine. What you will need is a new sump pan gasket, bottom oil seal, top bushing, new crank. That should get you back in business if you dont plan on doing this work yourself it could get expensive at a shop with all the labor involved. Let me know if i can help.

I broke both door handles on my olds cutlass is there a way to get in from the outside?
Yes, calla locksmith that can get inside of the guts of the door from the outside and he can "jimmy" the door open, this will probably cost you about $60 to $80 dollars.
***Improvement on this answer! You can get in through the trunk. I have the same car and have had the same problem. Have someone small crawl into the trunk and push through the backseat--on my car (97 Olds Cutlass Supreme) you can push through the backseat on the driver's side and open the doors from the inside.

How do you know the proper rear brake adjustment on a 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme?
Assuming it is rear DRUM brakes, adjust the shoe until there is friction when spinning the wheel or drum, back off a shade.
Most have self ajusters on them. Ajust them out until the drum will hardly fit back on. After you put the wheels back on and your done with putting the brake shoes on. Find a place where you can run your car in reverse safely. Go bakwards about 25 miles an hour and hit the brakes hard. Do this several times and they should ajust themselves out to where they should be. This is assuming like above we are talking about the back brakes and they are drum style brakes.
