Why does your 97 Pontiac Transport keep overheating?
The 3.4L engine has a common problem which makes the van overheat. The one of two major problems are both cooling related and that is why they fail to do that job and the engine begins to overheat.
One likely problem is that the Intake Manifold Gasket is torn. This is the lesser of the two problems. The second likely problem is that the Head Gasket is torn. This is the bigger problem. Many times, it is easier for the mechanic to just swap your engine with a different one from the scrapyard.

Where is the spare tire located on a 1998 transport?
It is under the gas tank at the rear of the vehicle, and you use the jack handle and another rod to remove it.
Those two pieces are included in plastic package, and fastened together with the sizzor jack.
This is all fastened into a secure position in the rear right side compartment of the vehicle, that you get at by raising the lift gate and unfastening a cover there on the right side.
Once you have retreived the handle and rod from this package, you push the rod into a hole by the bumper, and inside the liftgate opening.
It will be right in front of you knee or thigh as you stand reaching into the liftgate cargo area.
When you put that rod into the hole, and it engages into the spare tire holding assembly you will feel that it is in the correct place.
With the rod in place, attach the handle to this and turn it counter clockwise (it only needs a few turns ), and the tire will drop down automatically.
Once it is down all the way, you hold the tire up and feed the end of the cable or chain upwards through the hole in the wheel to finish releasing it from the vehicle.

Not totally sue about the 95 but I just replaced the heater core on a 94, its behind the clove box on passenger side. I went as far as taking out command control or the computer to make more room to manuver. There is a support rod that goes accross the front of the dash that I also lossend so that I could make enough room to put the new one in. Coming out was ok I cut the in and out inlet off which we cut let the old heater core drop straight down.
Just did a 98 heater core and it's a b----. Job is worth $1400 to $1900 to have done.
You must remove the complete Heater/Air conditioner module, that is a large black plastic plenum in the middle of the inst. panel and requires disassembly of the instrument panel and most of it's related equipment and the hinge pillar-cross beam must be removed just to access it's removal. A good mechanic will take 3 to 4 days of full time work to complete and owners have sold the vehicle because of the problem. It requires draining antifreeze and evacuating the a/c freon system to accomplish this repair.
Think TWICE before getting into this one.
I know because I even had the original shop manuals to do the job myself.
Don't let anyone snow you about this repair!
Where is the location of thermostat on a Pontiac transport Montana?
Looking at the ( 3400 )engine from the front, you need to look underneath of the throttle body and its ducting. It's not a fun thing to get at, but it's reasonable to get at when you take the time to block out the parts it is hidden under. The temperature sensor is right there as well. You won't hurt anything by removing the throttle body right back to the air cleaner housing, JUST TAKE YOUR TIME AND BE REASONABLY GENTLE WITH IT, because if you get too rough with it, you can do some damage. There are some wire plugs to disconnect with clips you spring away from the connectors, some hose clamps, and some rubber ducting to remove. You might not want to remove the throttle body because you need to deal with the linkages as well. Once you get all that out of the way, you'll be able to see a housing with a large radiator hose connected to it. The thermostat is inside of that housing. It is a miserble thing to get your wrenches in to remove the housing with out removing the exhaust cross over pipe, but it is definitaly do-able, I didn't remove it. As with any thermostat standing on its side as these are, you need to make sure it stays in place in the housing as you are reassembling it. Other wise you can literally break the housing if it comes out of place. If the bolts go in with out being forced, and the housing comes together smoothly, you have succeeded. The net issue is that the thermostat is of course one with a special feature that the cheaper ones don't have. Once they have been over heated they will never close again. It's sort of like a fusable link that melts open. I simply compared the physical characteristics of the $30.00 one and $16.00 ones and bought the cheap one. I've driven that engine for many thousands of miles since with no ill effects.
