Power Steering

Power steering provided mechanical steering assistance to the drivers of most land vehicles, including automobiles and trucks. Today, most power steering systems use hydraulic system in order to maneuver the vehicle’s wheels.

What is the difference between shock absorber and steering damper?

The main difference is that its valved differently. Street shocks are often times 60/40 with a soft damping for control and ride quality. Performance handling shocks are typically 60/40 to 70/30 with a tighter damping to control the stiffer spring rates often associated with handling suspensions. Drag shocks are usually 90/10 to promote weight transfer but are unsuitable for street use.

Steering dampers are always 50/50 and have damping that is matched to the steering system. Obviously a monster truck with 78" tires needs more damping than an 4x4 truck with 31" tires.

So that was the long answer. The short answer is: not much is different except damping rates, but you can't simply mount any shock to a steering stabilizer and expect it to work.

When you turn the steering wheel it makes noise on my Saturn vue?

If it is a whining noise, the vehicle is low on steering fluid or the power steering pump may be going bad. If it is a clicking noise, the CV joints may be going bad.

NOPE a Saturn vue has electric power steering and no pawer steering pumpA Saturn vue has 4 stabilizer links and they are made of plastic

Moog makes metal replacements for the front but the rear still come from the dealer and are plastic

they wear out and make noise when you turn

replace them and the noise should go away

Where do you add steering wheel fluid to a 1987 Toyota Camry?

In the steering wheel fluid reservoir, passenger side of engine. Add dextron transmission fluid to it not "steering wheel fluid"

What is the average operating temperature of power steering fluid?

POWER STEERING FLUIDS

Typical power steering fluids routinely operate at

110-115ーC and under peak conditions the temperatures will

rise to 160ーC. This peak can create many problems, both with

metals and non-metals so at least one manufacturer is

considering an oil-cooler to minimize upper temperatures to

125ーC. This limit will allow the use of HNBR seals except in

areas subject to seal oxidative attack. The latest trend is to

improve the viscosity-temperature function (VT) relationship

specifically at low temperature.

This is achieved by utilizing branched paraffinic oils

whereby the side groups (branches) prevent main-chain

crystallization. Unfortunately some of the newest oils work so

well that units are suffering low-temperature leakage. This

occurs because formerly the hydraulic fluid increased in

viscosity as did the seal at low temperature. Now only the seal

increases in stiffness with a concurrent decrease in elastic

recovery rate. If the seals (specifically metal-cased shaft seals)

have an elastic recovery rate slower than the disturbing

frequency the unit is subjected to, leakage will be inevitable.

Seal elastomers should always be tested using dynamic

mechanical rheological tests (DMRT) by scanning the various

operational frequencies the unit is subjected to in service

versus temperature (10).

How do you know when you need a new power steering pump?

your car will become very difficult to steer. now that also could be that you need power steering fluid, so check your fluid levels first...add more if needed, if it is still hard to turn the wheel on your car (very stiff), and there is a whiring noise, it's probably time to change the power steering pump. check for a refurbished on first, brand new should be your last resort, especially if it's an older car.

Where is the power steering fluid cap located on a 1996 Pontiac Bonneville?

Add SNUG against the engine, right below the sway bar

I have a 98 Bonneville SSE with a 3800 Series II V-6 engine- ( NOT SUPERCHARGED ) The power-steering fluid cap should be in the same place as on my car Look to the left and below your alternator- near the passenger side firewall! you might need a flashlight to see it better, but it should be right there - to the left and below your alternator. Hope this helps.

Where is the power steering reservoir located on a 2004 Malibu?

The reason you cannot find it is because it isn't there to be found. newer chevys don't use liquid power steering boxes its electronic. and when it starts to feel limp you MUST replace the ENTIRE units costing about $800 bucks.

Why would Power steering make a popping sound?

Check for worn or loose steering components: Tie rod ends; drag link; pitman arm; idler arm

1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme power steering pump is whining badly fluid partially slightly aerated foamy and overflowing out of the blue. Was fine last night when driven. Pump bad Suggestion?

Working on 1993 Olds Cutlass Ciera 'S' right now with the exact same situation! Basically, the usual problem here is that the P/S pump driveshaft seal is what fails so you have P/S fluid leaking out there. The easiest solution is to replace the P/S pump with a re-built one, but in my case I have already taken the pump off, and removed the pulley from it because my plan is to just replace the pump driveshaft seal since I know that the pump itself is fine because it worked perfectly prior to the leaking problem, and I am incredibly cheap! Because replacing only the driveshaft seal requires a higher level of skill, this may not be for the average do-it-youselfer so in that case replacing the entire pump would definitely be much easier but you'll probably still have to remove the pulley from the old pump, and then re-install it on the replacement pump. A puller is required to remove the pulley, and a simple installation tool will put it on the new pump! This is really not that difficult if you have these tools, which can be rented for a few dollars at some large auto parts stores. A little experience is also helpful. To me, this is not really that difficult a job, but then I've been doing my own work on cars since I was about 15, which is about 30 years. Be sure to clean everything so as to remove all P/S fluid from all pulleys and belts, and also be sure use the appropriate new P/S fluid for this vehicle when filling the reservoir to the proper cold level, and do not over-tighten belts! Thanks

What can you do for a leak in your 2001 T1.8 Passat rack and pinion if repair is not possible and replacement is very costly?

It depends on the location of the leak. Commonly the feed hoses from the reservoir to the power steering pump will leak, the fix is to just replace the clamps.

How to replace the power steering belt on a 1988 Monte Carlo 305 engine?

you may have to take the alternator belt off first. loosen the bolt that is in the slotted part of the alternator bracket and loosen the pivot bolt and nut that goes through the cast aluminum body of the alternator bolt heads are 9/16 or 5/8 inch. push on the alterator to loosen that belt enough to take off. now the pulley of the powersteering pump migh have holes in it get one about the 4 oclock position and you may see the bolt you need to loosen the pump up and pivot it to fit your belt on. if there are no holes in the pully simply look at the bracket that mounts the pump to the motor and find the bolt that has a slot behind it and that's the bolt you need to loosen up to pivot the pump and slide on a new belt. you will need some sort of pry bar to hold the new pump belt tight while you tighten the bolts back up. BE CAREFUL not to puncture your pump resovior or you will need a new pump because now it has a hole in it. put your alternator belt back on and use a pry bar to push in back into place and be careful not to pinch any wires when you do it. tighten bolts back up while holding pressure on the belt. when the car is running you should see very little vibrations in the belts and you know you have them tight enough.

How do you change the power steering pump on a 2000 dodge ram 1500 with the 59 liter magnum engine?

you need a special puller, it is designed to remove the pulley whitch is pressed on, after the pulley is removed you can get to the 4 bolts that secure the pump, the puller also servs the purpose of pressing the pully back on, can be bought at most auto parts stores, i paid around $70 for mine, unless you do this type of work often it will get used once and that's it, so you may be dollars ahead just to pay someone to do it for you

What does it mean when the power steering light comes on?

Many possible answers to this one but a good starting point would be either the belt is loose or you need to add power steering fluid to the unit itself. It could also have a bad bearing in it.
