theres gonna either be a tensioner bolt or tensioner pulley... u should beable to locate waterpump, crank, a/c, alternator, powersteering,idle pulley. knowing the car woulda been easier

I have changed the idler pulley here recently on my 2001 ford ranger 3.0L, I dont know how off the top of my head, but a Haynes or Chilton's manual is the absolute best moneysaver you could ever buy for that truck. It will tell you how to tear it down and put it back together. They run about 15 bucks but it will pay for itself over and over again! I hope I could help.

The water pumps are behind the timing belt on the lower portion of the block (I assume we're talking about the 4 cylinder engines), and run off the timing belt (meaning that you have to either be VERY careful with the timing or retime the whole thing when you're done). I've done a few of them and I would *really* recommend taking it to a mechanic - it's a royal pain in the butt to do yourself and, frankly, whatever you do for work you're probably better off making enough money doing that to pay the mechanic rather than spending hours and hours and hours yourself and risking ending up with your timing out.

Despite how much of a hassle it is, it doesn't take an experienced mechanic very long to do it (and the more or less 'official' job-time-estimate manuals reflect this, so shop around if you get a ridiculously high quote); I believe it's only rated at a few hours.

If you DO decide to do it, get a shop manual (ie: Haynes of Chilton). You'll need it. Good luck either way!

The most logical reason for the key or tip as you call it breaking off is probably a result of improper torque on the crankshaft pulley or the crankshaft pulley is out of balance.To prevent this I would highly suggest buying a new crankshaft pulley that will be balanced.To explain what happens over time the strain of adjusting the belts from the alternator and power steering and air condition pull the crankshaft pulley with varied tension and can cause the crank pulley to warp to a degree causing it to be unbalanced.While this may seem a bit strange the metal will be affected by this due to age,temperature,torque from the belts tensions pulley left and right.Best bet buy a new crankshaft pulley (note just look at the pulley while idling and see if is wobbling) this will tell you the pulley is warped or out of balance.Plain and simple!

If you are referring to a Serpentine belt, then you must pull back the idler tensioner to remove the belt. If you have a half inch breaker bar that works perfect with a 15 mm socket. Put the new belt on and the tensioner will apply proper tension. Check to see if the tensioner is good, and replace if necessary. If you are referring to a standard drive belt, then whatever it is driving, Alternator, P/S Pump, etc. you must loosen the bolts holding that item in place enough to allow you to move it far enough to get the belt off. Install the new belt and adjust tension properly.

Before you remove the old pulley, it's best to note its position on the pump shaft, and its relation to the other pulleys. The simplest way to install the new pulley (or reinstall the old pulley) is to rent or buy a power steering pump pulley installer tool. Auto parts stores like Autozone, Kragen/O'Reilly, etc. rent these tools, with a full refund of the rental fee when you return the tool. Sometimes you can also use a simple bolt, nut, and washer (some new pulleys may come with this bolt; use a strong washer as it may bend or break). If you're using the simple bolt approach, thread the nut onto the bolt, then slide the washer onto the bolt. Set the pulley onto the end of the pump's shaft, then thread the tool, or simple bolt, into the pump's shaft. If you're using the tool, grab the end of its bolt head with a wrench to hold it still, while you use another wrench to rotate clockwise the part of the tool that pushes the pulley onto the shaft. If you're using a simple bolt/nut/washer, grab the end of the bolt's head with a wrench to hold it still, while you tighten the nut clockwise, and the washer and nut will push the pulley onto the shaft.

No,the engine is designed to be no interference.You can turn the crank or cam without damage to get it in time.

Insert ratchet into top left corner of the idler pulley.This will release idler tension. hope this helps. Art If you mean a 3.8L, the only one that can be released is the one near the A/C compressor. The one on top is fixed in place. It is NOT easy to do on that car like the above answer, but it really isn't hard. just use a 11/16 wrench/socket on the bolt on the pulley and pull up . easy as pie...

My husband did something similar to this a little while ago. He had to put the wheel back on, put the vehicle on the ground and use an impact wrench to get the bolt off.

These are typically easy to changed first take off the pulley then you will have access to the bolts they behind the pulley

It is a wheel that allows for the vector (direction) of a force to be changed. So if I was pulling down on a pulley, the pulley could turn that into me pulling something up.

I haven't seen one lately, but most GM's require a power-steering pulley puller. You should be able to borrow one from a local parts store for a small deposit, or maybe buy one from an online auction site.

It depends on what options the car is equipped with. Does it have Air Conditioning? Does it have Power Steering? If it has neither, then the belt runs around the crankshaft pulley, water pump, and alternator. Power steering adds another groove to the crankshaft pulley, and another pulley on the pump itself. Same with Air Conditioning.

If you pry up on the pulley with a bar on each side of it and while keeping pressure on the pulley, hit the end of the shaft that the pulley is on with a brass mallet, the pulley will usually break free.

Your belt could fall off causing possible damage to altinator and any other belt driven devises. Fully drain your battery, belt could become too loose and not properly run everything, or possible everything could stay fine. I wouldn't bet on the latter though. Hope this helped.

you dont adjust the pulley you move the compressor,there are two bolts you loosen then an adjustment bolt you screw it or out to move the compressor retighten all bolts and recheck tension

when your at the top of the deck where you can see the object go to the left and you'll land on the pulley system then jump side-woods up and you'll get the object.

not fun at all, there are three bolts holding it on, maybe just two, but it has to go out the bottom of the car, hope i helped

Not hard at all. Just did it about two hours ago. the job takes about 30 minutes all together. One bolt on top and one exactly opposite it on the bottom.
