First and foremost, make sure you have a diagram before removing the old belt. If there isn�t one under the hood, get out the pencil and paper and draw it out labeling the pullies and arrows pointing to the direction the belt travels on them. Save this paper in the glove compartment when the job is done for future reference. As far as replacing goes, it depends on the engine. Believe it or not, they are different amongst manufacturers, makes and models, so Bclear! If there is a spring loaded tensioner, you�ll need to turn the tensioner back to relieve pressure, and slide the belt off the tensioner pulley. Depending on the tensioner, you may be able to use a socket wrench with the right socket, 3/8� drive with socket wrench, or in some cases, you�ll need a tool that is meant for just this called a belt tensioner wrench. After it is relieved of tension, the belt can be removed. The new one gets routed the same, if you can�t remember, refer to your diagram. If you didn�t make one and can�t remember, listen closely and you�ll hear me laughing at you. Look for a bolt going through a bracket that the alternater or power steering mounts to. Loosen the bolt, pry back whatever components keeps tension, and replace the belt. Try using a new belt buckle. The stretch in the belt is what makes it fly. It's like having a rubber band around your waist. Bend the clasp in a bit and it should cure the problem.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise the vehicle.
3. Remove the front lower splash shield.
4. Drain the coolant by opening draincock in radiator.
5. Close the radiator draincock.
6. Install the front splash shield.
7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Remove the accessory drive belt.
9. Remove the generator.
10. Remove the heater hoses.
11. Remove the drive belt tensioner bolts
12. Remove the drive belt tensioner.
13. Reverse procedure to install.

Get a standard 3/8" socket wrench, just the socket wrench, you don't need any sockets. Look on the idler pulley bracket for a square hole in the bracket. Place the socket driver in the square hole. You can now easily move the idler pulley to relieve the belt tension and remove the belt. I found that my 3/8" ratcheting socket wrench was too thick in profile to fit in the rather narrow space on my 1998 Cavalier. So, I bought and used a 3/8" breaker bar which happened to have a thinner profile and it fit and worked very well. There is also a thin profile tool made especially for serpentine belts with little clearance at the tensioner.

The best way to do this is to check out the manual. This will list the parts that are needed to do the job right.

If your F350 has a serpentine belt it really can't be 'tightened'. The tensioner, located on the passenger side second pully down on a 7.3 PSD, is what provides the tension on the belt. If you are getting slack then it is probably time to replace the tensioner. If you are at all mechanically inclined it is a fairly easy task. Even if you are not and have a Haynes manual you can probably knock it out in a few hours.

it is not hard work,just lots of it. depending on the engine,2.4l,3.0. etc...

you basically have to take everthing off front of engine, thenCAREFULLY keep every pulley and tensioner in line while you swap the belt. Work is extensive,i just finished up 2.4l engine. interference engines have to be exact when you time them or you can bend valves,damage connecting rods and pistons. This is not your dad's Chevy 305 v8 where if you goofed and turned the engine over nothing happened,these engines it will happen and the damaged is extensive. So $ 358.00 at Mitsubishi is not so bad and while you are in there don't be cheap ... replace the water pump too.

If it's anything like removing the alternator on a 99 Civic than it's better left to a repair shop, unless you know a thing or two about fixing cars. You have to remove the bushings on the control arm, partially remove the drive axle and than drop the alternator down. It's the only way to get it out. Get to know someone at a Honda or Acura Service Center so you can get it done for a lot less money.
