Serpentine Belts

There is no serpentine belt. Each belt-driven accessory uses a regular drive belt. They only fit the spots where they came off, unless you are *very* determined to install them the wrong way.

You can obtain a serpentine belt diagram have most Chrysler/Jeep dealerships. The serpentine belt diagram can also be found at most auto-parts stores.

Take off, or loosen the front half of the wheel well. There will be 3 screws (7mm) and two trim clips There are two clips on the plastic piece just under the belt. Take those out, and you will have full access to the belt and the tensioner. The tensioner nut (so to speak) is 9/16, and cannot be accessed with a socket. Must use a wrench with a long handle. At that point, hook the wrench to the nut and turn it clockwise to loosen. Remove the belt, and replace it with a new one. I just did this in my driveway with some ramps and a Gatorback belt that I got at AutoZone for about $23.00. Good luck.

There should be an auto tension device. It is not adjustable. Usually at 60k miles you replace the serpentine belt, and usually you'll want to replace the tensioner as well. If tension is a problem, make sure it's the right belt, and if so - replace the tensioner.

2000/2001 BELT TENSIONER

There is a simple fix to this issue and I've run across the answer on a message board about a year ago, and when implemented by the Toyota mechanics there were amazed that the issue was fixed in less than a minute when their consideration was to purchase a new belt tensioner assembly at $350 bucks for the entire assembly.

NOW, you going to hate me for this but I cannot remember what the fix was. It had something to do with either tightening the Tensioner Pulley, or Tensioner Bold or some adjustment to hydraulic cylinder or flange. I'm sorry for the loss of memory, I should have wrote it down, cause the fix lasted 1.5 years and I have 120K on my Celica.

NOW if anyone knows what the funk I'm talking about, please fill me in, because the squeak is back and they are offering the same solution to purchase the assembly kit.

Alright. I just changed the Serpentine belt on my wife's 2001 Celica GT. Here are fairly detailed instructions on how to do it. USE THEM AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! USE THEM AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

First. There are six pulleys on the passenger side of the motor. They are arranged almost like the diamonds (or whatever) on a 6 of diamonds playing card with the two in the center being set closer together than the top and bottom pairs. SO get a piece of paper and draw six circles on it like this. I am going to use numbers to help explain how the belt is routed.

crank (5 6) A/C

The parenthesees show which direction the belt goes around the pulley.

Second, Take off the right side plastic cowling by popping out four plastic studs. Use a flat blade screwdriver and carefully pry them out. You may even be able to reach under and push a locking pin out of them. It is the dot in the center of the button head. Just push it straight out.

Third, Take off the top cowl from the head. It has two 10mm cap nuts and two plastic studs. They are not the same as the passenger side cowl studs. Just carefully pry them out with a plastic screwdriver. You will damage the cowling less if you pry under the cowl, not the buttons.

Fourth, Use an 18mm box wrench to loosen the bolt that holds the tensioner(About 6 inches behind the tensioner pulley). Push on the belt and you will notice that it has loosened some. Use the handle of a hammer to push harder on it and it will loosen a little more. Pry the belt off the alternator pulley and the rest will be pretty easy.

Fifth, Start routing the belt around the back three pulleys. Get it under pulleys 5(crank pulley) and 6(air conditioner compressor) with the ribs facing up. Loop it so that the flat side of the belt goes around pulley 3(Tensioner pulley). Then snake it around pulley 1(power steering) with the ribs facing the pulley. Move to the front of the motor. Bring the belt up and around pulley 4(Water pump)Bring up all remaining slack to the alternator pulley (6) Now holding the belt with one hand, make sure the belt has not fallen off the pulleys and adjust as neccesary.

Now take a 19MM box wrench and put it on the adjuster lug(about two inches forward of the bolt you loosened) on the tensioner assembly and pull toward the front of the car. At the same time, wiggle and pull and tug the belt onto the alternator pulley. You may need to put the box end of your 18mm wrench over the front lug of the open end of the 19mm to extend the 19mm so that you have leverage to pull it forward. Once the belt is on the alternator pulley, let the 19mm wrench back off. it will feel spring loaded. The belt will tighten and snug itself down to the pulleys. Then just tighten the 18mm bolt back up and check your work. Start the car to make sure it is on properly. Replace your cowls.

Loosten the p/s mounting bolts and move the pump. There is sometimes a hole in the pulley to gain access to the bolt behind it or you may need to pull the pulley,

It has a serptine belt that goes around the alternator and water pump etc. And in fromt of the radiator you will see a pully with a bolt on it that is the belt tentioner its spring loaded take a box wrench and pull up on it to take off the belt and take the bots off the alternator and replace and repeat the steps in reverse order to put the belt back on.

There is one belt on a fiero. You take off the passenger side rear wheel. you should be able to see the slider that the alternator is mounted on. loosen the bolt at the top of the alternator and then loosen the bolt on the slider. This will release the tention on the belt. The trick is going to be getting the tention right when you put the new belt on. You might need another person to help you by using a bar of some kind to pry on the alternator while you tighten the bolts. don't wrench on it too hard though. there should be aboout a 1/4 inch of play if you push in the center of the belt between two pulleys.

First and foremost, make sure you have a diagram before removing the old belt. If there isn�t one under the hood, get out the pencil and paper and draw it out labeling the pullies and arrows pointing to the direction the belt travels on them. Save this paper in the glove compartment when the job is done for future reference. As far as replacing goes, it depends on the engine. Believe it or not, they are different amongst manufacturers, makes and models, so Bclear! If there is a spring loaded tensioner, you�ll need to turn the tensioner back to relieve pressure, and slide the belt off the tensioner pulley. Depending on the tensioner, you may be able to use a socket wrench with the right socket, 3/8� drive with socket wrench, or in some cases, you�ll need a tool that is meant for just this called a belt tensioner wrench. After it is relieved of tension, the belt can be removed. The new one gets routed the same, if you can�t remember, refer to your diagram. If you didn�t make one and can�t remember, listen closely and you�ll hear me laughing at you. Some belts require motor mounts to be removed and some are just plain nasty, such as the 1.9 motor found in ford escorts. If there is no tensioner. Look for a bolt going through a bracket that the alternater or power steering mounts to. Loosen the bolt, pry back whatever components keeps tension, and replace the belt. Make the tension respectfully taunt and tighten bolt back down after the belt is replaced.. All sound advice, but I would like to add that with alternator tension AND belt tensioners, there is a specific deflection specification. If a belt is too loose, it will squeel and wear faster, possibly affecting cooling, charging, Etc. if it is too tight, the pressure will damage alternator, compressor, and water pump bearings! A simple fish scale will do. Or you can buy a snap on deflection gauge for 4.7 billion dollars!!! :-)

A serpentine belt operates several pulleys, twisting over them like a snake. This belt configuration has become more popular as opposed to using several different belts for various functions.

I use 0/30 synthetic in my 89 260e. I have owned it since it was 1 year old and have serviced it myself. Because of the long life of synthetic oil I only have to change the oil and filter every 40,000 miles and find its only using 1 litre every 600 miles. There is little blue smoke so the engine is very healthy. It has done 160,000 and it has only required a new wiring loom and 1 gearbox.

Sure if you got a smaller belt that fit perfectly after bypassing the A/C. Just disconnect, or pull the fuse to the A/C and allow it to act as a idler.

Auto Zone will probably print you off a copy of the diagram that you need. They have done it for me in the past at no charge. They even went out to the car to check that they had the right diagram.

First you locate the tensioner pulley, which is the black plastic pulley below the alternator pulley. Then put a 15MM socket with long breaker bar and turn clockwise as you are facing the motor. It will be hard, there is about 120lbs of pressure on it, but you will move it. Have a helperremove the old belt and immediately follow it with the new belt in the same route. Release the tension, done!

Check for small cracks or excessive wear in the surface of the belt, oil on the pulleys or buildup of debris in the grooves of the pulleys. belt tensioner may also be faulty. possible overstretched belt.

A cam belt spins the cams in the exact timing sequence for the valves to open, it is considered part of the internal engine workings and is absolutely necessary for operation. A fan belt operates the cooling fan and maybe other accesories such as power steering and air conditioning, it is on the outside of the motor.

A 78 Lebaron does not have a serpentine belt. It has Separate belts for the alternator, power steering, AC/Water pump and Smog Pump.

you can not run it without having apulley in place of the a/c compressor because of belt routing. the pulley bracket needs to b custom made

Yes, a bad belt or tensioner can be related to a rough idle. If it is not tight enough, or worn it is not able to run as smoothly as needed to keep the engine running smooth.

It should be on a sticker under your hood. The belt diagram is very easy for the optra, just draw it before you remove the belt. If you already removed it and are stuck, call the dealer they will print off a diagram for free
