I have a ford escort with a zetic engine 1.6 1996, the serpentine belt tensioner is the free running pully that runs the belt between the crank wheel and the higher pully. its spring loaded, place a 14 or 15 mm ring spanner and move it has tigtenning the bolt. it must be done from the bottom as from the top there is no space. to have access to it you need to turn the wheel outwords and remove a plastic cover. on the rebuild fit the belt on the pullies except the AC one, bottom most pully at the front, then push the tensinoner back and place the last pully on. its spring loaded keep hands save.

my guess would be that the ignition timing is off, but it is really hard to tell without actually looking at it an listening to it.

Its the alternator drive belt slipping and it needs to be adjusted. A vee belt should have about 1/2 inch of in and out movement halfway (about an inch or 25mm of free play) along the longest length between pulleys. A flat belt should be adjusted according to the manufacturers specification.

It should be either under the hood in the engine compartment or in your owners manual.

I just get an estimate from a tire store for $93.00, but it would be cheaper if you know how to replace it yourself since the belt was only $43.

You may have stripped the bolt by turning it counter clockwise, which would allow the bolt to spin but not allow it to be removed. The bolt is reverse threaded. Even after being stripped, sometimes by turning the bolt clockwise it may be removed. Hope this helps. DCC

Buy the one that fits a 95 3.4L Camaro that came from the factory without A/C if that was an option. Otherwise talk to your Auto Parts store manager.

you shouldn't need a diagram but you should change them all if they are all aproximatly the same age because its just a lot easier to do it once... (Okay this is a HORRIBLE answer!)

Heres a better one that will actually help you, There should be a diagram sticker under the hood that shows how to install the belt, ESPECIALLY IF IT IS A SERPENTINE BELT!!! there is a certain way to route that belt to catch all the pulleys it needs. If there is no sticker under the hood do your best to remember how the original was on there...

Because the alternator puts a load on the engine of several horsepower, the belt must be very tight. However, if it is too tight, the bearings of the alternator shaft will wear out quickly. To tension the belt properly, adjust until there is about 1/2 inch of play in the center of the longest span. If this does not stop the squealing, the belt may have been glazed from being too loose, and needs to be replaced.

to loosen belt tensiomer, u can use a 1/2 inch drive socket weench or buy proper tool for it the part of socket wrench that socket goes on, will fit in the square hole in front of tensioner once this is in place push wrench towards centre of vehicle enuff to remove belt then slowly release pressure on wrench

One of the five pulleys in the alternator/power steering/cooling system group is a tensioner. It's on the right side (driver's side) and it's the middle one (it's also smaller than the others). Pry off the dust cap with a flat head screw driver and there will be a spot to insert a T-47 torx (though a T-50 will also work and is easier to find). Turn this counter-clockwise to loosen the tension and the belt should slip off. If you're going to be removing the belt and putting a new one on (recommended, obviously), then you're going to need to remove the fan clutch and fan shroud. Do this step before loosening the tensioner if you're going to replace the belt! It's a somewhat involved DIY, but certainly not hard and well worth it. Your toughest part will be taking the fan clutch off then putting it back on. They sell a tool to facilitate getting it off, or you can just use the belt's tension to keep the water pump pulley in place as you hammer a 32mm wrench CLOCKWISE to get it off (it's reverse threaded).

This type of 4X4 needs to be either in neutral or in park before you change over to 4x4 high or low. IT might be a little difficult at first. depending if you want it on 4 low, just slide up from the 4 high when car is in neutral. it is the 1st slide up from 2 low. But if you want in 4 high (usualy for snow, mud,etc.) then you will need to go up to 4 low then pull a little to the left then go up to either 2 or 4 high. The light should go on where the dash is and it should fell higher while your in the car.

You should have a diagram to the left of the hood latch. In the diagram, it should show the tension pulley that needs to relieved. Tools: long ratchet wrench and socket. It's fairly easy to do.

Life expentancy would be determined by the vehicle maintenance process. A well maintained vehicle may expect the belt to last 60,000 - 100,000. Periodic inspections for cracks will prevent further damage if replaced once found to be in such condition.

In my experience burning out alternators on a Pontiac and an Oldsmobile, you can get about 100,000 miles out of it before expecting to replace the alternator.

That's in your owners manual, but a general rule of thumb is 25,000 miles. Most people wait until it snaps!

This is an easy job. There is a small spring-loaded idler pulley that maintains the proper tension on the belt. To remove the belt, you must first relieve tension on this pulley. Do this by inserting a � drive ratchet or breaker bar into the center of the idler pulley and apply enough pressure to slip the belt off. Before removing, pay close attention to how the belt snakes around all the pulleys. There should be a diagram in the engine compartment, near the hood latch. If not, sketch it before removing the belt. Reinstall the belt in accordance with the diagram. It is easier if you do the idler pulley last.
