Serpentine Belts

A serpentine belt is a single, continuous belt utilized in driving devices – such as power steering pump, alternator and others – in an automotive engine. First used by Mercedes-Benz, the belt is more efficient than the older multiple belt system.

How do you change the serpentine belt on a 1990 Ford E-150 XLT club with a 302?

What are the causes of a squeaky serpentine belt in vehicles?

dirt and dust usually could possibly be a dry worn belt but also check the belt tensioner it can be to weak and allow squeaking

Also, sometimes a belt with small cracks in it will make noise. If you haven't replaced the belt for a while I'd be suspicious of the cracks.

I've had this happen...check to make sure that water or anti-freeze did not hit the belt.

Either the belt is worn out or the tensioner is defective.

This also may be caused by your pulleys. For instance if the harmonic balancer gets out of line with the rest of your pulleys it can cause a squeak or if the bearing in one of your other pulleys has gone bad it can cause a squeak also.

How do you replace a serpentine belt on a 1993 Ford Escort wagon?

If you look down at the belt area, you will see a pully toward the front of the car that looks like it's attached to an arm. That is the tensioner pully. The tensioner is spring loaded. If you look at the arm of the tensioner there should be a square hole in it to insert a socket wrench or a breaker bar/pull handle to use as a lever to remove the tension from the belt. If there is no hle, then use a wrench(possibly 15mm) on the bolt head of the pully itself as your lever. As you hold the tensioner out of the way, unloop the old belt. Pay attention to the routing, so you can reinstall the new one correctly. Then, you route the new one in and again use your lever to move the tensioner so you can get the belt over the last pully. I usually put it over the alternator last. Use a light to make sure the belt is fully on all 5 grooves of every single pulley before you start the car.

Jeep Wrangler serpentine belt replacement?

There is a tensioner under the power steering pump. Lossen the pulley with a 15MM socket .. Do not remove it ... On top of the bracket to the left of the PS pump there is an adjustment screw again 15MM lossen it as well and the tensioner pulley will provide slack in the belt....once there is enough slack in the belt remove it make notes on how the belt is routed on the Alt,AC etc.... Replace with a new belt and tighten the adjustment screw until proper tension is on the belt then tighten the tensioner pulley below the PS pump. This is for a 98 Wrangler TJ...

How do you tighten a belt on a 1995 Chevy pickup?

The system should have an automatic belt tensioner. If the belt is loose the tensioner must be shot. The tensioner is available from your local auto parts store.

Cost of timing belt and water pump replacement cost on a 2003 Honda Accord LX?

i believe the 2003 has a timing chain and so does not require a change or replacement even in the owners manual its not listed for the 4 cylinder model only if your water pump is leaking then you would require to change the water pump. but for the 6 cylinder you do need to do the timing belt replacement at certain intervals.

How do you relieve tension on the serpentine belt of a 2001 Ford F150 4.3 V6 and is a special tool needed?

on the tensioner there is a square hole for a ratchet or use a wrench on the nut

The 2001 actually doesn't have the sqare hole. That's on the earlier trucks. Use a 15mm socket on a long breaker bar. There is a bolt head at the center of the tensioner pulley (just to the left of the middle of the engine if you're looking at it). Turn the handle toward the passenger side, and this will release the tension on the belt. Make sure you have a diagram to tell you how the belt is routed, so that you can put it back on in the right manner. Oh, and the F150's come with a 4.2L V6, not a 4.3L. Just FYI. Good luck!

If the serpentine belt broke on a 1996 Lincoln Continental how do you install a new one?

More importantly, why did it break? Before you install one, spin each pulley and feel for binding or no movement. Also check for serpentine belt tensioner being cocked or loose. Eye up the pullies to make sure something did not come out of alignment. IF you find something please post it. Oh yeah, there should be a diagram on a sticker somewhere in the engine compartment.

I won a 1996 Lincoln Continental and am replacing the belt and water pump, gotta love Ford, guess they didnt think that routing sticker for the belt was necessary. There isn't one anywhere under the hood.

Try looking up, I have a 96 Lincoln Continental and it is on the hood itself by the latch.

How do you replace the serpentine belt on a 2001 dodge ram b1500 v8 van and adjust the timing?

There is a guide on the front of the engine compartment that shows the direction the belt follows, either with or without A/C. Take a 15mm socket and a ratchet and place it on the farthest left pulley, which is the tensioner pulley. Pull it as if you are tightening the bolt. This pulley will rotate in relieving all of the tension allowing you to take off the old belt. Take the new belt and on the passenger side of the fan, lower the belt to the underdrive pulley (closest to the ground, and also the largest of them all). Then following the diagram weave the belt around all of the other pulleys until you are left with the tensioner pulley. Again use the socket and ratchet to move the pulley to the right and slip the last bit of the belt over the pulley. BEFORE you crank the engine, inspect the belt to ensure it is lined up on the grooved pulleys. Then crank 'er up! -Kojak

How do you adjust the tension on a serpentine belt for a 92 dodge spirit?

on the 92 3.0 sohc engines, the tensioner for the alt etc is a bolt behind the smallest pulley that has that's driven by it(meaning not an alternator, power steering pump etc...some people are newbs)youll need a 4-6 inch extension to reach it don't remember the socket, might have been a 12mm or 14mm but you losten the pulley itself a few turns first, not all the way off but enough to let the tension bolt travel...torque to desired or specified torque..i still don't know the torque settings for the alt belt as i did a steal with this engine and have heard mixed applications on stealth forums but the small belt is suppose to be quite tight and when its as tight as you think it should be,tighten it 2-4 times more, its suppose to be really tighter than youd expect, idid alot of digging for that one lol...but i have heard 141lbs ft for the other, but that's strictly heresay from unreliable sources....the other tensioner bolt is right above the other pulleys toward the ac compressor(lower pulleys)your gonna need to do alot more if your doing more than tension here, depending on car,y stealth needed a belt so i had to jack it up take the driver tire and well off and than take the pulley off etc..and install..P.I.T.A..but yeah if not youll know...that's all././.

How do you replace the serpentine belt on a 1997 park avenue that has the engine mount in the way?

To change the belt you will turn the stearing wheel all the way clock ways.Go to the passanger front wheel. You will see a 4 inch by about 6 inch plastic plate held on by plastic buttons.Remove them and take ofF the plastic plate. You will see a long bolt with a spacer about 5 inches.Remove the bolt and spacer. This will allow you to slide the belt up with out having to remove the engine mount bolt.It makes it a 20 minute job and can be done by a beginer.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is NOT a job for a beginner. Due to the fact the motor mount has to be removed the job will take at least a couple hours, and if you are not mechanically inclined I would take it to a shop. To remove the bolt you will need a reverse torx bit, and even then the job may not be a simple one.

I avoided removing the mount by cutting the spacer in half and then removing it so I could slip the belt in. Note that in order to do this you need to have the engine properly supported. To make up the difference in material I used a washer to make up the difference when I put it back.

Is it safe to drive a car without the serpentine belt?

For a long period of time? No, it is not. It will cause a lot of damage to your car. The serpentine belt not only controls the alternator (which without, your battery will be drained fairly fast), but it also controls the water pump (depending on the system in question). Without the water pump in action, you risk overheating your car and causing VERY expensive repairs.

For a short distance on the other hand (say to the mechanics shop a mile down the road), you shouldn't have too many problems. Just pay close attention to the temp gauge on the car and make sure you are not overheating.

Depending on the distance, you should have it towed if you're trying to get more than a few miles away. If you know enough about your car, you can always get a ride to the auto parts shop and grab a new belt. (Takes about 10 minutes to change and you only need a socket wrench to tighten/loosen the tensioner nut.)

Regardless, I do not suggest driving it without a belt for anywhere over than a few miles. Also be sure to drive safely as you will need additional time to turn without your power steering.

How much to replace serpentine belt on 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe?

How do you install serpentine belt for a 1997 ford crown vic lx 4.6l sefi v8?

The serpentine belt can be replaced by finding the belt tension pulley. This pulley has a bolt in the center and when you turn it the belt will loosen and you can take it off the pulleys. Look for a diagram sticker under the hood or make your own so you remember how the new belt wraps around the pulleys.
