Why Volvo 240 fuel pump noisy?
The main fuel pump can be noisy if it does not get enough fuel, mostly if the in-tank fuel pump is not working. For example if your gas tank is pretty full, you most likely do not hear any noise since the weight/pressure of a full gas tank is providing more pressure for the main fuel pump which is mounted underneath the car in a subframe. So if your main fuel pump is getting noisy with an almost empty gas tank it's most likely the in-tank fuel pump that is not working. Also check the corresponding relay (usually white) underneath the passenger glove compartment. Bottom line, If your fuel is pump noisy, but you are still driving, your main pump most likely is still good while the in-tank pump is not working.
Do scenic have a safe engine if the cam belt snaps?
i take it were talking Renault here if so definitely not bent at best bent valves or worse could of done the piston in if you buy a french car eg Peugeot 1.8 2.0 etc same on a Renault 1.8 2.0 etc if people say tapets are noisey don't touch with a barge pole as this is a common sign of a cam belt that has snapped and hasn't been repaired properly and the most expensive and common fault on scenics is the gearboxs £2000 by Renault

FUEL PUMP RELAY. IF YOU SHORT THE FUSEBOX TERMINALS FOR PRE PUMP AND MAIN PUMP YOU WILL BE BYPASSING THE RELAY. IF IT THEN STARTS IT SHOULD BE THE RELAY THAT IS FAULTY. OF COURSE RETRY STARTING WITH THE SHORT REMOVED TO CONFIRM PROBLEM. DONT LEAVE SHORT ON PERMANENTLY, ONLY TEMPORARILY..
Is it a fuse issue if the headlights on your Volvo 240 GL aren't turning on but the brights work?
No you have a bad dimmer swith or the relay is stuck!
I worked for an Independent Volvo, and I got to see just this problem, sometimes the car would go, and sometimes it would stall. I admit, there could be many possible problems, but what we found most of the time was the Cat Converter. I know that many are cursing right now, but understand the answer first. Eventually over time, the catyilizer can break up into pieces if this occurs, the catalytic converter can shift and sculpt into a shape that will obstruct the flow of the exhaust system. If the shape is a ball, which usually forms, it will roll back and forth in its case while you are driving, and once it blocks the outlet, the engine will stall. It is likely that you could have some other problem, but sometimes you just have to check every possibility.
I have seen this type of problem too, and the cat is a possibility, but I would lean more towards a bad fuel pump or mass airflow meter.
What is the difference between a Volvo 240 DL and a Volvo 240 GL?
The DL and GL are just the trim and equipment level. The GL being the more upscale. You will notice some 240's have a clock while others have a tachometer and still others have a tachometer in the main instrument cluster and a small clock and sometimes even an oil pressure guage in the little side area to the right of the instrument panel. Some 240's have heated seats. Also not all 240's have electric windows. Many are just good ole roll up. Not sure which is more spiffy but these little differences are the what it is all about.
Open the hood and you'll find it in the back, right behind the steering wheel. You'll have to remove the protective covering. Also, you can get at the other end of the fuse assembly by removing the part of the interior dash above the driver's legs.

Why do you have blue smoke in exhaust upon initial start up with your 1988 Volvo 240 dl?
It is seeping oil into the cylinders when it's not running. It could be old valve guide seals. These will allow this type of problem to occur.

Where is the 240 DL Volvo gear shift relay?
Well, you don't mention a year or whether your transmission is a manual M46 or an automatic AW70 or 71. Regardless, the relay is best accessed by removing the 7 screws that retain your glovebox. Remove the entire glove box as a unit and it should be directly to your left inside the area vacated by the glovebox. Rectangular in shape, it will be white for a later model automatic, orange for an earlier auto or blue for the M46 manual
How do you replace fuses on a 1991 240 Volvo?
The fuse box is located inside the car on the driver's side, below the dashboard, just inside the door. If this isn't clear, think of where you reach for the hood release. The fusebox is in that area, but closer to the door. It is a vertical, narrow rectangular panel with a latch or release at the bottom. Just turn the release to the right and the panel can be easily removed. The inside of the panel has a list that identifies each fuse.

How do you tighten the power steering belt on 93 Volvo 240?
I just did this on my 1993 Volvo 240 wagon. The belt runs from the AC compressor to the power steering pump and there is a mounting bracket on the left side with a bolt that can slide up and down to get the correct tension.
Now, in my case, even if I had the bolt all the way at the top of the bracket, the belt was still not tight enough. For a more macro adjustment, the bracket can be moved between two bushing holes. I moved my bracket from the bottom hole to the top hole (bushing came out easily with some wiggling) and that gave me plenty of room to adjust the bolt in the bracket to the right tension.
